  • We shave(d) him because unlike our Siberian he never blew out his fur. What we didn't know was he had a condition called fur funk. This is when they don't blow out the fur and it will begin to grow back less and less because they only have so much hair follicles. We have to keep him shaved lower now or else he looks like he's abused. Sucks, but he looks good shaved and is very comfortable. We know for our next malamute.

  • We have two malamutes they LOVE to swim , we live a block from the Hudson River and they are always jumping in for a swim in a little inlet.

  • She was absolutely beautiful. Thank you for sharing :)

  • they actually remind me more of a shiba inu for some reason idk why think the curled tail though...lol

    thumbs up :D

  • Oh! Don't shave malamutes! It's really bad for them! We lived in San Antonio a bit (Wisconsin now) , and we worked hard to keep our Malamute cool. She laid on the cement in the garage a lot and we would take her swimming at Canyon Lake or wet her down with a kiddie pool in back and ALWAYS have fans running. Watch for fungi under the fur though! You can't see it right away, but it's like a sore and forms on hot spots. It has to be treated ASAP!

  • what's the different between a husky and a malamute?

    i don't understand that oô

  • I wish my husky would go in water

  • To addicusbrown; A Husky or Malamute should "never" be shaved to keep them cool. The insulation properties of the fur help insulate them from the heat as well as the cold. As an owner of Malamutes for the past 25+ years in Sacramento Ca. I know how hot weather can affect these guys (105+ degrees on some summer days). I always kept them in the house and "they" fount the coolest spots. I would wet them down and put a fan on them. (when you keep wetting them you have to be careful of skin fungis!).

  • @greywolf1755 i take mine to the groomers not to shave but get it alittle shorter in the summer alabama heat is bad on them with heat and humidity

  • @greywolf1755

Is it really wise to take advice from somebody who can't spell "fungus?"

  • @mrsredneckgurl About as wise as someone who can't spell "girl", (at least mine was a typo, what's your excuse?).

  • @greywolf1755 I LIVE IN NSACRAMENTO TOO!! I have a malamute puppy, and since it doesnt like heat , what should I do in the summer. Cause the heat is considerably bad some days. For a pup should I just wet and fan him?

  • @mook2u As you know Sacramento summers can be brutal. I always kept my Malamutes in the cool house during the hottest time of the day and it was their instinct to find the coolest spot. If they had to be left outside I just made sure they had plenty of shade and cool water to drink. I also found "drip mister systems" to be helpfull. Never exercise they in the hottest part of the day and learn to recognise the signs of heat stress. Good luck with your puppy, they are a great breed of dog.

  • do most malamutes swim?

  • My loved pulling a canoe through up a river when he was younger. He'd flip out every time it took out the sled harness.

  • She has died on 25.05.2009 :-(((

  • how old?

  • 11

    .

  • Sorry to hear. She was beautiful!

  • :( . She looked to be a pretty god. I'm so sorry to hear that.

  • i'm so sorry. i lost my g.s.d. in april and it's hard to get by without him

  • Aw, that's too bad.

  • @inzkulozik how did you bury such a big dog

  • my akita/malamute is a good swimmer

  • very beautiful

  • I love this breed. But I never had chance to see an Malamute live.

  • No sound...?

  • Yes.

  • My bitch loves water. havnt tried taking her for a swim though. my male on the other hand when we tried to take him for a swime wouldnt stop crying!

  • me 2 my malamute hates water

  • My malamute hate the water=/ got any tricks to get em swimming?

  • yeh...throw them in.

  • lol. agreed

  • Jump in with them, mine didnt like the water but now they love it. They see you in the water and as pack leader in the water they think it must be alright.

  • Yeah, swim just off shore, make sure your dog has your attention, then duck dive under the water. if your dog loves ya, he'll save ya.

  • throw a stick for them lol... my dog hates baths but she LOVES swimming in streams, lakes and ponds hehe

  • if he hate water Try to swim whit him.

They Have heavy pelt so making them swim Is a drag if u don't live in hot envierment. and if u live in a hot envierment u shuld be charged for animale cruelty.

  • I have a Malamute and a Siberian Husky and live in a very hot area. We keep them shaved down to stay cool and they spend most of their time in the house. I try to get them in the pool, but neither one likes the water. They will let me hose them down though.

  • @addicusbrown Shave?

That's a terrible idea for these dogs, it can lead to serious skin problems. I, too have both a Mal and a Sibe.

    DO NOT SHAVE THEM!!

  • haha! i i took my pup for a walk out in the woods and she took off after a rabbit. I couldnt find her and she wouldnt come when i called. Just when i was starting to get worried i heard a little boy's voice screaming "Mommy! Look, its a wolf!!!" I ran towards the yells and sure enough, there she was. She was staring at the kid like he was a bear but the mom was pissing herself laughing cause she saw the collar.

  • How funny! Had similar experiences with ours. In the Olympic National Park in WA, our big male took off after a deer as we tried to get him in the truck, running right past the park ranger. A major no-no! Took us an hour to find him too. Great memories now. Mals rule.

  • I wanted a malamute or a husky but I can't keep them where I live. It would be too hard for the dogs in the summer. It gets so humid around were I live and it's already hot in the first place.

  • huskies and malamutes actually live longer in warm weather... the incidence of hip dysplasia goes down (though it's already low). the important thing is not to exercise them by the 120 rule... if the temperature + humidity is greater than 120, do NOT let your husky/malamute out. i live in south carolina and have a 2yo husky, and now that summer is coming we exercise at night.

  • whoops, i meant DO exercise them by the 120 rule

  • do you cut the hair?

  • great dog

  • im in the procees of buying one of these powerhouses

  • Once I saw an Alaskan Malamute swimming and this stranger walks by, and he was like " OH MYYY GOODNESS, A WOLF!!!! " And the owners were like " Idiot " ahaa

  • Hah, yeah, recently my friend adopted a malamute and when he showed his mother she screamed at the top of her lungs because she thought it was a wolf in the house. LOL it scared the bejesus out of them both! These dogs are adorable though.

  • I loveeee these dogs!!! Their soooooooo lovable x]

  • hey is that a male or female, and how old is it?

    thanks

  • Hi,

    - female, born 1998

  • Awesome! I have an Alaskan Malamute too, did you ever have any problems with your dog barking/biting at strangers? Just wondering, thanks

  • Hi,

I haven't got any problems with bitting, but sometimes she barks at the strangers, especially drunk ones ;)

  • Mines 7 month and is about that size.

  • Mine doesn't know how to bark lol. She's barked a small little bark once...at a cat. And never again.
