  • @shrekster2005 It's hard to produce a 350 that makes 450 horsepower, that kind of power is usually reserved for 383 or 400. Im not saying people don't do it, but it cost's alot. With a good set of heads and a hydraulic roller block yeah 450 can be acheived with some money. If not shoot a 150 shot down it's throat.

  • the only reason people look away from the 305 is the fact the 350 is just as common so most people decide to do with the 5.7 vs. 5.0.. I can get top running 305's here in upst. ny for 150 but I can score a 350 for about 300... For the extra 150 you get an engine you can find many more aftermarket parts for than a 305. I do stand by my 305's tho.. I got one with 400 hp on n/a pump gas... good engines

  • @slickss85 If u borred a 305 to 350 you would be in the wter jackets . You could stroke it to 345ci (i think). but id just much rather have the 350 .30 over that i have in my basement.

  • i have a hard time believing that is a 305, but anything is possible. probably the best sounding most responsive 305 ever. considering you can't really put good heads on a 305 because of the tiny bore. stroke is the same as 350 though

  • @slickss85 Thats why you bore it out.. a 305 and a 350 are the same engine just with different internals and bore. Most of the parts are interchangable.

    Gas mileage? You could build a 302/305 up to 550hp and still get 23 on the freeway.

  • I'm with ya 50chev... kinda my point.. gas milage isn't a concern cuz this thing obviously wasnt built for freeway driving, it was built to get down the track. and it came with neither a 305 or a 350.

    here's your choice a 305 block or a 350 block... your gonna take the 350 cuz the parts are just as readily available and inexpensive and you are going to get more power from it. nothing wrong with a 305, my 86 had one and it ran like hell.. but it didn't run with any 350

  • Not with this truck no.

    Hot rod magazine built a 305 for a streetable 550 horsepower. I like 350's, and 454's.

    But I'm not a "Cookie-cutter me too" kind of guy.

    We use 4.11 rear ends, and a 6 speed transmission. my 305 is getting pretty hopped up. And 90% of people wont have the gear setup I do.

    So 9 times out of ten...350's wont keep up.

  • well crate 350 engines are costly when i could take the 305 block and bore it out to 350 specs and then thy would be the same exact thing. I dont know about you but i dont want to spend thousands of dollars on a engine when i have a engine i could bore to another specification.

  • sorry bud but he's right, it's the predecessor to ford's c6 transmission... it's what ford's cruise-o-matic turned into... basically ford's response to the chevy thm350.. the c6 tranny was fords turbo 400... all are three speeds, c6 and turbo 400 can just handle more horsepower

  • i have a 91 caprice classic with a 305 HO all stock. on a good day it will fly like the wind. especialy for how heavy the car is.

  • Those caprices are really nice rides. I have an 81 elcamino 305/200-r4 with all gm parts, it revs like hell and gets 22+ mpg w clutch fan. It has a built Q-jet 4 barrel with stock exhaust manafolds and y-pipe. Has a 2.5 sinlge pipe w cat and muffler. The thing really moves, great performer and very durable motor. The only thin it needs is a tach w more digits.

  • build it, if your cylinders dont show wear just get it honed or dont its ur preference, steel crank, forged pistons and rods, maybey hyperetectic with dome for more compression, small chamber but flowed heads, if you can afford it a solid roller cam and lifters with a 570- 576 lift, edelbrock victor jr intake, holley 750 or more cfm carb with aluminum roller rockers and tall anodized aluminum valve covers got me 558 horse power at the flywheel with my experimental 305

  • @kirkman05 this was a car I built when I was 15,my friend sold me the body for $60.My other friend Sold me a 355 for 2 grand even thought it costed $7500 to build .pushing 497-501 hp and this is true dyno numbers.I did mean 12.65.That 12.6 was its best time usually it was pulling 13 flat at 119mph
