@AssassinN8ive 2 different crash models, one head on impact, second airborne impact. Even after so many iterations XNA has gone through this still can't be reproduced exactly plus you would need custom content pre-processors. very complicated vertex shaders and god knows how much code that would make it collide with itself to deform like that. I program shit like this and I know most of the tricks in the book. Read up before posting comments like that just cause you like the "pretty crash video"
I'd guess the damage deformations might have been calculated prior to the realtime rendering of the scene.
It's really easy to shatter an object in a 3d package such as Maya or 3dsmax and to then export that scene into a realtime rendering engine - such as the one created with XNA for this video.
Just some thoughts. After all it's about the illusion of reality...
Even just the car was beast. Then, you look at the crash(es) and think "WHOA!!!!". I don't even know how they had that awesome of a model with perfect reflections and lighting while keeping realistic physics in realtime in 2004.
because in a lot of games the car does exist on real life, and engineres must pay the car companies a bit more of money to let them crash their cars... don't know why...
@Rai0fighter - I think it's because of the licensing deals. Car companies don't want their cars to be smashed on screen.
I think Motorstorm has some damage, but I don't know how their licensing is set up.
Maybe it's just because it would be annoying if a crash totalled your car and cost you the race. It would make the game frustrating for unskilled players.
@Rai0fighter - Yeah, it could be. I don't have the game, so I'll have to look it up here...
...
Well, I looked in a bunch of places and could not find anything that says Motorstorm uses licensed vehicles, so I am led to believe that yes, they made them up.
@Rai0fighter I'm guessing maybe because this scene is what you would call, "Pre-rendered". I don't think that any of the current consoles have the processing power to use these damage models in real time. You would need a power house of a computer just to run this type of application, lol.
@Rai0fighter Ok you win this one :P . Also I don't think you would see these kind of models in a racing game, because the designers want to put as much cars in the game as possible (eg. GT5 now has over one thousand cars, or is close too. Not sure), rather then how realistic they can make it. If they could optimize this "Damage model" to be created dynamically at run time, then that might be feasible. Hmm *adds "Dynamic car damage models" to list of things to implement in the future*
@CALLUMG33V3S :P yes gt5 has 1031 cars (i looked it up:P) but it does not feel like a finished product if some cars have damage some cars dont and some have a interieur and some dont thats why i stil have not buyed this game
@CALLUMG33V3S Not really, check out Live for speed, it's a racing simulator with a similar damage model and exists from 2003. It actually runs very smooth.
Because developers are in a need to churn out high detailed models with low-polygons. This is already a conflicted interest, let alone attempting real-time mesh deformation and collision detection.
LOL! That was awesome! Very impressive damage model. Only thing that didn't sit well with me was in the first collisions, where the wheels didn't get destroyed or break off. But, that was some impressive showmanship in any case! Damn you Microsoft!!!111!one!!!1 LOL! :)
well im not sure, the class i take where i from TCD, im learning how to use 3D max, and i heard from people that XNA is a programming is similar to C++, i hope that helped
I believe that, to be able to simulate such collision in real time, the model would have to be constructed from many polygons/meshes, which I believe would make a game very "hungry" for hardware. Even then, I believe it would be really hard to simulate it correctly. Most car collisions in the latest next gen games are still preset, but with more detail.
burnout is pretty crap for crashes you dont even get a chance to get a good look atyour destroyed car before it resets you and its no wear near as good as this
xna has as much potential as C# itself as it's actually that very language that it uses... it all just depends on the maker. As of right now there really aren't any good xna game developers that do three dimensional games let alone crashes like that above, i believe it was just showing what xna CAN do if in the right hands.
this should be shown at drivers' ed everywhere...talk about a way to cure lead-foot! Oh and from a 3d artist's perspective...brilliant animation :o. Love the lighting especially, and the car, well, the car speaks for itself ;)
As you may have already inferred. XNA Game Studio 3.0 Books aren't out yet as the official version hasnt been released. There is, however, one book published for 3.0, but best to steer clear of it as there may well be changes to 3.0 when the final version ships. All the required software is available off microsoft site.
Visual C# 2008 Express Edition that is... If you want to get XNA 2.0 then you need Visual C# 2005. But i'd recommend jus going with Visual C# 2008 Express Edition + XNA 3.0 CTP, and then getting a book on XNA 2.0 and working with it. There are soem changes since XNA Game Studio 1.0 (aka XNA GAME STUDIO EXPRESS), so make sure u get the book for XNA GAME STUDIO 2.0. You should be able to build most 2D games easily. For 3D games you may have to learn a lot of math and other skills later on.
Hi. I'm thinking of making XNA games, hopefully making a little money, but I know absolutely NOTHING about C, C++, or C# coding. Can someone tell me what programs and applications I'll need to get a basic game running? I would like to know some things that let me do the building of characters and other content. If someone knows tutorials, please let me know.
You should learn some C# and then get a book on XNA. Some books also cover C#. You could learn C++ instead but then you are restricted to Windows games using XNA. And if you are using C++ you may as well use DirectX 9.0c or 10 instead of learning XNA. You can download Visual C# 2008 + SP1 and then download the XNA 3.0 Commercial Technology Preview (CTP). This for most purposes is identical to XNA 2.0 as far as i've seen. There are some additionals like Zune support. Get a book and go for it.
hey did u know u can make a PC game into an Xbox 360 game wid this aslong as its microsoft game (e.g. Halo) and the game dosnt even have to be for xbox 360 like crysis so u cud have tht for ur xbox
First of all, Crysis can run on DirectX 9, in addition to DirectX 10. Second, you can't update and get a whole new DirectX. You need certain graphics cards to run certain versions of DirectX. Finally, you have to make the game to put it on 360. The Halo games are coded in C++, not C# and XNA, so XNA can't port them to 360, even if you did have the source code....

xna is for making games for pc and xbox 360 so it should be real time (else i would feel cheated:P)
and i do think it should be possible using soft body physics
try the game `rigs of rods` it uses soft body physics and that damage is really good and keeps getting better and its free;)
