You mean after only 6 episodes? Gainax usually has a budget for about 26 episodes per series, but they balance it so poorly so that the animation gets worse by the end of the run. So for FLCL they just came up with a story short enough that they could spend all their effort into animating just the 6 episodes. That's what I've heard.

After Evangelion there were a lot of animators and crew who had a short time between projects. Evangelion had a really heavy ending so most were just looking for something fun and short do to till the next "serious" project. And so FLCL was born. Awesome, made by some of the best, and no longer than it should be :)

@KefkaJr What? FLCL was 6 episodes by design. It's an OVA. OVA are almost always short series with high production values like this and are direct to video. This show never actually aired on Japanese television. Adult Swim was the first and I think only program to actually broadcast it.
