Yeah man...my country had a golden age back those days....Nadia, Nastase, Dobrin, Hagi and many many others...because everybody was practicing sport, man. Sport was the religion of the youths here. Nowadays it sims that computers and everyting that the technology brought stopped the sport activities of the youths...that's kinda sad..
Excuse my off-topic comments, happy new year to everybody and respect!
(cont) It was good to hear Andrew Castle on the BBC praising Ilie ("fantastic player") when talking about the ATP World Tour Finals 2011. Nastase won the WTF 4 times - surpassed only by Federer, Lendl and Sampras. And he beat Borg (and the rest) regularly when he kept his head together. Roger had help getting his emotions under control - Ilie did not. Nor did he have a manager or a team of helpers - worth remembering. Like Roger, he made the game look easy and was almost never injured.
Thanks, Disbesa! How little some people here know about Ilie. He was the first ATP World No 1 and achieved that despite being largely self-taught, having no money and never travelling to the west until age 20 (completely missing the junior circuit). With the possible exception of Federer he was probably the most naturally gifted player who ever lived and he was a joy to watch. He had had 3 books written about him by the time he was 27. Maybe some commenters here should read them.
People always say that Borg is better than Nastase because he beat him at the finals, may I remind everyone he beat Borg at a tennis show before the tournament bu because of that loss in the finals people think Borg is better. I don't agree though.
Very entertaining as a tennis player. Very controversial as a person. The statements he made were often quite ignorant. He is also one big failure in his personal life, this man cheated on his wife and therefore his kid daughter on every chance he got. Scumbag
@glutamin111 I agree with all those things. Even though he made a HUGE mistake, I know sport legends who have made bigger. I'm not trying to start an argument but maybe he had personal issues with his marriage. Although I kind of have to be honest and say he's having his fourth wedding.
(continued) Why is he so low on the list? Because he wasn't fit to lick the dirty jockstrap of all time greats like Federer or Sampras or Borg. In fact, he wasn't even as good as his contemporaries like Ashe or Kodes. As sad, wasted shell of a man.
I am not sure why you are so insulting, normally I would expect this off one of the kids.
Nastase's record, while falling short of his potential, is very respectable. A year as number 1, over 80 titles, an excellent doubles career with slams in regular and mixed d.
Its amazing you would rank Kodes higher whose top rank was 4. I guess its that modern slam counting bs. Judging players on things that were not considered as important back then - and ignoring the Aussie problem...
If Nastase was so great why is he so LOW on this list of Open era majors? 16 Roger Federer 14 Pete Sampras 11 Björn Borg 10 Rafael Nadal 8 Jimmy Connors, Ivan Lendl, Andre Agassi 7 John McEnroe, Mats Wilander 6 Stefan Edberg, Boris Becker 5 John Newcombe 4 Guillermo Vilas, Jim Courier 3 Jan Kodeš, Arthur Ashe, Gustavo Kuerten, Novak Djokovic 2 Stan Smith, Ilie Năstase, Johan Kriek, Sergi Bruguera, Patrick Rafter, Yevgeny Kafelnikov, Lleyton Hewitt, Marat Safin
nastase is the epithome of the qualities seen in Romanian nationals: great deal of talent, always a jokester, only showcasing his skills when they are doubted, or when struggling to climb the ladder of success
"Gee, watching, this dumbass video you would think Nastase actually won the 1972 Wimbledon over Stan Smith, instead of LOSING in five sets. When I think of Nastase I think of two things. First, he was an obnoxious pig (he actually called Arthur Ashe the N word during a match). Second, he squandered his great talent. He had the ability to win a half dozen majors, but only won two because of his lack of mental focus and hard partying. What a jackass."
@yahwhous Yeah, dude, you're a dick. He was better than everyone in Tennis today. Everyone has bad days and good days, he had the best good days most of his career.
@Gesni1 I normally don't reply to pimply, pubescent twerps who still live with there parents, but I'll make an exception this time. Nastase is better than everyone in tennis today? Better than Federer (16 slams), and Nadal (10 slams). I am not the biggest Federer fan, but Nastase wasn't good enough to carry Fed's gym bag. And he might have taken a few games off Nadal--if Nadal was carrying a couch on his back.
@yahwhous You sure are a genius. I'm 13 and you're expecting me to have my own house? I really hope you're kidding. Besides that, Nastase would entertain and no one could hit his tricky shots back at him. And another fact, I respect him because he did whatever it takes to win, piss off and insult the other player to make him angry so he loses control of the game. And that's what he did most of the time. Tennis isn't like it used to be. Now it's all boring, Nastase made things fun in Tennis.
@Gesni1 Don't expect you to have your own house. But your immaturity are betrayed in your comments, which are jejune (look it up). The point of playing tennis is to win. And how do you know how tennis used to be--because you watched a few clips on youtube? Did you ever see Laver, Rosewall or Newcombe play in the same era as Nasty? They played to win, not for entertainment. That's why they all have many more major wins than Nastase.
@yahwhous Because winning is everything right? It's not about having fun, entertaining, making people laugh, right? It's all about winning. He lost Wimbledon twice. So? He has won way more other championships besides Wimbledon which makes up for his losses. And I think you are forgetting that he was named: Number 1 Tennis Player in the World between 1973 (August 23) and 1974 (June 2).
@Gesni1 (continued) If Nastase's obnoxious (and racist) behavior was "doing what it takes to win" why did he lose 3 of 5 major finals? Stan Smith was as "boring" as they come, but he won as many majors as Nastase.
Please, save your posts and re-read them in about ten years, when you are all grown up. You'll be really embarrassed by what you wrote. Have a nice life.
@yahwhous So he lost some. Who cares? Everyone loses. He wasn't being racist, he was just doing what he does. And anyways, that guy said in a interview that from Nastase, he would have expected it since he always does that. I won't be embarrassed because my dad has his book and it talks about EVERYTHING he did. So, I wouldn't be talking if I were you. He was funny, entertaining, and he had and amazing shots. Say what you want but you know that he was better.
Great upload! I think Nastase should have won Wimbledon. 1972 could have gone either way and at times Nastase outclassed Smith with some of his stroke creation. 1976 saw an older Nastase play an injured Borg(stomach muscle) and also a man more at home on clay courts at the time. However, Nastase never really got going until the third set when it was really over. !973 was possibly Nastase best chance of winning the title when there was a boycott by the top players, yet he failed. Shame.
When visiting Sofia, Bulgaria, Vladimir Zhirinovsky Russian MP announced that neighbouring Romania was, in his view, an artificial state created by Italian gypsies who seized territory from Russia, Bulgaria and Hungary.

@yahwhous I made this vid just with the intenttion to show a bit of his talent for tennis, not to judge his social prejudices. I agree that he spoiled many chances to win more GS anyway, but no matter if he ended up losing the match Nastase was the kind of player who performed "the shot of the day".
@yahwhous First of all Ilie was so talented that he could win a match playing with his weak hand, he had so mach love for life and people that he many times preferred to loose the mach but make the public laugh and be happy. Second you cant comment to somebody that is million times above you. You and all you inbreeding siblings didn't do in life 1% of what he did. So take a rest and look back at your life. You'll realize your just a hater that nobody needs.

@mamamya11 Oh please, enlighten us with the truth about Nastase, which only you seem to know. Sorry to break it to you, but you, I and anyone else are entitled to evaluate public figures, such as athletes, based on their performance and behavior. Nastase under-performed and acted like a jerk, and a racist. If you wish to dispute that, do it with facts.
great video, amazing work, super style of Ilie, great work, amazing tribute ..funny footwork on service, but great volleys, amazing grass players, super passing shots, nice volley..he had true "touch" for that ball..nice
A great book to read is Richard Evans "Nastase". A fantastic biography written in 1979 or thereabouts. I was too young to watch him play back in his prime but it was fascinating reading. Not as talented as some think but a tremendous athlete and entertainer and definitely on the forefront of the open era transformation of tennis as a big time sport. His was a touch game and the last person with this kind of magic was Krishnan but alas the era of tennis artistry died with Edberg.
