Zawinul was a giant of the 20 th century ...but the greatest..???? .Really..?...I guess you forgot Davis, Monk, Coltrane, ..? Don't get me wrong, Z was a giant ...
The M1 sucks no matter what.. Even though one of the greatest keyboardest ever, played it! There's no way in hell you go from double ARP 2600 to double Prophet 5, to M1's. And I like Korg mind you. That was a bad period for keyboards. Nothing but rehashed sounds. The synclavier and Fairlight were the only things really happening at that time.
I hear what you're saying but you're all over the map time-wise ...The Synclavier came out in '75 ...Fairlight in '79 and were a big deal but were so cost prohibitive. Fairlight systems started at a base price of 20 grand and ended up close to 80 and, Synclaviers? Forget about it 200 to 300 grand. I even heard of one that was half a million ...The M1 came out in '88 and was the pre-cursor to the first worksations. I didn't own one ....Waited for the Trinity ...Still have it and a Korg Oasys
I was only listing what He played. I'm only mentioning the Synclavier and Fairlight in reference to their period of prominance (Stevie, Jan MJ, Herbie) and dominance over the other keyboards. Stevie's was 500K.
@Drivethebeat The M1 sucks? You've got some weird sense of humour. It's like saying computers from the early 80ies are better than today's computers. There hasn't been a better synthesizer after the Korg M1, only quantitatively better copies. Where did you get his allegedly own words that he was using what they gave him? We're talking about Joe Zawinul here. He was completely in charge when it comes to his music and he used what he loved.
@Neidhardt84 I'm not sure we can even have this converation. Talk to me in another 26 years my friend. Your generation is only accustomed to copying or rehashing what my generation invented. I've been following Joe longer than you've been alive. Have you ever spoken to the guy or do you even play keyboards? I reiterate, He made the best of the crap that was available at the time. Having said all that, I like your taste in music, and the fact that you're from Joe's home country!
@Drivethebeat I'm not attacking your standpoint, I just cannot agree with you. Every piece of technology is a product of an evolution of inventions. The technology, and that means instruments in this case, is getting better. Unfortunately, the music is not these days. A generation or two to your would probably say, synthesizers are crap, the piano is better, athough we're talking about two different things. No, I never spoke to Joe but I play keyboards, probably not as good as you.
@Drivethebeat Joe could've used what he did back in the 70ies, yet he found his sound in later synthesizers. He wasn't using the most actual keyboards during the past 2 decades or less. The Korg M1 has been out of production since 1994, the Korg Trinity is from 1995 I think..... I guess he used them until his death because they helped him develop the sound he was looking for. I'm no friend of recent synthesizers myself but the Korg M1 is really a unique instrument among keyboards.
@Drivethebeat He was not just from my country but from the same part of Vienna as me. But as I said, I never met him in person. And thanks for checking out the music on my page.
To matamike: in his own words, he was just using what they gave him. Companies put all kinds of crap in front of musicians just to get a plug. A "beat up" Jazz with filed frets will always be better than an M1. How long you been playin'? Just kidding.. He never achieved the anti-preset sounds that he got on the Prophets (T-8, 5s). The gist of Zawinul was that he needed knobs and sliders baby. He was a subtractive synthesist. He needed to be able to SEE how to shape the sound.
In it's day; back in '88 it took all the awards at the NAMM show ...At the time, everyone was into boards like the Roland D-50 ...But, the M1 really was more musically expressive and was the precursor to the Trinity ...Now, I've never owned an M1, as at the time I was still experimenting with Midi-ing up several keys at once ...But it did get me to sit up and notice. In fact, I did get a Trinity. Still have it. These days I play my Oasys, Trinity and B-3...
