The lyrics however, are not by Thomas Tallis, but instead by Joseph Addison, published in 1712 in The Spectator.

Thomas Tallis wrote a famous tune to which the words are often sung (as printed in the English Hymnal at the turn of the 20th century ed. by Ralph Vaughan Williams) but which he composed initially as the Third Tune from Archbishop Parker's Psalter "Why fum'th in fight" in the 16th century.
