I love this video so much. Great version of a great song. But every time I see it I convince myself that Melissa Auf Der Maur is on bass. Can anybody confirm or deny this for me and end my stupid pointless conjecture for me?
I really hated the traffic in the background!- it really spoils my fantasy about Nick playing this on top of the world or smthn... but on the other hand, it shows just how great the contrast is between art and the places it can take you, and an everyday crowds with all their phobic traffic jams! Love you Nick!
If you "like to be left alone" and generally dislike microphones and questions there is two simple cures:
a) Don't pursue a career as an international performer and musician.
b) Don't consent to appear in televised interviews.
Nick Cave is a brilliant musican, arguably one of the best... he is also a complete wankstain with the personality of a sulky adolescent brat, you'd think after two kids he would have at least grown up a bit...

@GAFFTV I would agree with you. Perhaps he is trying to maintain a persona and/or set the mood for the intense song he was about to perform (she was so perky and bubbly). But he comes across as arrogant, rude and, yes, like a ".... brat" He has a lot in common with a troglodyte if you catch my drift.
I can't decide which I love more - this performance of The Mercy Seat, or Nick's responses to that woman.
I kind of want to see a transcript of this as an article in Rolling Stone, with a cover photo of Nick brooding at the camera lens and the headline, "Nick Cave Has Had a Couple Children and Written a Few Songs: A Shockingly Intimate and Candid Expose."
3rd favorite version, thank you for posting for you have done the world a great sevice:put more nick cave on youtube!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! seriosly though, thanks a lot.
Her name is Hikaru Nishida. She was a singer in Japan years ago a few Japanese people may know of her. Not that famous.
I would say that the comments went largely over her head, while she was trying to translate, but may have started to register toward the end. Leave alone is 'hotte oite' , it always comes across badly, regardless of the context it is put.
Good eye, it's definitely Warren Ellis on violin. He didn't join the band officially until Boatman's Call ('97) but guested from '94 on. Cave played this song for awhile, though, so not that surprising that there's a version with Ellis on it.
Wow, what a totally different interpretation of the song. The original is defiant and manic. This one is defeated, resigned, mournful. Yet another demonstration of how much thought goes into Nick Cave's art.
AHAHAHAHA...looks like he has just woke up..last night probably drinking alcohol or something..and suddenly..oops! a strange little allien with a microphone!! : "how was your life the last 10 years..?".."and the next"..?hahahaha!!

Whohoho - what made it this popversion that nearly lost it's soul - useless question; it was right for the audience. For me as a westerneuropean it sounds quite empty.
So please: Let him have some kids and wherever but not there.
look, the song is amazing, and what is a sad commentary on the commercial music world is that nick cave is not a household name. bashing the japanese segment is racist and idiotic. if they were from an american tv channel hosting their program in english i seriously doubt the same comments would be posted!
Great version, however, there was an even better version (in my opinion) from the 'Primo Maggio' concert in Italy, recorded from Rai Tre, here on YouTube, and I can't find it any longer! It's a real pity as it was an awesome version. Anyone knows if it's still available, thanks!
What she said in japanese? ..maybe Nick is big in size and music.
I believe her questions were kinda stupid maybe she was nervous but nick managed to make her feel more confortable, planning to play a song about Death Row.
love this version. love this song. only a genius could write poetry like this, and then perform it either as a gentle ballad or as heavy rock? that would blow your head off.
