Some of the other bootlegs posted from this time period have him hitting the falsettos the same way as on this track so I don't think it was studio recorded. It may have been touched up or dubbed from another concert. He seemed to stop singing the falsettos later in the tour. I wonder if singing these parts caused his voice problems later on.
the falsetto parts in queen songs are excellent and its a shame freddie didn't do them live. There's not loads of them, i think if there were loads they'd lose their touch of class, but for me the falsetto in this song, particularly the first verse, and in somebody to love (studio version) is really great!
@Gregsynthbootlegs I'm agree with you. all the falseto parts werent important in the live concert but the falsetos in this song, killer queen and somebody to love were very important and the fact that Freddie didn´t at live concert never I forgive him. I always ask myself why Freddie never did the falseto in somebody to love, i think that he was in all the capacity to do it for example he did other falsetos in the magic tours very deep and powefull. do you have any reason to explain it ?
Well, quite frankly, as much as I love this version, I'm 95% sure that the vocals (including Freddie's part) are pre recorded material, that's why you've got the falsetto part that he otherwise never sang live during the 70s (and he probably could have done it). Just watch the White Queen video from that concert and it would become obvious that Freddie's lip syncing during this concert. Freddies'voice sounds almost too clean there.
Well for Rainbow, they used audio from both nights (11/19 and 11/20), and the editing was shit. There are backing vocal overdubs all over the concert, but Freddie's lead vocal wasn't altered (well it wasn't overdubbed)!
Sorry greg but I have to disagree on that one. This is not a case of bad editing like Montreal 81. His voice just does not sound "live" here. Please listen carefully at the very end of the song (3.38) when Freddie says "Thank you good night everybody !" using his "real" love voice, you can clearly tell there's a difference: his voice is rougher and deeper (nodules maybe ?) and you can't hear any studio treatment on it. Anyway those rainbow concerts would make a nice topic to debate on !
Well he didn't have the nodules yet, but what's funny is that his timbre sounds like what he did on the 11/20 songs (the three tracks I have). Freddie did sing the falsetto parts on the previous concerts (well just the "easy" and "risky" lines), but the Rainbow version has him almost acing the song!
Until we get a raw bootleg of either Rainbow concert--we have to simply guess everything. I'm willing to believe that there was some work done on his lead vocal, but I'm not 100% sure.
the best version of this song is either Japan 1974 on sheer heart attack tour or japan 1976 anato tour as he doesnt hit the falseto parts like the stuido versions where he just mearly copies the original, but he makes it his own song, and honestly, for a person whou read load of books, watches loads of films, sounds like someone who singing the song to a person as they about to die which does make the song more meaningful
@Gregsynthbootlegs still i go buy with the fact, less is more and lack of fallesto parts make the song for me, remember, i grew up on films and not music. hammersmith 75 or japan 75 or 76 are the versions for me
@Gregsynthbootlegs btw, holding notes, occastional cracks in voice, hitting lower notes rather than high notes make a song about dying/suicide more meaningful, same rule applies to BohRhap which sounds best when is sung as a ballard as opposed to an epic
Is this the best performance?

It's most likely the best version of the "full" rendition of the song!

I think that makes sense! I think simply touring too much simply tired his voice out (then caused nodules), so he stopped the falsettos!

Sadly no: I was born in 1990.

Well, I'm not sure why he didn't do the falsettos. I want to say that maybe he didn't have the confidence? I dunno!

It's like the old Montreal 1981 concert!

@Gregsynthbootlegs why

Because the falsettos "make" the song.
