@patti0311 It is the classic Chinese we call ' 文言' when we learn the second level Chinese language. ' 文言' was taught to us so that we can enjoy the thousands years of Chinese literature treasures. This is similar to studying the Chaucer old English or for laymans to understand , loosely, the old ' Shakespearean English' , an absolutely non-tecnical , made-up term of course :).

@lwc888 Considering the wide-spread Chinese education of ' pinyin' plus 'simplified ' words & use of ' white words' 白字( My teacher would fail me if he found more than 1 white word in my Chinese composition (essay)  , this will be 'classic' enough, if not TOO 'classic' for this NEW generation of Chinese kids . Of course, it is not ' 文言' enough for you nor me :) .

@djosephlee While I studied Chaucer about a hundred years ago :) in first year university's English Literature course), he gave me the impression of a brilliant scholar with little recognition by ordinary people. Everybody knows about Shakespeare, though a lot of researcher don't even think he is the writer of his plays, but a mere producer who bought them . You can easily find out more about Chaucer's old English from internet search.
