You bring up a good point. Antisemitism was not a new concept, especially during the early 20th Century. Yet I think the reason why the Holocaust stands out so much is because it was so industrialized, inhuman, and efficient. Also the fact that this was racial antisemitism makes it more rigid because, unlike religious antisemitism, you cannot change your heritage or ethnicity.

The 'warning from history' the programme's makers are trying to get across is that if Nazism could happen in a country as cultured as Germany was in the 1930's, with it's proud traditions in art, literature and science, then it can happen anywhere, so the rest of us shouldn't be too smug. I watched this series when it first showed on the BBC, I found it very informative, I got into the series to the point of the Nazis putting the jews into the warsaw Ghetto. a little was shown here of the children dying in the streets. This was more then I could bear and I have to admit to bursting out crying at something I could do nothing about. None the less a very important programme if you have more stomach then me. The 'warning from history' the programme's makers are trying to get across is that if Nazism could happen in a country as cultured as Germany was in the 1930's, with it's proud traditions in art, literature and science, then it can happen anywhere, so the rest of us shouldn't be too smug. The propaganda the Nazis used was very sophisticated and played on existing prejudice toward Jews which had existed throughout the Middle Ages. Watch out! The internet is a very effective modern propaganda tool

I watched this series when it first showed on the BBC, I found it very informative, I got into the series to the point of the Nazis putting the jews into the warsaw Ghetto. a little was shown here of the children dying in the streets. This was more then I could bear and I have to admit to bursting out crying at something I could do nothing about. None the less a very important programme if you have more stomach then me. I thank god I never had to grow up in these barbaric years.

The German people were not really as oppressed by Hitler as you might believe. Past polls show that many Germans considered the 30's to be a wonderful, prosperous time. Hitler ruined his own legacy, and how he is portrayed in history books, by his warmongering and obsessive empire goals.
This is obviously not counting the Jews he sought to remove from Germany (initially by deportation). Aside from that minority, Germans were better off under Hitler than the Communists for sure.

Heydrich was his superior (killed in '42) and according to records of high official meetings at Wannsee, Heydrich acted on the Fuhrer's orders. I believe Hitler was the Fuhrer.

They got into power because of the reasons detailed in this programme. Stalin's crimes have been detailed elsewhere and have no place in a series about the Nazis.

The Holodomor, Stalin's genocide attempt of The Ukraine that killed 7 million in one year, has been swept under the rug and we (USA) are one of only TEN countries worldwide that recognize it as genocide. @powermad81 The triumph of Germany on the eastern front had much to do with the nature of Czarist Russia. In the west Germany was confronted with far more industrialised societies who could fight a modern war. You base your views on the end of WWI on a book by an anti semitic crank like Henry Ford ? @powermad81 It was a combination of military defeat and the immense social and economic pressure that four years of blockade had put upon German socety that caused the German collapse in Nov 1918 not the Jews. Don't forget all of Germanys allies had been knocked out of the war or were on the point of collapse.

@powermad81 Germany wasn't "stabbed in the back " she was defeated on the battlefield. Between March and July 1918 Germany had suffered nearly a million casualties in a series of offensives on the western front including 239000 casualties in the three weeks of Operation Michael. After that the German army was a spent force.

this doc does a good job and goes some way to describing why germany was radicalised after ww1. It does not go into that much detail nor can it in one short documentry. but if we take it as a entry level it is a good effort.
