I've got the HV40 which is the latest version but not much different to this. I've been out filming today with it and will try and get some footage on my channel soon. I'm waiting for my Premiere CS4 to arrive. you can't go wrong with tape (Mini DV) i nearly fell into the trap of buying an AVCHD camera until I read of the problems with needing a supersonic PC.

Tape based cameras are a lot better for independent filmmakers because it has better quality (less compression) and they are extremely compatible with a variety of hardware and software.

"How many DV-Tapes would that take?" would take two tapes for two hours on sp and one and a half on lp mode. mini dv can also be re-used and at 15-30USD for a pack of five good quality tapes(five hours sp or 7.5 hours lp total ) mini dv tapes beat the shit out of shhc cards.

its digital tape. dv tapes are way better than hdd cams. say your out filming on vacation with a hdd cam with out a computer and you run out of memory what are you doing to do? with a dv cam you can just switch the tape. also most hdd cams compress the video lowering the quality mini dv tapes are recorded in raw info so there is 0 quality loss

anyway, I digress. tape is easier, yeah maybe technically avchd has a higher quality, but you're not really going to be able to tell except on a 40"+ display. Also, the hard drive, while nice, if you think about it one jog at the wrong time and there it goes, it's scratched and all your data is lost. I personally still prefer tape.

Also, I would definitely get an hf s10 over the hv30, except for the cost which is double. Flash based cams are awesome, I just think the idea of a regular hard drive in a camera is stupid because of how easily it could be damaged and considering it's irreplaceable that's a risk.

No it's not the same thing. MiniDV tapes don't have any compression. Hard drive ones have AVCHD compression, so you loose video quality.

I remember the day when I got my HV30, I was still at work when I got a call that my package had arrived, so I snuck off to the postoffice to pick it up. I still had a few hours left of the workday so I left the package in the car and decided to open it when I got home. But whadda ya know.. a few minutes later I was unboxing the HV30 in my car. :P I just couldn't help myself. I regret it a bit now though, would've liked to make an unboxing video myself..
