In colonial mexico the aztecs used to wrap peices of horse dung in leaves and dry them out to smoke, or even eat. Aztecs never had horses so at first they thought the horse dung was sacred and from the gods. The Spanish conquistators called these little peices of horse dung "chicanos" and that is where the name came from. I learned this from a Spanish history professor who studied archealogy in Mexico city.
