poor Hagler. I saw that fight and I cant blame him for being truly pxxxxx off. It was a nonesense and a great champion like Hagler deserved more respect. That verdict was a sick joke. hagler, you won it ....end of story. You were a TRUE great.
Hagler was the best middleweight ever! Sugar Ray was ans i what is wrong with boxing. All flash and no substance. Pitter patter punches should never win you a belt when the champ was never even hurt. One of the worst decisions in sports. Marvin was all class, and all business in the ring. He was the greatest
@koshdman Please no substance? SRL was getting beat up in the 1rst fight with Hearns then KO'd him in the championship rounds. Fought Duran toe to toe in the 1rst fight then fought his fight and "No Mas" should be I'm gonna get KO'd so I better quit fight. You might have some boxing knowledge but SRL is considered a GOAT by real experts.
@tellthetruthg You call SRL getting knocked down twice in the last fight, and its a draw good for boxing. The guy danced around and pitter patted his way through a career. He never hurt Hagler. Not even once. Leonord was a good boxer with little in the way of power. He waited until Hagler was older, and obviously on the downside of a fantastic career. Real experts are consumed by flash which was all that Leonard was. Hagler= the Greatest.
@koshdman Actually his last fight he quit on his stool. Hagelr didn't come close to knocking him down let alone win. I don't know why you think SRL punches didn't hurt Hagler because he sure stopped throwing after he got tagged. A fighter that wasn't getting popped and they didn't hurt would have walked through them. Hagler got backed off many times in that fight because those punches were doing damage. Watch again
@koshdman I agree Leonard didnt hurt hagler at all during the fight. In the 3rd round hagler started to come on and leonard got on his bicycle as we call it 4 the rest of the fight. Then threw flurries the last 10 sec to steal the rounds. Im old school and 2 beat the champion u have 2 damage him hurt him drop him or knock him out and leonard did none of that.....Hagler was robbed Hearns and Duran showed at least how to deal with someone like hagler!!!!
@koshdman Then you shouldn't be commenting. Leonard was MORE than a 'good' boxer. He was also only a welterweight and if Hagler had wanted him so much he would have moved down a weight and cleaned up the welter division. Pitter patted his way through a career? Uh ok, if you say so. Flash in this case simply means more punches were landed.
I watched this fight many times, and never once did any of SRL punches do any real damage. Hagler was way past his prime, and Leonard knew it when he fought him. Flash in this case only meant the guy who threw the most punches, even if they couldn't hurt a 12 year old girl.
@koshdman I understand if you are speaking emotionally but to say the punches of a guy that ko'd Hearns, Green (the perfect knock out?) and many others couldn't hurt a 12 year old girl is plain daft. Leonards punhes obviously hurt or Marvin would have merely waded through them. The rules say that the number of, not the power of the punches is what scores. BOTH MEN ARE LEGENDS.
Hagler was robbed in the Leonard bout. So was Hearns when he fought Leonard in the last bout between the two. Hearns put Leonard down twice in that bout and the best that the judges could come up with was a draw. Leonard - One guy who went very far on a gallon of gas.
Hagler was a awesome fighter. Leonard actually has a home less than a mile from where this interview took place. I see Leonard frequently in Dana Point.
Everybody knows that you don't have to KO or sit down an opponent to win a boxing bout, but apparently not this champ. He lost out to a sharper performer who landed more punches and missed less
@daveyork0 No he means, a champion should get more benefit of the doubt, hes the champion and the man to beat, Leonard came and didnt even fight for it, he just ran around for several rounds, he didnt try take it from Hagler which is what a champion should do, hes not saying yeah go toe to toe with me but like people in hometowns infront of homecrowds the champion should get more leniancy is what he is saying, which is true because i thought he won it and so did many others, even Leonard did.
Judge Jose Juan Guerra's scorecard of 118-110 in favor of Leonard against Hagler is one of the most incredible gaffes in boxing history. Even those who believe that Leonard won the fight should acknowledge that such a scorecard was an embarrassing insult to the sport.
@pnutbutrncrackers When first I saw the fight I thought 118-110 was OK. Like the commentator said, Hagler was missing punches even when Leonard wasn't trying to duck! An indication that it wasn't the Hagler of old, as his timing used to be immaculate. That said, each time I watch the replays, yeah it was closer. Leonard's flashiness stood out because Hagler wasn't himself - but like myself I think the judge was conned by that too. Hagler started to slow & should have fought 15 rounds southpaw.
Thers a common error of thought that makes fighters think the other fighter shouldnt utilize his talents such as speed & movement. Them fighters call any kind of movement 'running' but there are diffrent types of running. We all know that Leonard gave credit and admiration to his oponents -HearnsDuran. Marvin should do the same now that he isn't fighting anymore & recognize that he was in with a great fighter like himself in a close fight! There is such a thing as having not done enough to win.
Duran was past his prime. Fighting at Hagler's weight division during Hagler's prime, fighting what they called the best middle weight. Had they fought at 145 Duran would have won. I would have loved to see if there was any boxer past his prime who would have come from feather division and given Duran a fight at his prime when he was the king of the light weight division. I would have scored it a draw.

Hagler was not the greatest boxer or slugger however he was tough as hell mind you yes he beat duran not the duran of the 70s it was an older slower duran who still went the distance. Leonard was a carefully cared for fighter. hagler in 1980 probobly would have knocked out leonard
@fischparov I didn't say the he was the greatest boxer but certainly one of the greatest boxers, he was a superb boxer puncher, what made hagler stand out from the rest was his toughness and versatility he could do it all box, move, slug, punch, bang, or just plain fight he is probably one of the most underrated fighters ever and without a doubt the greatest MW of all time and one of the all time greatest fighters period.
Hagler beat them all leonard included even when he was obviously well past his prime, he clearly beat duran decisively I don't know what fight some of the sports announcers were watching, al bernstein was the only one calling that fight right when he said hagler was completely outboxing the percieved boxer in duran, hagler punished duran in that fight , duran never asked for a rematch he asked for a rematch with almost everyone else but not hagler even when asked he chose not to answer because
he didnt ever want to see hagler again, duran took a quiet beating in that fight. The leonard fight was a farce, hagler won even though he was only about 70% of his best, the hagler who fought leonard was well past his peak that was obvious to anyone who followed haglers career, hagler was the greatest MW the sport has ever seen and one of the most skilled, versatile, and tough fighters the game has ever seen.
He's very proud and doesn't want to admit it. Ironically, what Hagler says near 6:50, it is Leonard who has the right to say it: deep inside, and despite all the running and the "hiding", Leonard knows that he whooped Hagler.
@ezekielwahwah lol. when he mentioned leonard admitted to him privately that he beat him. leonard must of told him that (if he ever did) to get hagler off his back, and maybe so when hagler died it would be peacefully. lol.
