I really love the lyrics, the Orpheus metaphor. And it's easy to see RW is sincere. But I must admit I really don't like the music. I think there could be a much better melody to this song. Sorry to the fans.
This song is gonna be in my school's version of 'Metamorpheses.' (Though i'm sure it'll do the original no justice.) I'm pretty stoked. It's a beautiful piece, full of passion.
to those who are wondering why his diction is so horrible (in his earlier albums) he was using meth... if you listen to Release the Stars or see him in concert, his diction is nearly perfect.
Jeff buckley had such a magnificent impact on a lot of musicians... not just in terms of his music, but his passion. And I think that's more powerful. He's often not talked about in conversations about influential musicians in the 20th century... I think 'grace' is really a seminal work, and i'd say was more pivotal than radiohead's ok computer.
hmm...i'd say almost as pivotal. but i hear you about the passion he had and how that seems to connect with musicians and performers most of all. but his musicianship was phenomenal, also. and he should be commended for that for sure.
Great song, fantactic meanings, awful, dreadful diction. Ruind the performance. Someone of this standard should be able to express his words clearly. Shocking, and a shame.
I thought Rufus sang that song splendidly, I know when I first heard him sing his voice sounded muffled to me; I think that may be the case for you. However, once you become accustomed to his voice the words become elucidated and you can hear him perfectly. It is the same case for Eddie Vedders voice too, it just takes time.
it must have been really hard for him to sit down and plead for something so incredibly impossible, jeff to come back,i cannot keep my mind on this thought not even for a moment, let alone to dwell on that for years.because his song is going to haunt us all for ever.rufus can be very unhappy sometimes, sweetly though.i cried about the ophelia metaphor.Jesus!he's a master in words and ideas.
The song is about his professional jealousy of Jeff Buckley or something like that. He didn't actually hate him - he respected him - but he couldn't really write a song about that could he?
its funny i love like u2, coldplay, oasis, audioslave..ect. But i just fell in love with rufus, i got all his albums and there is not one song i dislike !! his music and the way sings just makes me happy and inspired. Great Musician!! go rufus!
how could any one hate jeff buckley?? So he really envied him / his success & popularity to the point of wanting to *hate* him. That's a bit ridiculous... I don't think he's a very good person if it took "meeting" Jeff Buckley to actually decide to like him. Many fans & contemporaries of J.B. never got a chance to meet the man, yet all love him so much... and this man *hated* him until he got to meet him?? That's crap! He shouldn't have gotten that chance he didnt deserve!
Rufus was jealous of JB. There was a club in NYC that JB was always playing that Rufus couldn't get a gig at. When the two met in bar, Rufus realized JB was a really nice guy, and was obviously upset by his death. This song is more about JB death than about Rufus's jealousy of him.
And the story goes that he resented Jeff for all the hype Jeff was getting in New York, until one night when he came home and listened to Hallelujah in the dark, and realized that Jeff was truly as great as everyone said. But they really never spent much time hanging out, which is why I marvel at how sincere this song is.
I am a huge fan of Rufus and Jeff both. This song breaks my heart more than any other song I've ever heard- and he didn't even really know Jeff! That's the depth and genius of Rufus Wainwright for you.
the first song that told me Rufus Wainwright was an outstanding talent was Imaginary Love. I've seen him maybe twelve times in concert. Never met him though I live in Montreal.
Weird world. It's 4 in the morning and I woke up because I was starving. While preparing myself a meal, I was singing Memphis Skyline in my head. With my plate I came in my office, started eating in fron the my computer and got a message saying that a comment about Rufus had been posted !
Being myself a songwriter, I wrote a tribute song to Rufus a couple of years ago, but I never played it in public yet.
truly a work of genius. Rufus' music is as deep as the water that drowned Jeff. I hear touches of Saint-Saens and Rachmaninoff in his chords. The piano version here is so spare and raw. What a great song from the greatest songwriter of our times.
at first i thought this was one hell of a boring song.. even though i knew it was dedicated and about jeff buckley who were the greatest of em all. anyways.. do any one know how they knew/knew of each other? bring it on
on afeine1's comment. some guy said: "morrissey is a man trapped inside of a womans body" and I guess it fits into jeff as well. awesomely
Oh god...this song describes everything I felt when Jeff died. I can't help crying everytime I hear this. Rufus has the soul of an angel (a very feminine angel lol). One of his best.
TOTALLY AGREE ! Same ranking for me. What would be your third favorite song ? That one's tough... mine would probably be Hometown Waltz or Im my arms.
killer. this song is about jeff buckley, whose hallelujah rufus covered. (well, not really buckley's song, it's leonard cohen's, but buckley effectively owns it.)
