Myself, and coleauge in work use 2 identical computers (Core 2 Duo, 4gb Ram, same same Nvidia gfx card.) and mines considerably more snappy.

Not even. Apple has the most overpriced hardware on the planet. Take a look at their macbook. For $1100, you get 1 gig of crappy ddr 2 ram, a tiny slow hard drive, an outdated integrated graphics card, and a slow processor. You can upgrade, but these upgrades are ridiculously overpriced. Double the hard drive space (while still leaving it with a crappy speed) costs an additional $150. An additional gig of the crappy ddr2 ram costs $100!!

Why not go to lenovo and order a decent thinkpad?

I just customized a Thinkpad R400 for $1079. It includes a 2.4 ghz low wattage processor with a front side bus clocking in at 1066mhz (as opposed to the macbook's 800 mhz). It has 3 gigs of DDR3 ram, an integrated graphics card with double the memory of the macbook's, and of course a 160 gb hard drive that clocks at 7200 rpm (vs macbook's 5400).

This is retail, not custom made. Seriously, macs are ridiculously overpriced.

Firewire is outdated and slower than USB 2.0 (honestly, who uses firewire nowadays?) The model I spec'd does indeed come with a camera. Operating system is mostly a matter of personal preference, but I wouldn't say your OS is superior (don't even bring up the virus issue, just download avg for free on a pc and you're set). My display is capable of 1440x900 res, compared to the 1280 x 800 of a macbook. As for software, all you really get is iLife. Amateur freeware level software.
