WOW!! Just .... WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!! So easy, just vocals, a guitar and an ever repeating chords sequence ... Mix it well up and you get this SUPERB performance of a GREAT song. Hats off to Mr. Dunnery, simply timeless! ... I still have goose bumps.
he came to my house waay back when in the 80's when i was a lil lad (prob freaked him out as every1 stood and stared) he came to see a fan in hospital and my dad took him back to a gig he had to do :)
i must admit to being a you tube surfer usually cutting clips short but not this, this kinda mesmerises and such a contrast to the lamb version which is pretty heavy..bravo francis
Check out the album version of this song. Awesome (his cover of Love will tear us apart has to be heard too) He has to be the most underated singer song writer and guitarist around.
Sitting in a hotel in White Plains, getting ready to go to the City for the first time in 25 years, I clicked on this. I thought it would be appropriate and nostalgic to hear one of my favorites from The Lamb Lies Down. I'd never heard of Mr. Dunnery but I instantly became a fan. What a FANTASTIC cover! It has become a very welcome earworm.
I'm ashamed to say thatI have never seen or even heard of Francis Dunnery before this video.I have watched this about ten times on and off and I am consistently blown away by this cover & performance.5 stars.Brilliant!! That is not an easy song to sing yet to play like that AND sing, well, WOW!Thx alot for the post,M.
Just saw Francis yesterday at the house party in Aalborg, It was the best performance and concert I have seen for very long, love his music even when he play Genesís....
one of genesis's best ever shit !!to try to pull this off with single acoustic is a great effort ......but what happened to the other parts "as i cuddled .... no time for et
Superb ! He knows how to make this Heavy Lamb Song into a very sensitive song. Great voice, well played chords ( with that stunning E snare repeating.. ).
Somebody please tell me there's a clip of him playing 'Musical Box' somewhere on the web - one of the musical highlights of my life was the inclusion of it on his tour recently (his own material was excellent BTW)

The whole guitar is downtuned a bit then the top string is dropped , like doing drop D. Tune the top string to match the vid and then tune as you would in Drop D. From there hes picking out a D chord, then D with your 3rd finger lifted to open then its 1st finger 1st fret 2nd string from bottom+3rd finger 3rd fret bottom string, last is just 2nd finger 2nd fret bottom string. Just pick around you'll figure out the repeating patt. Hit the top string every time your switch shapes for the low note
interesting to make this into a folk song and he does a really wonderful job singing and connecting with the lyrics. makes the song a bit tame though and I miss Phil's drumming :)
Channeling Kevin Gilbert's cover of this song, hmm? Actually, it's a nice way to follow-through on that version. It's excellent! Good choices to make the whole thing acoustic, adding the chorus (and leaving out the porcupine part), and singing with a little angst from the original. Thanks for performing this! Is there a studio version?

@ the watchers of his strings & chords. Lots of D chords but.... The E string is the base string he touches to support the chords...
Just watch & learn.. But most important. It's not a discussion worth.. It's the feeling.. It's the music, it's such a wonderfull song...

One of my favourite tracks from the 'Lamb' album and this cover gives it all the justice it deserves. A great acoustic version.
It is possible to play it in open 'E' however.

Louder than usual, but more sedate than preferred.
This should be an angst ridden, acid-pumped, soul scarring, electrically charged rock song. I don't know what this is, though...
Kind regards,

Kevin Gilbert's cover brings out the rage.
Jeff Buckley's cover brings out the kink.
Francis's cover brings out the fear.
"Back in NYC" is truly timeless, like "Finnegan's Wake". People will probably still be covering it 200 years from now.
