  • Much better than the competitions we have here.Fuck football, lets slice some shit with a Katana

  • I don't get demonstrational cutting. You don't cut like that in real combat, too telegraphed and slow. Testing cutting I can agree with, it's done to practice edge alignment, but this? Sword resilience testing?

  • @Ranziel1 It's a competition to see who can cut the most mats i think.

  • @Ranziel1 We are in the 21st century pal, today in combat we use firearms. There is no need to train to use a Katana or any other sword for that matter in combat.

  • @FR0STY0115 There are more reasons to train in martial arts than practical implications. Like plain fun, competition, fitness etc. Nevertheless, you must do it right.

  • @Ranziel1 Yes I suppose that is true.

  • I was noticing his footwork as well. He raises his front foot quite a lot, and the swing looks dangerously big. But I'm no expert, and there is a difference in cutting and practicing form,

maybe it really takes a lot of force too.

But his angle is consistent throughout the cut, and that is VERY important.

  • Those do look like 3 years old bamboo, which is the stuff the shinai and the rockets are made from... if im wrong... does his form seem off... his footwork mabey... and timing...

  • I think people overestimating the Katana.

You only need to watch the cold steel cutting tests of different swords. The Katana is not better than any blade designed for cutting, or not prettier.

  • This will cut a body eaaaasy :D

  • @holmganghamburg these people practice swordsmanship for real..they won't have problem with you moving

  • The sword was made by Mr. Nigara of Aomori Japan.

  • What sword was used?

  • like butter

  • bowken

  • me too thats funny.

  • its not moving, its not fighting, and you killed it...

    wow, impressive...

    ever tried moving targets?

  • @holmganghamburg Das ist keine Animescheiße! - Nein, das ist echt! Keine stinkenden Winkinger hier?

  • i am watching this because i watched metal gear rising revegenace trailer now i am impressed with katanas and tameshigiri

  • @phoenixking1234 me too.

  • yoshimitsu... Win!

  • I'm a dumbass on this matter but i sure did liked it! specially the angle of cut and his leg movement wow ;) just wonder why is it that all videos are american? don't japanese practice their arts anymore or the americans like to show off and brag?

  • finally a nice clean cut on youtube that i can enjoy

  • COOOL!

  • @BenchHobby5468 or 3 xD

  • @BenchHobby5468 ok skill enough to aim, some force and the ability to slice.

  • I cut twenty five.

  • some random guy did 8 already.

it takes no skill with a sharp weapon, but yes this guy is a pro and his angle was better.

  • @rogantu

Actually a sharp sword is not enough. The guy cutting 8 is not cutting rolled up goza (cross weaved and stitched tatami mat), which is very hard and difficult to cut. He and many others are cutting rolled up wara, (loose straw not woven and not stitched),this is called wara giri and is very easy to cut.

The goiza on the other hand is soaked in water for a day or so to make the density similar to a human neck.

  • @Mizutani53 oh ok thanks for the great info, mate!

  • @rogantu Completely wrong. It does take skill because tameshigiri swords are designed to break f the angle and cut speed are even slightly wrong. Cutting through even one is challenging

  • The awkward moment when you accidentally stab yourself in the stomach when trying to sheath your sword.

  • Tatami don't cut back.

  • I was like no way hes gunna cut all them....HOLY SHIT O_o

  • Damn... thats like cleaving someone in half.

  • Dont think im hating but I would not be inpressed if a sword like this could cut through 12 of the things. Really

  • @killa2dacore I think it becomes a question of would 12 of them fit inside the swing arc, and I think the answer is: no.

  • @420Rokn come on man you know what i meant.

  • thats six heads severed

  • the really incredible thing about this, is that he found the center in all those targets.

  • Niiiiice!!!!

  • 0:25 haha couldnt think of better words.

  • sugoi!

    Nice one, good job.

  • is it very hard to cut that? he makes is look so easy though

  • @KennyNumberOne If you don't cut it at a certain angle, the sword will get stuck I believe. He had to slice it in that perfect angle through all 6 of them.

  • lightsaber is superior :)

  • good technique !

I Hope some day can do that !

  • @pyson89 its wet sheets of some sort of weed/grass that are rolled up into tubes, resembling human limbs...

  • May sound stupid for some, but can you actually cut a human been or maybe a cow by half? I'm curious, you may not have done it before but probably you know what can or can't do with your Katana.

  • @plastiko1291 Read the reply to AZURA888 above for the answer

  • If you are hurt by a katana, you don't feel pain... at the beggining ;)

  • @basilolo I bet to differ buddy. I have been cut by one many times. From me and friends messing around with them and I have been sharpening knives since I was 11 so my swords stay sharp. I have been cut by razors and many razor grade edges on swords(Katanas) and knifes. Trust me you will feel it the second the blade gets to a nerve. Unless of course you have some kind of problem feeling pain..

  • awesome awesome cut

    Thank you.

  • Nope. Imagine getting sliced by a nice katana or a rusty european broadsword. I would definitely prefer the katana.

  • scarry... very

  • Some of that terrifying swords (katanas) really can cut a human body by all its section, it isn't a myth that was like to cut butter.

  • I guess that is true. Cutting these targets offers no resistance at all and is like cutting air. That is providing your angle is correct and that your technique is good. On a bad day and when you arent concentrating correctly then you realize just how hard these targets are to cut. They say that 5 of these targets are equal to a human body and one is equal to a human neck.

  • @Mizutani53 I thought 1 was a human arm and not a neck? might just be me though.

  • @AZURA888 Have you ever tried to cut a human in two?

  • @AZURA888 No, Just... no. Ever heard of... say, bones?

  • @AZURA888

Cutting one body wasn´t much in agent times it´s possible just with a wakizashi, there a storrys about cutting a horseman in half together with the sattle,... it´s just technique and mind.

  • awesome cut! *bow*

  • Thank you very much. And Ninjitsu does rock. Cheers.

  • Thank you very much for your nice comment.

  • Beautiful cut. I've only seen a handful of swordsman that have been able to cut more than 5 targets.

  • To IshiYamaRyuSeattle Thank you very much for your nice comment. It is very much appreciated.

    Good and safe training

  • To answer a few email questions that I have been asked.

Each contestant only gets one chance 1 cut only and all swords are made in Japan by registered sword smiths.

The tameshi is rolled tightly and soaked in water for 3 days.

The condition of the tameshi is good. They dont use old worn out easy to cut goza.

This is a national contest so these rules are followed exactly.

On this day the average cut was only 2 to 3 tameshi targets.

  • Please note that a common trick in uncontrolled tameshi cutting displays is to loosely wrap the goza and only soak in water for a few hours. This makes the targets very easy to cut.

  • Excellent cutting, though i must confess that from my experience the longer you soak the targets the easier they are to cut,i might be mistaken though.

  • Hello and thank you. If the goza mat is old and worn out then soaking longer will make them soft. But Gaza in new and good condition will soak up the water and become harder. One soaked for a day is very easy to cut. 3 or 4 days are very hard. Another factor is temprature. If it is warm or hot they are easy to cut. If it is say under 15 deg C. Then thay become hard. The above contest was in Tokyo in November and the hall has no heating and was snowing outside so Very cold.

    Cheers

  • Nice cut!

  • Great Job !!!
