This advertisement maintained an emotional reaction for me that has lasted for years. I'm not a particular fan of Lotus, or IBM, but I remembered this commercial long after it no longer aired. The very peculiar reworking of this classic tune and the different cultures with an individual saying "I am" within the masses... it's a strong message, if ironic coming from a corporation.
One of the goals of advertising is to make you remember the product. In this way, the advert did its job for me.
I wish there were a version of this commercial with the super-imposed text removed. I really like the image of these people, relatively faceless in crowds, proclaiming their existence. But when it's converted into a statement by/about lotus notes... it kind of ruins it. Oh well. :)
@TheFanfictionAddict What was nutty about what I said? I related some truth from the Bible. But in regards to your question, no, neither nut or troll, however filled with the Holy Spirit. May God bless you and yours.
This commercial is typical of the way the world is trending......globalization, setting the stage for a one world government. The "I AM" that is being used is the world's allusion to: 'I AM who I AM', what God said to Moses by the burning bush, told to us in Exodus 3:14. Also, Jesus states in John 8:58, "Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was born, I AM.” This is Hayah in Hebrew. Some think it is a form of YHWH. He who has ears to ear, let him hear.
@treyflanagan I love how the youtube comments section really brings out the nuts and the trolls. I'm not entirely sure which you are sir but, for the sake of my ability will to live in this world, you best be trollin'
In my opinion this is the greatest commercial ever made, and I am somewhat of an advertisement afficianado. It's over 10 years old now, but I still look it up on Youtube every once in a while just to watch it, and when I do I buy an old copy of R5 as a tribute to this masterpiece. It's incredibly inspirational.
I saw this commercial in the 90's with my sister, and I haven't forgotten it to this day. I don't know how things like this stick with us for years, but this one sure did.
@poolboyinla Most people think of Lotus Notes as an e-mail package, which it is. But it's a collaboration and semi-structured database platform.
R5 was the first version, released sometime in 1999, after Lotus had been bought by IBM. And this was the first version to be built on internet protocols. It really was revolutionary at the time.
So beautiful. And so simple! The most powerful teaching the world could possibly use right now. Thank you for posting this...the commercial has been on my mind for years since I first saw it. Bless.
I've been looking for this remix for like....ten years. Why, why, why can't I find this?!

I worked for Lotus when we released R5. At the time, we thought this software was revolutionary.

Does Anybody know who the band is that covered this song? I really want to know!!

I agree. It's actually a really good cover of the original The Clique song, though everyone thinks of it as an R.E.M. song.
