It's not a bad game....I've got the saturn version, which is nice looking...wouldn't mind picking it up on the Megadrive (jap version though) :) excellent review Mark :)
@lawnboyspost1975 I played it on the master system as I was intregued by it running on an 8bit system and was blown away by how playable it actually is on the MS. Ended up playing it all throughout the afternoon
I remember the first time I saw this in the arcade and my jaw hit the floor, I still find the graphics in this game amazing! I had this on the Master System and it was one of my fav games on the system, I still prefer it to the Megadrive version. Great video!
@markvergeer Lock onto as much enemies as possible before letting go the homing missiles, this boost the score, and when you reach a check point, you get the acumulated points added to what you had left. So the more enemies linked together, the more extra time. Hope this helps. I finished the game 3 times on the Saturn :-D Usually i end op dieíng on the last stage, before you get to play the final "bonus" stage.
@markvergeer Youre welcome. Oh, and before i forget, it's important to shoot as much enemies as possible, even if they won't link, try to kill them. As also enemies that get killed one by one gives score, and the score will be converted to more time. This techniqe should help you trough the first 3 or 4 stages adding more score to your time. The final 3 will slowly deplete the time, but the more you have left for the bonus round, the more chance you have to finish the game :-D
@SteveBenway Hi Steve, i allready said this to markvergeer too, but here goes: Lock onto as much enemies as possible before letting go the homing missiles, this boost the score, and when you reach a check point, you get the acumulated points added to what you had left. So the more enemies linked together, the more extra time. Hope this helps.
I ended the game 3 times, and played the Saturn version. I never played this arcade version.
I used to spend a lot of money in the arcade playing this. It was mounted on a special platform and the chair and monitor would tilt, and turn and such. Flippin' awesome! Really nice cockpit feel.
It's kind of amazing how bad the first polygon based games looked compared to this (think Virtua Fighter for example). You would think people would have preferred the more detailed look of something like GF2 over a entire person made up of 12 polygons, but I remember seeing Virtua Fighter for the first time and the novelty of something actually being 3d made me able to completely overlook the lack of detail. If not for the novelty factor I think sprite-based games would have been around longer
@mingtongzhi I see where you are coming from. I reckon 3D polygons were 'new' and were perceived to be more advanced than the sprite scaling that was pretty much present everywhere in the arcades, the pc and the consoles. I reckon that the games like Doom and Duke Nuke'm 3D where both techniques were used simultaneously that the 'sprite-type' graphics were perceived as old-fashioned and an inferior technique resulting in all polygon games like Virtua Fighter and Quake for example.
They day I sat in that chair and spun around shooting those beautiful sprites blew my young mind forever! This and Railchase are so impressive to this day.
@AceEbb77 Amazing how those games can make such a lasting impression. Wouldn't mind owing a machine like this but the question are: how to pay for it, and where to put it as these machines were HUGE! :)
@KieranD212 I think I would go for the Saturn or the FM-Towns port - which runs very good on a more modern II machine than the bog standard 386 FM Towns (Marty?). The Saturn is more accessible.
If you have access to a Japanese Playstation I would definitely go for the HD edition on the PS2 as that is an AMAZING version.
If this is the REAL arcade versions, then i'm amazed how well the Saturn did at this! I got it on Saturn, and it looks really close, exept for some sprite flicker when to much is happening on screen at once! This is indeed the most impressive and immersive sprite scaling schooter i've ever played! Nothing comes close to those wide open surroundings, and then flying into a cave/plannet. I feel like hooking up the Saturn to the big TV now! LOL.
@musicmaniac1965 The Saturn does a good job. The framerate is much lower than the arcade which blasts at at least 60fps but it does feature almost all the arcade elements.
I've never seen this game before..you can tell it uses elements from Afterburner, Outrun, etc. I'm going to have to keep an eye opened for this game. Pretty impressive!
@willgraham13 Thanks. Techniques used in the game engines are very similar to OutRun, Afterburner and Space Harrier. All had über smooth sprite scaling. Rad Racer is also another amazing 3D sprite scaling arcade game.
Get the Saturn or the PS2 (Jap) versions of the game if possible as they are very good.
@MustNotRead I know. I felt the same when I first saw this. The sheer speed of the graphics and the way the cab worked made me want to play it. Outrun had a similar effect on my as did Space Harrier.
Was there ever a Galaxy Force I?

Such an incredible looking game. I never managed to figure out how to boost the energy though, so it always seemed to end too soon.
SteveBenway 1 month ago
@SteveBenway Same here, that kind of ruins the game a little as the energy does seem to go down rather quickly. Don't know what the trick is here.
