@byHayze As much as you can. Whatever value you put is how much ram will be allocated per core on your processor. Seeing as how you have 16GB of RAM. You have A LOT of RAM to allocate. So go ahead and set it as high as you want, just make sure that you don'e set it too high to where you can't allocate every core anymore. If you have 4, then you should be able to max out I think. Anything above 4 cores, I'm not 100% about. Hope this helped!
@randomraretutorials heres the thing. at 3GB i can only use 3 cores, but at 2 gb i can use all four. what aetting should i use? and heres one more question, what could i change if i wanted my render to use like 70% of my ram (for example) by because mine only uses 7% of it which makes me render pretty slow
@byHayze I would recommend allowing it to use all of your cores, so 2GB. And After Effects will take the amount of RAM it needs in order to function. The bigger your project, the more RAM it will consume. 7% is REALLY low, not sure what is going on there. If the program functions fine, then I'm not sure what could be the issue for the 7% RAM problem.
@wattsits07 Well, either your processor is only one core. Or you don't have enough RAM for multiprocessing because each core needs a certain amount of RAM to utilize for rendering. And that only includes that RAM that after effects is allowed to use. In my video, even though I have 4 GB of RAM I can only use 2 cores because after effect can only use 2.5 out of the 4 that I have and because it utilizes .75gb of ram per core, that's all I can use.
do you know why i get a blue screen each time i render something longer than 4 minutes? i get blue screen and i have to restart the computer, it's a pain in the ass. Only happens when the video is longer than 4 minutes.
@tlast2O12dude Hmm, what version of After Effects are you using? What are your PC specs? After Effects is a VERY RAM intensive program, and if you have very little RAM then sometimes you can have problems. So possibly, after 4 minutes of rendering your RAM is simply taken up too much. Have you tried using Adobe Media Encoder to convert your video instead of using After Effects? Maybe that will work better.
@randomraretutorials well aparently it had something to do with the ram. I did this tutorial and it went from using 1GB of ram to 100k of ram for some reason. o.0
@tlast2O12dude Hmm, so after you applied the multiprocessing settings is when you started having this problem? Maybe multiprocessing just takes up too much ram and then the rendering process kinda crashes resulting in it being only 100K. I would suggest to maybe try rendering using OpenGL, maybe your graphics card can take the load off of your CPU and RAM. Try turning off multiprocessing to see if it helps, it may be slower but at least your program works again.
@BearTubz Make sure that you checkmark multiprocessing, and then turn down how much RAM is allocated per core to the least number, turn down how much ram to use for other applications to the lowest as well, and how much RAM does after effects say it has available to it?
@randomraretutorials Ok, so I put it back down to 0.75GB usage and the actual CPU goes up to two out of the for that I have in my computer, as soon as I take it any higher than 0.75GB it goes straight down to zero, not only is it not using the full 4 CPU's, as soon as I alocate it more than 2GB or ram usage, which should be ok, even if I where to use only two CPU's when i tried to render a 4min vid with 2GB ram at actual cpu as 0 it was over 4 hours expected ¬_¬
@BearTubz After effects can't utilize ALL of your RAM, so it can only use a certain amount so 2 GB is NOT good enough. And these are just tweaks to help it go faster, if it says actual CPU's used 0 then lower the amount of RAM it allocates and make it say the highest number. It's not a tweak that will BLAZINGLY increase the speed, but it's supposed to help. The best solution to making After effects faster is obviously getting better hardware, but this is also supposed to help as well.
@randomraretutorials Also, something has changed, because I remembering rendering a clip with the similar frame count of 16,000 in under an hour a couple of months ago :S

Pressing Caps lock before a render is initiated will help by disabling the preview. Toggle caps lock off to enable the preview again.

I have a intel core 2 quad @ 4gigs of ram, yet when i go onto multiprocessing it says
Actual CPUs that will be used: 0
WHY?
