GIMP is still lacking in a lot of area's. There's no CMYK colour support for one, which is a HUGE deal if you work with print media. Apart from that major omission there it's a reasonable competetor, but because of it it'll still be difficult to consider it as a professional tool. Maybe in future versions. There's also the fact that Photoshop integrates seamlessly with the other Adobe apps which gives it a hell of a lot more power than just PS on its own.

Personally, I prefer Krita anyway. It's not cross-platform, but that's not an issue for me anyway...

The is no non-destructive editing / adjustment layers yet. You can still get the same things done, but not as elegantly. I have used GIMP long enough to get used to its UI, and it works fine, but it's just missing some very fundamental tools.
