  • Thank you so much for sharing!

  • oh so the middle swing is reciving energy from he other two trough the middle post.

why it doesn't work for others swings that technically look the same.

  • A few thoughts:

Firstly, the so-called haunted swing was one of three, and only that one moved.

Secondly, your pendulums are mounted to a loose structure, the string they are tied to dips and bounces with every swing of the dominant penulum, transmitting the motion to the static one. How would this effect take place on a solid metal swing frame?

Thirdly, the "haunted" swing continued for at least ten days from what I have read, would resonance last that long? Also, there was no initial "push".

  • cool!

  • @zbrolyz Hi, we have no information about the 10 days period - that might easily be a folk tale. Anyhow there IS an energy input and that is the wind. It was obviously rather strong when they filmed the swing. The metal frame IS moving and might pass through energy.

  • @zbrolyz My demonstration was not about to specifically "replicate" the swing situation. It demonstrated the resonance effect in general. And it is about the parametric resonance in contrast to the swing situation that is most probably the so called non parametric resonance situation.

  • Love it.

You'd make a great ghost hunter....

  • hm but still..even this resonance have some relation in those haunted swing..the haunted one, never stops.. or only one of them wil swing.. resonance need another to help continue the swing,, its proved here if only one swing, it wil stop automatically... damn even proffesor in psyhic cant explain the haunted swing...is it really ghost or wat !!! Theres another swing in malaysia too !!

  • i know. in one of the videos, one guy goes towards the the moving swing and stops it. a few minutes later, it starts swinging again, but the other two dont move at all...kinda weird

  • No matter if the wire is thick or thin and the weight of pendulum, just the lenght of wire.

And it's not the wind that make resonance. I have made the test (with an orange and an grape), in a place free of wind, and it worked perfectly.

  • Just to be correct... My experiment here shows the "simple" resonanace and it does not have any relation to the wind. On the other hand the "hounted swing" is possibly an example for the so called parametric resonance. I could not yet simulate it with my setup. In that case a single pendulum would be enough and I have to knock either the horizontal wire or one of the chairs. Most probably that is happening.

  • woot woot woot ... sweet.

  • esa explicacion es una mierda las hamacas son 3 y se muebe 1 y esta esta en el medio

  • De acuerdo. Ademas estan suspendidas de un tubo de metal y no de un cordon flojo como en el video de este cabron

  • FANTASTIC

  • Somebody call the freakin Myth Busters already!

  • lol i will put some of these in my bedroom to scare people, thx for the idea >D (ps: this is soo fucking fake! but i like it)

  • Resonance is not responsable for the Firmat event. The metal crossbar of the swingset does not move, certainly without any substantial weight on the swing. The wind and aerodynamics of the swing are responsable, adding a little energy with every swing. In fact, just as a kid on the swing would do.

  • The swings natural frequency doesn't matter, as the wind is lateral. Resonance would be if the wind blows with the same interval as the swing's own frequency. And the wind is static here, as you can hear on the video. So no resonance effect.

  • Direction of the wind does not really matter. It moves the whole structure and that is added to the swing by resonance or parametric resonance.

Well, in fact we can not decide her. One should tell us whether the phenomenon occures if there is no wind or not.

  • The direction of the wind is the force that drives the motion, so it matters. Look at the vertical faces of the swing, they work like a sail in the wind.

Come on, without wind it doesn't move. And it's not a phenomenon, it's just a stupid swing, swinging in the wind;-)

  • I think we are on the same page. Yes, it is getting energy like the sail, but most probably the resonance effect turns it to the movement that is nearly rectangular to the wind.

  • but in that video, why is it that none of the other two move if the one in the middle does? shouldnt the other two move a little? Im sorry, but science is not my strongest subject. could u explain?

  • It depends on the actual structure. It would be rather difficult to prove it on paper as even this simple swing is a difficult system. But it is possible that the wind energy is passed to the middle swing only. It can be demonstrated on test system similar to my demonstration. By the way my demonstration shows not exactly the same effect. My one is the simple resonance and the "haunted swing" is possibley the so called parametric resonance effect.

  • can u imagine , without science knowledge, people would go for ghost swing without second thought...

    Benefit of science... haha

  • JBraden,

this experiment is only a demonstration of resonance, not a real explanation of the Firmat event, but a similar effect might appear with that crossbar as well.

Anyhow I think that there it is not simply resonance, but the so-called parametric resonance. I could not yet demonstrate that with my simple experiment tool, but stay tuned...

  • the slack in the horizontal string allows for transference of energy between the two pendulum strings, to a much greater degree than the metal crossbar on the swingset does between the swing chains

  • Omg the pendulums are haunted!

    lol
