he did it to avoid the massive damage of the crog, because its not worth wasting the potions,

Uh the most accurate reason however is when he goes up, he waits for the crog to go up slowly to Arrow Rain it so the crog would be agitated at him, then the ranger quickly teles down and while the crog is slowly coming back down, the ranger prepares by putting a puppet so the crog hits in the opposite direction of the ranger and positions himself in an area where he can spam strafe.

crossbows have smaller strings and are for closer range than bows

Bowmen depend on what you use.. if you use a crossbow you should get STR up , if a bow get DEX, i picked when i first became a bowman to use only bows so i got DEX up.

Archers use dex to determine their strength AND their accuracy. Strength pretty much only determines the equipment you'll be able to put on.

If you make a pure dex ranger and settle for low level equips with strength on them (for the sole purpose of equipping higher attack bows), your ranger will attack with a greater damage range then one that has a normal amount of strength.

For some reason, I hear this doesn't apply to xbows though, no clue why. I wasn't an xbow user. XD
