@berwynk Being left handed myself, I was open to the possibility that perhaps being left-handed is a psychological disorder, but it does not have a great enough impact on my life. If I suddenly lost my left hand in an accident, I could function completely fine without it. Humans are very resilient.
@berwynk I have not heard or seen evidence to suggest emotional or psychological distress to retraining to be right-handed although I imagine there is a steep learning curve because it is something you were taught at an early age and so relearning it after your set in your ways would be a challenge. Hence the phrase you can't teach an old dog new tricks.
@berwynk I don't think we can equate being gay to being left handed. Writing or throwing a ball are man-made devices. I've heard many stories from elders who say they were forced into learning to write with their right hand at an early age because it was "correct" and there is no negative impact on the individual. They just simply learned to adapt.

If it is voluntary then it is simply a choice like being vegan or vegetarian.
If it is considered involuntary, would it not classify as a simple psychological disorder? Notably the definition of a p.d. rules out symptoms that occur due to particular events.

@berwynk I'm still learning but the way I understand a psychological disorder is it's a persistent behavioral pattern that can affect multiple areas of your life. I think writing with your left hand or loving orange shirts doesn't qualify because you can choose not to do it and could live just fine without. But if you couldn't function without orange shirts or it started affecting your day to day decisions then I'd say it would fall into a psych disorder. I'm trying not to be offensive. Sorry.

I would argue that for a disposition, behaviour or characteristic to qualify as a disorder, psychological or otherwise, it should negatively impact on the individual rather than merely affecting them in a way which, subject to their external environment, is broadly neutral to their well being. The example for left handed predisposition is specifically chosen because these individuals to not exercise choice and cannot change voluntarily.
@berwynk ...more over, there have been attempts throughout history to re-educate left-handed individuals overwhelmingly with negative impacts on them educationally, emotionally and psychologically. The simple fact is that the pre-disposition to left-handedness is no more an innate disorder that different sexuality. This is at least in part to do with the fact that surveys of 'homosexuals' and 'bisexuals' tended to concentrate on those presenting themselves to medical practitioners as being unwell. People probably do not have the choice to be gay - recent studies indicate a "gay gene." Aside from that, there is no logical morals/values that are against someone being gay. It's almost like saying that I think you're immoral because you were born with a certain shaped nose. (This is, of course, leaving religion out of the "Logical moral values" as I'm defining "Logical" as being supported by considerable evidence / studies.)

I've heard many stories from elders who say they were forced into learning to write with their right hand at an early age because it was "correct" and there is no negative impact on the individual. Have you ever noticed that when "closet" gays "Bash" gays it usually makes the basher, and those associated, (usually by conflation), with them, look rotten. P. I think you should look over it and write it down so you can revideo it to make it flow better so that more people will watch it all the way though. Natural :
- Homosexuality's been observed in several cultures, forever and even among several animal species.
- War is in human's nature. We can't help ourselves but fight all the time.
Not Natural :
- Humans flying. I see no one rising against planes?

I really wish I could find the scientific study that was done showing that Gay men actually have something different in their brain. I read it once a few years back in a science journal and haven't been able to find it on the internet.We live in a "free" country and yet people want to chose who can be free.And the Bible standpoint doesn't fly with me.....why can you have multiple wives (Abraham, Jacob, David, Solomon) but a gay woman can't have one?

Not just gays, there are other life styles out there I don't think are right. Do I treat people unfairly? No I don't. Well let me tell you, I'd rather not talk about the subject of two guys going at it, but it's all over the place. Young relatives in my family had to learn, way to early in my opinion, about two guys going off together, and two women going off together. That has an affect. Nothing to do with fear, just a fact. You do have an affect on us by your constant bitching and moaning.

You can be against reckless promiscuity if that's the part of the often publicized side of how SOME gay people choose to act w/o being against their orientation. If you're truly against their orientation then there is no word for it besides homophobia. Someone's orientation has no effect on your life unless you fear it. That's something the raging homophobe in the comments above ^ who I had to block and delete comments from, doesn't get.

I don't think there should be homosexual marriage. They should be able to have an equivalent, but it shouldn't be called marriage as marriage is more of a religious thing, and the bible does say a man should not lie with another man. By the way, I'm fine with gay people. i have several gay friends, one of which is actually catholic and he doesn't believe gay people should be allowed to marry. That NCBI study is very interesting, just goes to show that many homophobes may be gay themselves.

Interesting video. Would you consider being gay as voluntary or involuntary?
If it is voluntary then it is simply a choice like being vegan or vegetarian.
If it is considered involuntary, would it not classify as a simple psychological disorder? Notably the definition of a p.d. rules out symptoms that occur due to particular events.
Perhaps people get too hung up on the morality of it all and don't consider that maybe it is just a natural irregularity which is why it is seen in many animals.

@berwynk I'm still learning but the way I understand a psychological disorder is it's a persistent behavioral pattern that can affect multiple areas of your life. I think writing with your left hand or loving orange shirts doesn't qualify because you can choose not to do it and could live just fine without. But if you couldn't function without orange shirts or it started affecting your day to day decisions then I'd say it would fall into a psych disorder. I'm trying not to be offensive. Sorry.

I would argue that for a disposition, behaviour or characteristic to qualify as a disorder, psychological or otherwise, it should negatively impact on the individual rather than merely affecting them in a way which, subject to their external environment, is broadly neutral to their well being. The example for left handed predisposition is specifically chosen because these individuals to not exercise choice and cannot change voluntarily.

@berwynk ...more over, there have been attempts throughout history to re-educate left-handed individuals overwhelmingly with negative impacts on them educationally, emotionally and psychologically. The simple fact is that the pre-disposition to left-handedness is no more an innate disorder that different sexuality. The damage caused to the individual is caused by living in a right-handed world e.g. scissors that don't fit, door handles that are difficult to open. This and the reactions of others

Finally, people who find others of the same sex or both attractive, are of course liable to be subject to psychological disorders, as is the whole population. Historically the proportion of this group represented amongst those....

@berwynk I think what your pointing out here in the top paragraph is what is socially acceptable and it is true that society continuously shapes its perspective on what is accepted in the culture, but what i'm trying to learn is whether homosexuality meets the criteria of a psychological disorder regardless of its acceptance (i know even saying the phrase "psychological disorder" has a negative connotation to allot of people)

This is at least in part to do with the fact that surveys of 'homosexuals' and 'bisexuals' tended to concentrate on those presenting themselves to medical practitioners as being unwell. As such many of these surveys say little more than that those in a Doctor's surgery are more unlikely to be ill than the rest of the population. Finally, finally, the same high levels of apparent...

@berwynk ...pathology were to be found amongst people with a left-handed predisposition. However, as societal attitudes have changed and attempts at re-eduaction have declined if not disappeared (at least outside of some traditional/literalist religious communities such as Islam as practised in parts of Iran) so the over-presentation of psychological within this community has declined and disappeared.
Hope this is all food for thought - it's not meant as a lecture simply a stimulous for debate

If you are born with blue skin and its just a genetic thing, that means you are not a walking contagious disease, you just are blue. The same concept is for people that are gay: you can be "oh look that person is gay I won't get near them because I will catch 'gay'." No it does not work like that. Again, IT IS NOT A DISEASE OR VIRUS, it is the the way a person is.

I like to sarcastically respond with "She woke up one day and said 'I want to be hated, ridiculed, and not have any of the rights other people have....I'm gonna be gay!" People probably do not have the choice to be gay - recent studies indicate a "gay gene." Aside from that, there is no logical morals/values that are against someone being gay. It's almost like saying that I think you're immoral because you were born with a certain shaped nose. (This is, of course, leaving religion out of the "Logical moral values" as I'm defining "Logical" as being supported by considerable evidence / studies.)
