  • NIKKU CAVE.

  • I love this video so much. Great version of a great song. But every time I see it I convince myself that Melissa Auf Der Maur is on bass. Can anybody confirm or deny this for me and end my stupid pointless conjecture for me?

  • @barrybrien82

    Apologies about the terrible grammar,

  • stay away from sharp objects, when listening to this song.

  • Nick did well to sum up over 20 years and then the next 10 to come.. sheesh .. don;t think i would sum my life up that well and succinctly lol

  • Her collar is epic.

  • 1:48 to skip the interview, although his responses are pretty entertaining.

  • I lold so hard. He is funny guy.

  • Martyn Casey looks like a girl here...

  • I really hated the traffic in the background!- it really spoils my fantasy about Nick playing this on top of the world or smthn... but on the other hand, it shows just how great the contrast is between art and the places it can take you, and an everyday crowds with all their phobic traffic jams! Love you Nick!

  • What year this is??

  • If you "like to be left alone" and generally dislike microphones and questions there is two simple cures:

    a) Don't pursue a career as an international performer and musician.

    b) Don't consent to appear in televised interviews.

Nick Cave is a brilliant musican, arguably one of the best... he is also a complete wankstain with the personality of a sulky adolescent brat, you'd think after two kids he would have at least grown up a bit...

  • @GAFFTV I would agree with you. Perhaps he is trying to maintain a persona and/or set the mood for the intense song he was about to perform (she was so perky and bubbly). But he comes across as arrogant, rude and, yes, like a ".... brat" He has a lot in common with a troglodyte if you catch my drift.

  • @savvy428 Well, the questions were banal and stupid and insincere.

  • He's so happy to be there.

  • Anyway, Susan Stenger on the bass, not Melissa Auf Der Maur.

  • The girl is a beautiful counterpoint for Nick! How musical their interaction! Did they go on to do more duets???

  • hahahahahahahhah i fucking lol'd hard

    nick cave = genius

  • "I'd like to be uh... left alone." This interview is hilarious!

  • Look at Warren Ellis back there being bad-ass even without a beard.

  • Dudes got kids? Damn.

  • Nick cave IS style.

  • How awkward! ha!

     Good song Nick Cave.

  • i lold

  • a very efficient interview dodge.

  • These are easily the most efficient responses i've ever heard.

  • starts 1:49

  • it's been okay!!!hahahaha

  • Great Version. Nick Cave is truly a first rate artist and poet.

  • I can´t be grateful enough of the old punk music. It seems like it bread a lot of great musicians. Nick (birthday party), Björk, Killing joke...

  • Melissa has different hair.. I love Nick Cave!

    The Birthday Party too!!

  • Is that Melissa Auf Der Maur on bass?

  • I can't decide which I love more - this performance of The Mercy Seat, or Nick's responses to that woman.

I kind of want to see a transcript of this as an article in Rolling Stone, with a cover photo of Nick brooding at the camera lens and the headline, "Nick Cave Has Had a Couple Children and Written a Few Songs: A Shockingly Intimate and Candid Expose."

  • Son starts at 1:50 if you want to scip interview for this awsome edition of this song

  • 3rd favorite version, thank you for posting for you have done the world a great sevice:put more nick cave on youtube!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! seriosly though, thanks a lot.

  • One of the greatest musician ever!!!!!!!!

  • I love his way of looking at the girl. "Should I slap her now or after the interview?" lol. Great song as well

  • caruchaaaaaaaaaaaaan

  • hahahahahaha i'd like to be left alone

  • he is so simple and just doesn't care what others think...like @kickingtheprick said...gotta love him

  • Honestly I think Nick handled those idiotic questions very well.

  • There is one good interview with him, when Roy & H.G. had their talk show. This version is amazing, so resigned and desperate.

  • "I'd like to be left alone..." Such blatent rudeness, gotta love Nick.

  • Waw, great version. Thanks Nick, for everthing. You're a real artist. I'm going to enjoy this over and over again.

  • omg, i love this version.the performerce is superb, absolutely, however that japanese woman talked too much, fucking stupid

  • I would imagine what he was most irritated at is the fact that the audience wasn't going to understand a single word sung.

  • Comment removed

  • Who's on Bass?

  • @lvpdesign No, What's on Bass.

  • "how's the last ten years been?" lol... "yeah, ok...."

such bollocks they have the put up with! Japanese presenters have a particular knack for trivializing everything..

  • Her name is Hikaru Nishida. She was a singer in Japan years ago a few Japanese people may know of her. Not that famous.

I would say that the comments went largely over her head, while she was trying to translate, but may have started to register toward the end. Leave alone is 'hotte oite' , it always comes across badly, regardless of the context it is put.

  • probably one of the best performances of this song, I think

  • is it just me or did nick look like he wanted to slap her right at the start of the interview?

  • @rhenfield LOL yes he looks intensely annoyed. He does not hide it well.

  • Good eye, it's definitely Warren Ellis on violin. He didn't join the band officially until Boatman's Call ('97) but guested from '94 on. Cave played this song for awhile, though, so not that surprising that there's a version with Ellis on it.

  • Is taht Warren Ellis on violin? What year did Warren start playing with Cave? I thought he joined on The Boatmans Call

  • На фоне смешной ведущей Ник выглядит особо зловеще :) Хорошее исполнение . Собственно как всегда

  • He is such a witty bloke, my ex told me, she didn't say what he told her, that bitch.

  • dang

  • Wow, what a totally different interpretation of the song. The original is defiant and manic. This one is defeated, resigned, mournful. Yet another demonstration of how much thought goes into Nick Cave's art.

  • i think he is ironic/ sarcastic :)))

i had a few kids and wrote a few songs :))) funny and for the future i want to have more kids and more songs :)))))))

  • AHAHAHAHA...looks like he has just woke up..last night probably drinking alcohol or something..and suddenly..oops! a strange little allien with a microphone!! : "how was your life the last 10 years..?".."and the next"..?hahahaha!!

  • Learn English!

  • Thanks for the advice. In exchange I got three for you:

    1. Learn not to judge people by their language skills; have a closer look at the content rather than at the package.

    2. Learn "english". This is not a proper noun.

    3. Go to your local box club instead to youtube.

  • what a brilliant performance. nick cave is one my very favorite. but, who the fuck is that berlinerin1234567 girl, a super woman?:)

  • Oh, that wasn't any judgement, but an advice, as you ALSO said. Don't be mad, honey. Peace.

  • NIck is fcked there.

  • he is just awesome

  • When it was recorded? Becouse 10 years ago he was addicted to heroin and alcohol, maybe that's why he's looking on interviewer so strangly?

  • nice version

  • He was irritated by the interviewer, rightly so.

  • "I'd like to be left alone..." LOL

  • Nick just looks at her and thinks: "Where the fuck did she came from??"

"I tought I was in london, god dammit"

    XD

  • ano sotto hotto kostekaite hiroshima, toyota, nagasaki, kasai park ji sung.

  • The interview always makes me laugh so much. "Had a couple of kids, wrote some songs" XD

  • Nick is amazing and reladex :-) Nice performance :)

  • Had a few kids ,wrote a few songs

I wonder how mamasan got on with the aus sense of humour, who is that on bass?

  • Stunning - every time I hear it; just incredible.

  • "What's happened the last 10 years" (in 15 seconds) LOL

  • We all know good ole' Nick had her bent over the piano once the camera's had stopped rolling! :P

  • That is the single funniest thing I've ever seen on youtube - and a damn good version of the song to boot. Thanks for posting!

  • look, the song is amazing, and what is a sad commentary on the commercial music world is that nick cave is not a household name. bashing the japanese segment is racist and idiotic. if they were from an american tv channel hosting their program in english i seriously doubt the same comments would be posted!

  • Get a grip

  • "I want to be left alone..." hehehe. He loves performing but interviews are another matter...

  • hahahahahha awesomely awkward

  • this is so weird

  • OMG this is surreal...I remember the interview I did with him in the 90's, it was a very different affair(needless to say!...)

    Great post, thanks

  • I'm sitting here crying at my desk top.

My god, have MERCY on me!

  • ? why? what's all that about.

  • LOL Look how annoyed he is getting at 1:38

  • the slow version is cool

  • omg that interviewer is insanely hot

  • Yes! she is! I totally forgot about N.C. When she spoke! I am moving to japan!

  • i hear u brother i hear u

  • here here, what a hunni. who is she?

  • Yes, it's deffo Warren Ellis. Not sure who's on the bass though. There aren't any close-ups, but it doesnae seem to be Martyn Casey or Roland Wolfe.

  • is it Warren Ellis who's playing violin?

  • no, she's not making up his answers. ;) i know a little japanese, so i mostly understand what she says.

  • I love the way he checks her out while she translates his replies.

  • Yeah, those answers were just awesome. Ask a stupid question, I guess.

  • lovely version. The complete jackass answers in the beginning make it even better. God I love him even when hes an asshole, it's amazing.

  • looooool

    nice answers!

    hahahaha!

  • Lulz, is he making chinese eyes when he's asked those questions?

  • i think he was just sleepy...

  • Send chills down my spine...

  • too cool for school :P

    Nice version

  • how can be be such a bitch ... and still be my man?

    can anybody tell me?

  • He's the exact oposite of Bono. That's why.

  • that's a good point!

  • Great version, however, there was an even better version (in my opinion) from the 'Primo Maggio' concert in Italy, recorded from Rai Tre, here on YouTube, and I can't find it any longer! It's a real pity as it was an awesome version. Anyone knows if it's still available, thanks!

  • what year is this?

  • So classy and subtle. Love him.

  • 'a couple of children, written a couple of songs' lol

    nice version.

  • hah, his answers are priceless

  • 這是西田光的經典傳譯訪問之一.

    她說話速度很快,對於略懂英語的我,很難捉到意思!

    我很慚愧....

  • Wat een gekakel..

  • just in the beginning.. still the best version i've heard of this song

  • awesome song so powerful and deep with emotion.. what else can you ask for

  • I want that dress. :|

  • this is a wicked version of the mercy seat

  • Haha, his responses are fantastic!

  • what the hell? she gets to interview nick cave and wastes his fucking time with stupid questions.

    you get what you give.

  • good version

  • hahaha I think Nick didn't want answer for this poor questions..

  • i thought his answers were solid gold....i wouldn't expect anything less

  • yes, truly, but he did seem like he wanted to be anywhere else than where he was sitting.

  • What she said in japanese? ..maybe Nick is big in size and music.

I believe her questions were kinda stupid maybe she was nervous but nick managed to make her feel more confortable, planning to play a song about Death Row.

  • good song, amazing man.

  • Lol pwnt

  • and im not afraid to die... :) yeah i bet. did i get it right, finally he is guilty in the song and pretending his innocence was a complete lie?

  • "I like to be left alone".

    Badass.

  • Hilarious, that interview was fucking hilarious.

  • Why was she pressing her mike on his face, he had one of his own!And these questions, such a cliqué...

  • His mic was for the p.a. her mic was for the live broadcast

  • best version i think ever hes done live

  • simply amazing!

    nick cave is a genious!

  • he is so funny!

  • Thanks for that. I've only heard the hard version.

  • fantastic stuff..the mans a legend

  • this interview is the definition of "pwn"

  • Yeah, he is a bit of a rude lad. I'm seeing him in Oct, I am so very excited.

  • incredibly infrequent clιp..mpravo your!!!

  • The best interview I've ever seen by a recording artist

  • you are dead right my friend... you are dead right

  • he's super ready to play I think...."I'd like to be left alone".. and have some more kids..

  • He's deft at fending off stupid and inappropriate questions.

  • love this version. love this song. only a genius could write poetry like this, and then perform it either as a gentle ballad or as heavy rock? that would blow your head off.

Nick doesnt like to be compared to other artists, but he is second to none.

  • LOL Excellent performance... Now I would like to be left alone...

  • "let's take a listen " oh what an insanely incongruous intro for this song an incedibly supreme performance

    thank you so much

  • Nick totally pwned that interview :D

  • hilarious, handled that situation like a fucking pimp.

  • sorry westost, but Cash covers Cave...

  • Uhh...Could someone cut off that blabla before Nick starts to sing?? PLEASE!!!

  • best performance i've ever seen

  • beautifull....

a grat version of that incredible song...

  • An ejaculation of splendour!

  • I'm not sure if he ment they to fuck off by "to be left alone" or if he just ment it in general. I think he seems hungover or jetlagged and was just surprised and taken off guard by the fact that the person was talking in english and asking him questions, but he could have just been in a bad mood.

    either way, nick rocks

  • Evil ^^

The song is also pretty good.

  • Nick has always had a rocky relationship with the media - who have fucked him over several times. The reason he would do a show like that is to promote his music and the tour he has been doing for the past while.

"How has the last 10 years been in your personal life?"

She asked for it - he gave it to her in 10 seconds.

  • So funny how sometimes he's all sweet and charming and other times... He is like that... LOL!

  • I apprechiate some of Cash's cover versions but the originals are always the best... Like this one.

  • Nicks such a ledge, its a point tho hes only there to sing, not to have a cosy chat. I love how unfriendly and unapproachable he is :) it wud be rubbish if he was all nice.

  • Well, if you'd like to be left alone (of which I do understand completely)...stop going on tv shows, thanks.

  • Would they have expected who they would be interviewing :D

  • Whoever says Cash's version is better should listen to this!

  • yah...no kidding...

  • What an ass! Yet why is it so funny? :D

  • baobaobao

  • brilliant, fun to play on piano too. could've done without the corny woman

  • "I'd like to be left alone."

Ouch. Nick Cave: 1, Japan: 0.

  • Nick Cave is an interview God!

"Well I would like to have some more kids, write some more songs..."

But beyond the sarcasm, very good clip!
