This is a nice device; I wish it wasn't tethered to a USB slot. Maybe if they made it so that it was like an ExpressCard. Then IMO it would be a great device. I just don't care to have a device hanging free by wire. IMO, there is nothing like having to carry around an extra device when what you really want is to have to carry around as little as possible. But the idea is really great, just the execution is off a bit.
I'm pretty sure you don't have to have it tethered to your computer, in it's other operating mode, it acts as a modem/router and you can just connect to it via WiFi.
That being the case, why would you want to have something else to carry around with you. If they made it into an ExpressCard type of device you wouldn't have to lug around a second device. Be easier just to have one thing to bring with you and to keep track of when you go moble.
Yea, I do see your point. I know verizon has come out with a laptop with the wireless stuff built in to it. There's got to be some reason an express card isn't marketable, probably because they aren't as universal as USB or WiFi. I know something like this device does have many useful applications though. Particularly when traveling, just have this in the vehicle and every laptop in the car can get internet...
Ya this device is very useful. I just don't like having to have to bring along a second device to do the same thing a cell dongle can do. I mean if I'm not mistaken you can network multiple computers and have them access the internet through one computers internet connection. Kind or redundant if you ask me.. lol
And I can't wait till cell devices are built standard into all laptops.. Just have to wait till cell companies lower the costs so that everyone can afford it.
Actually I'm pretty sure this device acts as a router, so you actually can leave it in the bag or what not, and up to five computers connect to it through their wireless connections (WiFi). I don't know why they have the option to connect to it through USB, I'm sure there is some reason for it.
But yea, I'm sure having the cell cards built in will be a slow process just like having wifi cards built in.
I like laptops have have cell-interfaces integrated, but I don't see it catching on so quickly in the US because of the fact that our cell carriers are not so good with the "playing well with others" thing. Most new laptops have an internal port (typcially PCIe) for adding communications devices, but who wants to be tied to an EVDO contract that could potentially outlive the useful life of the laptop? (Will you be using the same laptop in two years?)
I completely understand what you're talking about, but there ARE PC-Card and ExpressCard devices. That's not what the MiFi is about...
I've gone through three different EVDO devices in the last two years because the standard have changed. (From PC-Card to ExpressCard to USB) The MiFi would get rid of that. Furthermore, having a "mobile hotspot" makes it much easier to share or do custom applications. ( I'm using the MiFi with some wireless network cameras.)
This will work on my iPad right?

@suphomieG444,
Yes... either if your Desktop has WiFi or if you have it connected to your desktop via USB.

Wolfspirit211 2 years ago
Wolfspirit211,
Sadly, no. It's an entirely different device and you HAVE to purchase a dedicated data plan.

Saints504boy,
Some people have reported difficulties when activating on a Mac, but that was with early versions of the software. -- I had no trouble whatsoever.

Father Robert, how do you set up wireless ip (network) cameras with the mifi 2200?
oliver18754 2 years ago
oliver18754,
The MiFi 2000 acts like a regular router, so as long as you can setup your IP camera to use the SSID and WPA key of the MiFi, you should be fine.
