beautiful song...very melancholy.I just lost my husband... a very gentle man, who fits into this song very well. Of course, who could sing it better than Peggy Lee.
Thank you very much for posting this. After 36 years on our hill here in Chadds Ford, PA, we are empty nesters, with grandchildren. We await another winter and sledding down the hill with the 5 year old. Smiles to all.
Thanks for posting this nostalgic clip. My parents married the year this song was wriiten, 1937, it was always one of their favourite melodies. My father died in 1983 and mum in 2004 - two lovely people much missed. Now I am just retired, child flown the nest abroad, and we are looking for "a place on the hill". The lyrics of this song show such a wonderful insight for the wheel of time and the effect it has on us all.
I saw Peggy perform at an outdoor venue in Concord CA, and she sang this, and it was as sweet and touching then as in this clip. Mel Tormé wheeled her out and she did her show from her wheelchair. She told the audience she had been in a vehicular accident earlier, and we didn't know it- or at least I didn't know it- but this was a lie she told us. In fact, she was already wheelchair-bound in 1993, but she didn't want us to worry. It was a great performance and we didn't want to let her go.
Rory Emerald? RORY EMERALD? Is that a joke? I don't believe Rory Emerald existed! Of course, it was Jerome Kern, one of the great composers of the American Songbook.........
The song was written by Oscar Hammerstein (w) and Jerome Kern (m) back in 1937. It was first heard in the movie musical "High, Wide, and Handsome" when Irene Dunne sang it. The first hit records of the tune were by Bing Crosby (Decca) and Ozzie Nelson, vocals by Harriet Hilliard (Bluebird)
After my wife & children numbering 2..now grown ..Sandy & I moved out of Illinois..flat lands. We settled our retirement years 1,500 feet up in the hills of Somerset kentucky. We are always having our feelings get in the way of our emotions in the later years of our life together..45) We both remembered this wonderful & warm song and placed it on our i POD. Each time we drive up our winding senic hill we have tears . We trully lived this life on Peggy's hill in her vivid song Cliff steele
@4css God bless you for fulfilling the dream of so many; and I really mean that. My ex-wife and I didn't work out (hence the "ex") but we're the best fo friends and, as I always say to her, all I wanted us to be was "the folks who live on the hill". Peace and love.
Not quite weird, just a bit of "artistic poetic license"... Not to be criticized, however, when you compare it to Frank Sinatra, who blatantly sang incorrect lyrics very frequently... I think he was trying to be "stylistic", however, there is a limit..!!! Peggy Lee can sing whatever she wishes. Period.
This is just the most subtle, affecting song in the whole world. It's my favourite song after "Wichita Lineman". Peggy Lee was superlative in everything she did.
@maida1982a I just saw "Of Time and the City" last night with a friend - now a US citizen - who was born and raised in Wirral. The two of us were in tears at the end of this song: it sums up so much of the dreams and aspirations of the generation that came of age after WWII on both sides of the Atlantic, i.e. our parents: "Darby and Joan, who used to be known as Jack and Jill...and who will always be known as the folks who live on the hill." Magic, sheer magic.
No-one can quite do this song like Peggy Lee....It was as though this song was specially written for her....I know it wasn't but her version has to be the best in the whole universe and milky way !!!!
this is so beautiful---no one can sing this like this...they wish!!LOL
i always fill up whenever i hear it because it reminds me of my Mum and Dad --now in their 70's.
they have lived in the same house all their married life ,love each other like that very first day they met, deeper in fact, and they live in a house a hill.
I taught myself to play this on the piano, and it is just so special to them and me.Love them.....;-))

A terrific Nelson Riddle arrangement. This was conducted by Frank Sinatra for the album.

@56Packman Thank you for that. I had no idea Frank Sinatra conducted anything.

I wonder why she sings, "Baby and Joan" instead of "Darby and Joan?"
no matter, a great performance from a great lady

It's weird, I wonder that too - if you listen to the other version on youtube she says exactly the same thing
