The trouble is, if you do this, you're actually giving all the "official" religions more power. You won't get Heavy Metal recognised as a religion - look what happened to the Jedis at the last Census. And if you're doing it just as a protest then you're playing into the hands of the traditional religions - better just to simply select "no religion" and get the numbers up of those who aren't part of the sanctimonious "we're official, you're not" religions.

I don't see why people are getting so uptight about this proposal. If you'd actually looked into it you'd see that the reason they're doing this is because on the last census, Jedi came up as the 4th largest religion in the UK, so by getting a big group of Metalheads to put Metal as their religion will be a massive 'fuck you!' to the fact that religion seems to be a valid part of our society... which it shouldn't be! And secondly... it's just a bit of fun, so lighten up!

Those are just fantasy themed lyrics and they're not meant to be taken seriously. They are just a form of escapism and they are not supposed to make any serious supernatural, metaphysical nor moral claims about reality. You can find some really deep ideas in them only if you're a teenager or if you never read serious literature or philosophy. Don't get me wrong! I love metal but if you look at it objectively, you have to admit that the most of the metal lyrics are just plain silly and infantile.

Anyway, I believe that turning heavy metal into a religion is retarded because metal is supposed to glorify individuality and honor the communal spirit of brotherhood between like-minded individuals who resisted the herd mentality of contemporary culture. In that sense it's a counterculture.
