  • I remember clearly where I was watching this series when it happened. I was 9 years old and on my grandma's bed watching it.

  • I love seeing clips like this. MLB can be dicks about people posting MLB footage, but they don't do anything with 98% of the footage they own. They rarely show full games anymore on MLB network, they cut them down to one hour blocks so that they have more time for their thousands of clip shows that show basically the same stuff over and over.

I'm not a Phillies fan, but I love being able to see Harry Kalas, I just wish there were a lot more clips like this on Youtube.

  • I remember back in the day every once in ahwile during an extra innings game Richie would get hungry and say on live TV if the staff of Celebre's pizza in listening to this i would like a pizza. 15 minutes later a pizza would arrive at the broadcast booth. Richie was asked to stop calling for pizza on air. He was allowed to do birthday wishes. One day he said "i'd like to send out a special birthday wish to the celebre's twins, Plain and pepperoni! We will be right back after this comercialbreak

  • Harry Kalas has so much in his voice. I would not think it is the same without him. I don't really like watching baseball cause it is kinda slow to me but my Brother watched every game and so did my x husband and I became accustomed to the voice and it is sad to know he won't be heard anymore. Kind of special memory to me the sound of his voice.

  • Wow. Two icons of Phils baseball broadcasting. RIP to both Harry and Whitey.

  • This is really cool, the Harry the K closing upload is great too. There's a video with Andy Musser where he shows his Phillies' 1980 ring on allthesebeers' channel.

  • What a pleasure watching Harry Kalas and Richie Ashburn talking baseball together. They were so comfortable together. They made us feel comfortable listening to them.

  • RolloSmokes my msn in profile! WPHL-TV - Phillies baseball opening - Oct. 12, 1980

  • I went looking for highlights of this game b/c right now on MLB network they are doing their show that will choose the 20 greatest all time games. I know this has to be there for 1980's decade. Some historians still refer to this series as the best playoff series ever in baseball.

  • Two of the voices of my childhood. I miss these guys.

  • I can only imagine how goosebump-inducing a Kalas call of Halladay's no-no last night would have been.

  • I miss these guys dearly, just as I miss my dad who went to join them in heaven last April. As a lifelong Phillies fan, it's oddly comforting to imagine my father watching the current heroics of Ryan, Chase, J. Roll, Placido, Jason, Shane, Raul, Chooch, Cole, Doc Hallyday, Roy O., Domonic, and the rest of our amazing team from up above -- cloud-side -- with Harry + Whitey . . .

  • I always thought that was the dumbest rule ever. Not allowing your teams announcers to broadcast their games in the World Series. Just stupid. Thank god Harry got to broadcast a series and the Phillies won it before his untimely passing in 2009. I'm a Reds fan and it would have pained me not to be able to have heard Marty and Joe call the games on the radio.

  • WOw,,,,shed a tear...thanx for this...

  • RIP Harry Kalas,Richie Ashburn & Andy Musser, we miss you all!

  • @saml760 - Andy Musser is alive and well as of October 2011.

  • Phillies Fans.

Check out the "Phiilies Dream Scene" on Youtube -

Type "Phillies Dream Scene" into your search bar.

  • Has anyone got a copy of the Larry Bowa-Dallas Green meltdown against the Braves on Aug 24 1981?.

  • Man, that Gino's promo brings back the memories!

  • @jfayiii - Gino's is back, and just celebrated their first anniversary in October 2011 under the same Gino Marchetti leadership. They started in King of Prussia, their former corporate hometown, and in the first year, opened stores in Towson, MD as well as Bensalem. They're still expanding, too. However, their cheapest burger is now north of $4.

  • Gino's! lol

  • Whitey's baseball instincts were right on....predicting what kind of game would be game 5.

  • Good God almighty that takes me back! Girard Bank, are you kidding me?! Bless you,Rollosmokes. Thanx 4 the post and Safe Journey to Whitey Ashburn and Harry the K

  • RIP Harry Kalas and Richie Ashburn

  • baseball will never be the same in philly without whitey and harry the k !!!!!!!

  • I'm just curious, why was WPHL-17 allowed to have a local broadcast? I thought local coverage of playoff games wasn't allowed by MLB back then?

    RIP Harry Kalas (1936-2009)

  • The rules changed after the 1983 season.

  • wasnt that just for the world series where there wasnt any local broadcast?

  • This was a heartbreaker. Houston was 6 outs away from the World Series, before everything fell apart. Who know there'd be a 25-year wait for the Astros to finally get there, after this disaster?

  • Philly misses and loves you Whitey and Harry!

    RIP

  • (The Late) Sportscaster Harry Kalas did his job quite professionally as a Phillies Commentator!! Here's To Him!! I salute you!! Rest In Peace -- Harry Kalas!! A Brilliant 6!!

  • God bless Whitey...I love how Harry wants to pull the mic away on several occasions but keeps it in front of Richie so he can continue to ramble on

  • I remember that I was at the Valley Forge Music Fair with my parents during this historical game. When we arrived home, I was able to see the last two or three innings. Do you remember the Greg Gross bunt?

  • Dear Harry and Whitey,

Please send down a blessing for our Phillies and help them beat the Dodgers again!

    God bless you guys!

(It aint the same without you)

  • Wow. 29 years. (10/12/09)

  • I LOVE THIS!!! where can i get game play action of this series?? RIP HK & WHITEY

  • It warms my heart just to see Harry & Whitey in the booth in the old days. This very game was just re-broadcast on MLB network TODAY!!!. I haven't seen this game since I watched this very broadcast in 1980 when I was 6 years old. The 8th inning of this game is one of the most riveting innings of baseball in Phillies history. They showed the ABC feed of this game on MLB, and Howard Cossell gushed over what an incredible series it was. GO PHILS!!!!!.

  • Thanks for the memories. I was 11 years old in '80. Good times.

  • Rest in Peace Harry Kalas, that's coming from a cardinals fan.

  • Thanks for posting mainly becasue I never saw the opening. I don't know why they didn't show the opening on the 25th anniversary DVD.

  • i was 9 for this game and remember watching games on channel 17,this brings back memeories, lol, thanks

  • thanks for posting this rollo, i wish i could have been alive to see this live, but its still amazing to hear whitey and harry - it means a lot to philadelphians who listened to them every game. love that intro jam too!

  • R.I.P. WHITEY & HARRY THE K, two of the best !

  • bell of pennsylvania! we wrote the book!

  • awesome........thanks.....

  • This is the second greatest live broadcast of Harry's career (after the World Championship in 2008), and definitely #1 with Harry and Whitey. This is Harry in his prime.

Comcast Sportsnet used to broadcast this whole game with Harry's call. Try to get your hands on this if you can. Damn, I wish Comcast would rebroadcast this every once in a while...

  • RIP whitey and RIP harry

  • Toughest loss ever for my Astros.#$^&#@*

  • Classic. The intro would lead to one of the great playoff games in MLB history. The Phils-Astros game 5 is so underated.

  • RIP WHITEY RIP HARRY

  • At time index 00:33 it sounds like Keith Jackson from the ABC Sports broadcast of the game leaks in for about a second. Cool stuff regardless.

  • WPHL 17 PhilaDELphia. Great stuff

  • Yep...so remember that as a kid! I used to say the city name that way because of that announcer...

  • thanks rollo! this is a gem to see harry and rich again! I was 9 during this NLCS...brings back sooooooo many memories! Tastykake breaks, Frank's Soda, Girard Bank...

  • Comment removed

  • I was 16 during this LCS, which was the greatest 5-game LCS of all time.

I remember having a "George" card from Girard Bank - the predecessor of the MAC (now STAR) ATM card.

To this day, "nobody bakes a cake as tasty as a Tastykake."

Is it Frank's? Thanks! (for many years, I had an old Frank's soda machine)

Everybody went to Gino's, because Gino's was the place to go! They were the only place in the Philly area to get Kentucky Fried Chicken, and they had great burgers in their own right.

  • For a pre 1985 LCS full 5 game playoff only the '76 Royals-Yankees and maybe '72 A's-Tigers comes close. I agree this is the best LCS pre 1985 (that year it went to current 4 out of 7 games format)and still about 30 years later one of the best ever.

This series is so underrated among the best post season history. Even Howard Cossell called this classic the best post season he ever broadcasted in person and he was also at the historic 1977 Reggie Jackson 3 homer WS game as well.

  • I forgot (also was limited by YouTube's 500-character limit) - on the back of Tastykake trucks were bumper stickers that said, "This Truck Equipped With Tasty Breaks".

Some of the older Tastykake trucks still have those stickers.

  • What a classic clip, thanks for the post and the memories!!!

  • where are you getting these? Did you have a vcr in 75 and 80???

    great stuff!

  • if you buy the 1980 world series box set, you get the entire game five of the NLCS championship produced by Channel 17. I have it, it's great! You can get it off the phillies website or at CBP...

  • Thanks for the info! Too exciting to wach...

  • great.. thanks for posting.. its amazing seeing that wphl bumper after 28 years.. brings back the same emotions.. and the sponsors - lol - gino's. remember them?

  • one correction on your intro comments, Rollo. The Phillies broadcasters were not allowed to broadcast the World Series back then--even on radio. Harry and Richie had to watch the '80 WS with the rest of us. Some years later, Harry reenacted the final out but he did not make the call of Tug's strikeout of Willie Wilson live. He was never able to broadcast live that "The Phillies are World Champions of baseball!" until this past October.

  • If you read closely, you'll see that I did mention the word "simulcast" in my blurb.

My earliest memories watching baseball on TV go back to 1981. I remember ABC's coverage of the Yankees-Dodgers World Series that year also being aired over WPIX. Their announcers (Rizzuto, Messer, White) did a brief pre-game before tossing it over to the ABC team. Two stations broadcasting the same feed -- that's a simulcast.

I hadn't known that local radio was blacked-out, but it all changed in '84.

  • @doug3esq I remember listening to harry and rich do the world series..Im almost certain of it..

  • @doug3esq it actually wasnt some years later but immediately afterward. For Christmas in 1980 I got a record of the 1980 Phillies audio highlights sold thru Kiddie City. Harry narrated and it had radio clips from thru-out the season on side 1 and then the NLCS radio highlights and the WS re-enactment followed by parade clips on side 2. I dont know know where the record is now but I still look in my moms basement everytime I'm home.

  • excellent. Brings back memories of watching the Phils on channel 17.
