  • I really appreciate your music man, you and the musicians in this are filled with real nice feel. A big fan of you and your music!

    Skimo

  • Or is the sheet music available?

  • Have you actually recorded this as a finished song? would love to buy a copy as a finished piece of music

  • i want jamal's dvds so bad but my inet connection is super slow :(

  • I am not overcomfident with regards to the Bass player's timing - he seems tense - he needs to relax a wee bit

  • i think at the part of the "slug" u (the pianist Jamal) should've did what the bass player was doing . sorta like slapping, but instead have the bass player doing like harmonics or just sustaining the groove

  • Hi, your stuff is simply incredible, but I do have a question. I make Hip Hop beats and would like to incorporate this beautiful style into my beats, however, I have no piano skills, would it still be useful for me to buy these dvd's? I'd just like to learn to be able to make progressions quickly and make them original at the same time.

    Thanks in advance

    HD

  • @HybridDragons you can just look up jazz chords really i do the same stuff and after playing piano alot and experimenting with different jazz chords (i.e. 7 chords , dimminished chord etc..) it becomes second nature kinda...im not the dude in the vid but im in a similar boat..just practice really its the best way to gain that type of knowledge

  • no NO NOOOOO! WHAT DO I DO WITH MY RIGHT HAND! >:"O!!!

  • the chord is nice... bass tone very good.. really laid back... but, i'm not so comfortable with this... sorry...

  • It's a nice progression idea. I would only recommend your drummer and bassist to think of swingin' it just a little more as they lay it back to really get that phat D'Angelo vibe going. Also when the group is layin' back like that, it's really important to listen, watch and "feel" each other, or else it can turn trashy on you in minute. Y'all are gifted. Stay Blessed

  • I'm a young musician and I thank u 4 this cuz that's wat I I to play like

  • real jazz

  • hello..who is the bass player??

  • i want more of this guy... upload more gospel church songs plz.. with thoes FAt gospel chords.

  • that is impresive

  • shit that's tight. It's funny how it ends right before you start explaining the right hand! I guess I'll have to buy the dvd.

By the way, is slugging it a widely used term?

  • Nice slug groove! Its hard to explain this sort of feel to people who don't come from a "black" gospel or neo soul background, Its difficult to explain. You just feel it or you don't. Robert Glasper and his crew of musicians including Chris Daddy dave on drums have this pretty much perfected as well. Keep up the great work man, your inspiring alot of cats!!

  • From the videos I've seen so far I would love to learn more neo soul from you.I was just wondering in this dvd do you cover chords in every note of the scale of the key you are playing in or do we have to know these chords already?

  • i have this dvd and i never opened it!!!

  • What sound is that for keyboards?

  • @musicboard1512326 rhodes man very beautiful sound. ny favorite keyboard

  • @3rdperiodbassbeats Thank you

  • I bet the drummer won a competition or something to experience playing in a band as a drummer, because he obviously holds the sticks for the first time in his life.

  • this would rock with a different drummer

  • @kimmeisme NO it wouldn't, because he's playing "pocket".

  • yeah yeah yeah but i've searched around for the DVD and can't find it cause everytime i try to internet order it, never goes through completely haha

but seriously those voicings are RIDICULOUS and i've spent hours trying to write out a chord chart by ear

    not progressing well haha

  • @Shamanhearts91 You can purchase with PayPal....I'll figure out something to hook you up, because I know how it is when you want some chords so bad and just got to have it....

  • Man i just want the basic chords haha, the stuff is sick as hell but i just want to play THIS jam

  • @Shamanhearts91 Hahaha...thanks man! You know I have DVDs that teach you Neo Soul and all this stuff right?

  • beautiful i just need the chord progressions though..lol

  • Love the chords

  • I <3 Jamal

  • where can i buy this DVD?????

  • @Clement8617 Click on the link in the Description.

  • Jamallllllll lol ! Heaviest man on keyz !

  • By FARRRR!!!!! my favorite keyboard player

  • I am very impressed. This is outstanding and seems very professional and legit. Lots of other "online schools" promise THE ULTIMATE THING and feature "KILLER KNOWLEDGE" but this looks rather pro and not-rip-off.

  • great bass playing, not a huge fan of the Lakland tone though...

  • YES! That was hot! Gotta love this dude!

  • im not religious but your music is lovely :D

  • Man I could listen to this all day! Great job :D

  • I really need that vibe on our next album, keep one of those tracks handy. I'll be searching you out!!

God Bless & Keep doing your thang!!

  • Can I meet you in person, man? lol

  • I'm in Orlando playing at a church....Anytime man!

  • I'm gonna have to come check yall out at Faith World one Sunday.

  • @GospelMusicians In what church do you play?

  • i like the phase shift... :)

  • i don't even care to learn to play. I'll just sit and listen

  • that bass is funkyyy

  • does anyone know what is earcanning is?

  • He's talented, but he wasn't trying to take the spotlight from the keyboard instructional DVD.

  • If by wack you mean Absolutely amazing, then you're correct.

  • no like suck! if you wanna hear a real bass player, check out my man kevin walker right here on you tube!!! he's the real deal

  • Are you serious??? look at his dvd on bass tech. Then come and tell me he's whack

  • well there are bass players and then there are real players,he plays bass, yes, but like i said you wanna hear the real deal check out KEVIN WALKER,who has toured with prince, justin timberlake, also been in bass player mag.also toured with many jazz artist. check him out and then tell me

  • he better than you

  • can u recommend some bands that play this style?

  • Jill Scott, Eryka Badu, Musiq Soulchild, D'Angelo, Angie Stone, Ledisi...

  • if you listen to the beginning to the video, he'll tell you why the bass is kinda off

  • Maybe I'm just a beginner, but what's up with the bass? Is it out of sync?

  • I can imagine you ask. But that's called swing!! when the bass is just a bit off, it gives it that laid back feel :)

  • i don't understand. is the bass suppose to go ahead of the beat and behind the beat constantly like that? please suggest me some great neo soul ensemble. i'm very interested in the style.

  • Osaze, if you take away some of them notes then groove changes,..DAMN IT Are you even a musician?

  • Finally somebody with music understanding!

  • What program is this? I love you tutorials!! God bless you.

  • It's called MIDI Keyz. You can check it out at MIDIculous (dot) com!

  • Some people just don't understand the groove of neo-soul. I'm glad I do and I love it.

  • I feel you. gotta love that off beat shuffle, swing, groove...whateva you wanna call it.

  • ... tell me about it... ppl gotta get up on their musical knowledge... everybody on this clip is smashin'... clearly the bass player is layin' BEHIND the beat... & it's BEAUTIFUL!!!!

  • there is no specific way to play neo soul drums, its the chords n rifs that count u na mean. that is what i need to learn the chrds n riffs

  • post your bass playing for us all?

  • AGAIN POST ANYTHING YOU CAN DO?lol

  • for sure it will be with less notes LOL. Don't get me wrong the keyboard player and drummer are suffering check what the keys player tell him around 1:17.

  • I will do ....

  • No you suck!!!!!!!! If you dont even play the bass how you gone say he suck and you know nothing about the bass. And he must be doing something right if he is playing for Jamal hartwell. So out of respect to the bass player if you cant even play the just shut up.

  • Listen stupid, go and take the wax of your ears and get some sense in that little brain of yours. he is rushing you idiot. You just have to know MUSIC to realize someone SUCKS. The keyboard player is amazing and the Drummer is excellent, but their choice on the bass player was really bad. Maybe they need it to do the video and real bass player could not make it.

  • @ tallersica,

    ur right!

  • thanks. I hate mediocrity.

  • y'all music is tight man, i really want to learn to play neo -soul chords and riffs. like artisit like d'angelo musiq jill scott and othere artist along those lines. some one hel :S

  • wow...i hear a mix of swing shuffle and 8th notes on high hat.....what do u guys think?

  • Hahaha...Yea I hear that! If you look at some of my other videos we actually did that too with some solos! Yep..we already did that! GOOD EAR!

  • thnx man.....im curious...is that the way to play neo soul on drums? im a bit confused

  • This is the style o music i been after for a while!-if i had the money id be able to play some o this on one o my 3 keyboards!-Damn Hip hop-im gonna go find some tutorials!

  • Go to the link on the description and you can learn everything I do. I have a couple of DVDs teaching Neo-Soul chords and style.

  • GospelMusicians: you need to produce a dvd that introduces this style to beginners. Explain in clear language the blues basics and simple jazz then expand it to show how to play soul and r&b using that knowledge, with the simplest of chords. The stuff I have seen demonstrated is FAR too advanced to even begin to get into this without having a solid grounding in jazz. Its like trying to work out a magicians tricks. Make it simpler please, I don't need a million chord voicings just the basics.

  • @maccagrabme I have a DVD for this. It's called Urban Phatness Gumbo!

  • @maccagrabme Then go get a piano teacher start from zero, with some classic basic education some jazz R&B,and most of all try to replicate your fav songs by hear.Once youa re there this DVD would be perfect for you as a basic keybaordist and take the next step.Ain no magic pill.Listen,PLay and practice,no magician trick unless you have basic skills on keys

  • This jam kinda reminds me of Love by Musiq for some reason

  • Sighhh, in order to play this you'd have to be really advanced in piano, huh? Too bad I'm just a beginner. =[

  • the reason y it sounds churchy is cause thos jazzy chords are used a lot in gospel songs,, when they were origionally used in jazz and neo soul... but thats y u should improvise with playing off chords and just go beast mode

  • Comment removed

  • still sounds too "church-y"

  • this is the kinda a music i feel passionate about, only if i had 50 dollars i would have bought the DVD long time ago....

  • I love R&B/Soul/Neo-Soul/Jazz/Blues

  • NASTAY!!!!

  • im looking for artist who play this kind of music... please... anyone can tell throw me some names?

i love the feeiling of this

  • Jill Scott, Musiq Soulchild, Erika Badhu, Angie Stone, the Roots,

  • thank you very much! keep doing theese stuff!

    it lights peoples hearts

  • D'Angelo as well

  • D'Angelo

  • i actually i was looking for something with less hip hop, and more jazzy, with those twisted keyboard chords, but thanks for your advice :)

  • trust brother musiq soulchild is great for this kinda music

  • I agree!

  • Very Good ^^ !

  • Your content rocks! Thanks! See my channel!

  • that aint jazz thats smooth jazz stop fronting bro!!!!!!!!!!

  • smooth jazz is still jazz

  • uh .... ...... .....

  • i'm diggin this groove!

  • Um, yea...I really didn't know that neo gospel existed! This is HOT! But I have to say this...if my flesh wasn't completely crucified before I went into church and I heard this, I wouldn't be able to worship..my desire would not be to praise Him! lol JK! Great job!! Especially the bass! ;)

  • thats the point i think moans to get that choppy sounds...if th bass was reall muddy and deep it probably wouldnt sound that good

  • its meant to sound like that....like slugging almost

  • jamal, great job, i understood what you were doing. I can now play a little neo!

  • Hahah...thanks :)

  • man that bassist is gittin it! bring the FUNK!

  • his tone is sooooo sick! I need to start hitting up the stores again and trying out different basses!

  • That Drummer is kinda off... Sound real good though...

  • Its supposed to be like that. Its called "slugging"

  • yea...hes off

it would of been better if he was on beat

  • its slugging. yall dont know music?? its jazz man.

  • this... not only makes me wanna make love...it makes wanna learn how to play it as well...

    no lie

    nice work!

  • get your mind right!

  • I'm a poet, this is the type of music I need in the background...does anyone know who CD is like this in Jazz or gospel...but no singing.

  • Take'em to church.

  • NICE DOC'

  • The second time, the real "sluggish" sound is too much for me. I'm feeling the first groove though!

  • This is off the chain doc.

  • Yo Jamal, I luv this groove man...Keep them coming!

  • What kind of bass is he using(Brand/Model)?

  • wow! this is my stuff right churr!

  • hot groove...keep it up!

  • Man I've been following you for some years and this is a really sick groove, keep up the good work man, God Bless!!!

  • Thanks a lot :)

  • how do i get my hands on this stuff!!! i wanna learn this please hit me up asap!!! :)

  • Look at the description and click on the link or visit the website as it says in the title orrr....go to my channel and click on the banner. I'm trying to figure out what the easiest way to direct people, even though it's in the title and description.

  • as long as the music comes from a genuine place in your heart and it is drawing people into an honest relationship with God, the genre the music is being played in is irrelevant...a B-flat 7 chord in the coffee house is still a B-flat 7 chord in the church

Thomas A. Dorsey faced the same type of scrutiny from "church folks" back in the early 20th Century from the "church folk", for the same music (blues) that is now being called TRUE gospel music (whatever that means)...know the history.

  • oh and jamal hahah im lovin this vid where can i get this dvd this is sick man i love it i could use it with my playin..

  • but my friend i understand where u are coming from the church does take things to far and we should use some discretion when it comes to these kinds of things but i want to help u to have an open mind because our ways are not his ways and our thoughts not his thoughts...so just try and have an open mind to these kinds of things music is an important factor in the church and it can lead souls to Christ no matter wat genre it is adapted from i hope this helps u God Bless

  • Have you purchased any of my DVDs? It's kinda hard to look at a 2 minute clip and understand the totality of what I do. The title of the DVD is Urban Worship and songs like Lord I lift your name on high, Anointing fall on me, Speak to my heart. For it is written when Peter says, "Jesus, there are others that do miracles, should we forbid them. And Jesus answers, Who ever is not against me is for me."

  • At the rate of how music is going now, the only thing we'll be listening to is old school gospel. No Kirk Franklin, no Tye Tribbett, no Cross Movement...etc. Not sure if you have ever heard of a rapper by the name of Da Truth. He received his Doctorate in Theology and you can't tell me he doesn't preach the Word through Hip-hop.

  • if thats wat it takes for me to when or reach a lost soul then to God be the Glory.but remember we must always keep our focus

  • every one is so concerned with the outward appearance..but the the bible says man looks at the outward appearance but God looks at the heart..so we shouldnt judge other peoples ways of doing things if we dont know their heart...ima musician for my church and we are very strict when it comes to this kind of stuff but when it comes to winning souls im not gonna let me not knowing how to play country bluegrass stop me from winning or reaching someone..

  • i used to fell it was bad to rap about holiness and adapt to worldly styles until i read this..if me adapting to an r&b style of music so that i might win a soul then to God be the glory..because people in the world might not understand or might not be able to get with the "traditional church" way of doing things.so i would rather adapt to them instead of lettin them continue to be lost..but the key is for us not to lose our focus and to always keep Christ first and to always obey the word of Go

  • you know for one i dont think we should Say God doesnt like something if it isn't in the bible...and i used to feel the same way about holy hip hop and r&b and stuff like that too but..i read in 1 cor 10:19-23 and it talks about making yourself as men so that u might in some..my point is this..if i rap holy hip hop and souls are reached and someone gets saved through me message is God mad..no all of heaven will rejoice..

  • Neo Soul, Jazz, Gospel, R&B, Classical are all genres of music that describe type ans style of music. Your words, your heart, your actions describe who the music is glorifying. One hip-hop artist can rap about drugs, cars, and women and another hip-hop artist can rap about Christ and salvation.

    It's not the Hip-hop that's wrong! It's the message!

  • I agree with you 100%, but im not God. what about God? it dont matter what you feel, or what I feel. What about God? do you think he is pleased with the ORIGIN of hip-hop NOT being holy? & having it turned around & presented to him? consider all the messages in the bible when isreal worshiped false gods and made bad sacrifices to the lord... was he pleased? the answer is no. God gives us free will, dont mean what we do is holy in his sight. judgement will let people know if it was ok or not.

  • I agree with the message being wrong. if i have a good reason 2 rob a bank, I dont think God is going 2 let me slide. music itself is not evil. God is NOT the author of confusion, many christians r confused, wavering between the world & christ, unsaved look @ christians & dont see any difference in lifestyle, cloaths or music, so why would they want 2 b saved if the whole church look & sound like the world? we supposed 2 b the salt & the light. how can we shine if were using the worlds light?

  • A Bm7th chord is a Bm7th chord no matter if the person playing is in the church or not - music is music. The lyrics separate "worldly" music from gospel music.

What's unfortunate is how the world pays musicians for their skill, and the church will "demand" you be skillful, play for 3 services a week, plus funerals and then "offer" you 75.00 a week - maybe.

The best keyboardists and singers in the world come right out of the church, but can't make a living there. Ask yourself why is that?

  • I only ask for payment if I'm playing for another church. It's all about doing what I'm called to do and the ministry. Not about getting paid.

  • unfortunately the world accepts "worldy" music but does GOD honor mixing "wordly" music with Gospel music. The bible shows so many examples of Gods anger when saints mix in with the world. Be ye separate sayeth the lord... but sense "worldy" people inside the church allows this to go on, no one is stopping & thinking about is God pleased? its better to please God than 2 please man. Just because the pastor feels its ok, is it OK with GOD? what sounds good may not be holy. consider what ive said.

  • Do you mean worldly music styles or the lyrics being sung.

  • God has no comprimise or wavering when it comes 2 what is holy. We can argue & rationalize Gods word till our face turns blue. Gods words where very clear. Man want to take Gods words & twist it to make what the flesh wants seem holy. There is a way that seems right to a man, but the end thereof is death. not just physical, but spiritual. many gospel musicians DO adapt other musical styles and then call it gospel. so what would be the difference in the church or @ a club? consider what Ive said
