  • I played this piece one year ago in front of a judge to be rated. During the practices, we thought we were not going to do very well; we simply could not function well together as a group. However, the huge impact at FF was a complete success during our final preformance, and everyone in the group knew it. We had such an amazing communication at that moment, a link that none of us will ever forget. I absolutely adore the moments this piece brings.

  • Speaking as a performer myself, we are humans quite capable of making mistakes, especially in a live setting. I enjoyed this piece as others do. Thank you for it..

  • One person thinks woodwinds could have done it better.

  • @StephenMcCleskey one thinks its perfect with brass

  • Lets here it for North Carolina !!!

  • I love this picture of him it really sets the tone for the piece I think.

  • Good performance, but there is too much vibrato (or what sounds like vibrato) in some of the solos. Could of used more intensity in the horn part at 4:36. Also some intonation issues near 5:00. But overall not bad.

  • It just sounds like there are some wrong chords in there... as if there were some mistakes in the arrangement?

Honestly though, this is a BEAUTIFUL interpretation of the piece. Like pulvaris said, a truly emotional performance. And at the beginning of the climactic section (forgive me for my lack of proper terminology) I thought, "hmm, that high Eb in the trumpet is a little out of character" but when the build-up completed... THERE I got it... beautiful.

  • @Bbobe900000 there are meant to be dischords, it adds to the tone of the piece

  • @liamro2 You mean notes that aren't in the original composition? Because that's what I'm talking about. I know how this piece sounds.

  • @Bbobe900000 i play the it on a regular basis and at first our conductor questioned the argumentation but it turns out it is perfect.

  • @liamro2 This one or the H. Robert Reynolds band arrangement? There are no mistakes in that one... but in this brass arrangement I'm noticing some notes that don't belong there and/or are missing... for instance, at 0:52 there should be an Ab in addition to the G-Bb-Eb that are being played... then at 0:57(0:58) just for one beat someone plays a C when there should only be Bb, Eb, and F... I am just hearing this, and to me it sounds different from the original and from the band arrangement.

  • @liamro2 Actually, just listening to it I heard 8 mistakes throughout the piece. It sounds like the arranger actually removed a few of the dischords (and actually changed a C minor chord to an Ab major chord... 1:27)

  • @Bbobe900000 hate the removal of the dischords...

  • Considering this is completely instrumental, to get this sort of quality, is fantastic, you dont feel that by listening to it, but not hearing the words, that you are missing out, because the emotion is still put across so effectively besides the lack of vocals :)

  • Amen. Sometimes music says more than words do.

  • breathing must have been ridiculous

  • @vishman3000

    It is!

  • 4:10

  • heard this at the MACCC conference in San Fran couple months ago. one of my friends got to play the trumpet solo and he did really good. the sound is really big and awe-striking. great piece

  • @pizza7pizza Joe did do an awesome job of holding out those long notes.

  • the one minute mark / chord get me every time.

  • Beautiful, Song makes me cry every time i hear it. Wonderful job.

  • I would like to use this piece to teach my brass players to help them focus on intonation. The tempo and the chord structure would really make them listen to each other and help them stay in tune. The beauty of a choral piece can come close to a choir's voice if done properly. I'm glad I heard this performance, it's good to know some other brass players feel the same way about this piece.

  • A cornet would've suited this, and, sorry to say it, an engish or welsh Brass or Silver Band. Great arrangement tho!

  • who had the cough solo at :56? Nice tone

  • were playing this piece for our schools wind ensemble. i play the 3rd trombone part. beautiful piece =)

  • @JoeShmoe102

    me too :]

  • Well done but not nearly as beautiful as when sung by a chamber choir. It was, after all, written with the intention of being sung.

  • Truly one of the most musical and beautiful songs ever. Although the choral version, the original Lauridsen version, is the most gorgeous of all. Nothing else can even compare.

  • The choral version by the Nordic Chamber Choir is excellent, but the version by the Northwestern University Symphonic Wind Ensemble (on iTunes) is "up there" in its own right.

  • i love this song i played this last year in my 3rd hour band class at portcharlotte high school we played it about this fast i play tuba so i realy got to listen to this song and i love it

  • I really appreciate the speed if this performance. Far too many ensembles play it way too fast.

    My favourite piece of music.

  • Really lovely, but I agree, I don't know whether Euphonium playing the 1st Trumpet part might have sounded more mellow on the ears?

Hhhmmm, doesn't really matter, I still love this.

  • overall very nice. could be picky on the trumpet playing the upper part and point out some things but all in all its nice :)
