i currently have this film out on loan from the new york public library and watched it for the first time last night. i dug it, but wonder if one, or two, of the scenes, especially the one of her kissing her dog, may have been cut short for american video audiences. has anyone out there heard about this?
Take my word for it, this film is a big pile of shit. If you're looking for what this film promises (but completely fails to deliver), go watch Naissance des pieuvres. But in my opinion even that film fails to be a convincing portrayal of girls going through adolescence.

i'm not limiting anyones point of view here. this movie is fucked up, whether it is brilliant and had to go to extremes to prove a point or not. this movie is messed up. it doesn't deal with light subject matter and it doesn't dance around it either. it's out there right in your face. it should at least be warned to people.
i think it's less about fetish / shock value and more about how sexuality can emerge in young girls (within the context of how society/family views and talks about it)... i mean, i really don't think that puberty is a fairytale "blossoming into womanhood".. it can be/feel dirty and twisted :) breillat understood that.
This movie is messed up, i stumbled upon it on Showcase one day and it's actually one of the most shocking movies i have ever come across. It's borderline fetish pornography, intriguing yet i never saw a point to the story. I guess that's why it was banned for so long.
