I loved Michiba, but Sakai was always my favorite. Big smile, great sense of humor, so humble and his meals always looked as good as I'm sure they tasted.
"Im not sure how i can keep my position as a head chef into my 70s" Well Sakai Sensei, its now ten years later and you are 69 years old. You directly own four restaurants and are the undisputed master of French Japanese hybridizations, and a person whose knife skills I've never seen surpassed. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for one of the best meals I've ever personally eaten, and years of culinary education and entertainment.
I saw Sakai at Opus One winery in Napa - opus is the Robert Mondavi/Baron Rothschild winery to make Bordeaux style wines in CA. Recall, the bordeaux appellation only refers to wines from the bordeaux region. These are meritages in the states...he bought two bottles of wine..a 2007 and a 2005 cab...still too young to drink now..wait 10 years...total cost: about 500 dollars with tax. He was wearing the same tan suit...he was in NAPA for a CIA japan-US cooking event.
Five years ago, a man's fantasy became a reality in a form never seen before: Kitchen Stadium, a giant cooking arena. The motivation for spending his fortune to create Kitchen Stadium was to encounter new original cuisines which could be called true artistic creations.
@JokaPlaya mainly because the Cooking Channel does not have permission to use the Backdraft theme. However, the new music is so awful because we are use to watching this show with the backdraft soundtracks. It get us going from start to finish.
Actually, "Krape" is just right, being the "Englishified" version of a French word. You can't sit there and give the word back its original pronunciation when using it in another language (especially if the word is INTEGRATED in that other language). On TOP of that, "Krape" is the CLOSEST pronunciation to its original counterpart, and if you were to order a "Krape" in France, everyone would understand you (and look at you with burning disdain because you're an "etranger," an outsider).
Heh, the theatrics of this whole thing is so blatant. "I came here alone. Well, me and the camera crew here."
Also, I love how he just 'happened' to run into the guy to whom Makio gave that letter. That doesn't really seem like the most effective way to deliver letters. "Oh, hi. Here's a letter for a former classmate who lives in an entirely different city. If you run into him, could you give it to him? Thanks!"
exactly, I can't even watch the American version, I find it very boring. The only reason this worked was the dubbing and the quirkiness of the whole show
The camera crew was there because Sakai was visiting his hometown. Everything that happened came out from that. I'm sure if you became famous and visited your hometown, old friends would show up to see you too..
Sakai is SO CUTE. I loved Michiba, too, though. Those two are my absolute favorite^^

I am NOT being obnoxious, but the word "Crêpe" is NOT pronounced like "Krape" as in the fruit "Grape".
It's just pronounced like "Krrrap", focusing on the tongue vibrating "R" sound. Just say "Ku-lap" very fast.
