He speaks of his guilt and horror over having caused so much death, to have spilt so much Roman blood, but HE was the one who put them there 'because I said so', HE was the one to leave them. He and only he can be blamed. Yet he's still punishing Cleopatra.
luv that line ...Time! Time! for what?!...the great Marc Antony swords flashing in both hands! PUFF AGRIIPPA! PUFF OCTAVIAN!.....and..."Why r u not dead? Why do u not lie in the deepest part of the ocean bloodless and bloated?
Historically, as octavian's forces marched on Alexandria, Antony and Cleopatra re-named their dining society from the "Livers of Life' to "The Partners in Death" as they were welcoming the arrival of death, knowing the end was coming.
Actually it was pre-agreed between them that they would try to escape the battle, cause all the richest of Egypt was on board their ships, they had to get it out of harms way. That's why Antony and Cleopatra retreated from Actium.
@RubberbandGirl16 Well he was mentally devastated after what he went through, war with his own country and having to leave his legion to die in the water
she slapped him first and she was trying to get him to be like ceaser. obviously he is not ceaser...basically she used them both!
nobody in the film told her that antony was dead. she assumed it. western civilization might have been different today if she had stayed. it is amazing how beautiful this movie is. every shot is a magnificient portrait
The principate was the beggining of Rome's slow decay. The rule of law lay in ruins. The reason we have western democracy is because our system of government always insisted the monarch was NOT ABSOLUTE. Even a tyrant like Henry VIII had restrictionshe could never arbitarily killparliamentarians. But under the principate senators could be put to death at the simple command of the Emperor. There was no powerful aristocracy that could arm and fight a bad princeps. Absolute power corrupts absolutly
Becareful the rulers you serve..... live not for this world where men are weak and material things are destroyed, open your heart to Christ and live on earth to store your treasures in the kindom of heaven above after this life has pasted.
Cleopatra was neither young nor good-looking. Just examine her coins. Octavianus was a pr*ck without passion (except for power) - and those are the ones who always win.
Anthony!!! god i wanna kill u!!! wake up and smell the roses everything is not her falt... well kinda but still... try blaming someone else wontcha!!!! shut up!!! ur so mean!!!
Antony didn't blame Cleopatra; he knew that by running from battle to be with her, he let down his own men. His men who were still alive now hated Antony. But Antony felt worst about the men who couldn't run away as he did - the men who had stayed and fought, and who had died. Now they were in the Underworld, looking at Antony with contempt. It was their contempt for him that was slowly eating at him. He had total contempt for himself. And one who has contempt for self can no longer truly love.
Without a vision people perish. Anthony had no vision to match the scale of vision of Cleopatra. He only had vision for Cleopatra, and so they both perished.
Big difference with Ceasar - Ceasar had a big dream, vision, and wisdom to come along with it. He indeed handled both Rome affairs and Cleopatra well for all.
@vorotnikova Very well said; and Octavian had a vision too. Minor if you want, if compared with Caesar's but more realistic; that's why he was able to materialize it.
The scene at the end of this clip with Cleopatra encouraging Antony to fight for their lives is one of the best scenes in the entire movie. Acting and quotes at their finest.

I agree, these last scene's are Burton at his best: brooding, angry, heartbroken and then his spirit renewed, he rides into death with eye's open
A great and underrated performance-
