  • but why beethoven. why not a french musician like Debussy or Chausson or Franck

  • largely unmixed, in contrast to the highly blended flesh one sees in a davinci or titian portrait. to those habituated to the former, manet's bright and vivid flesh, harsh and/or crudely juxtaposed half-tones, combined with contemporary subject matter sometimes controversial in and of itself, served to have history ally him with the impressionist although he might have balked at this, given his overwhelming desire to be accepted by the mainstream salon. provocateur, yes. outsider, no.

  • manet's departure from academicism mainly resides in his use of half-tones. an example of academicism would be the venetian method of painting flesh in regard to the cool turning of tones in the flesh with respect to a light source and the flesh's corresponding warm tones--these generally proceeded from sienna or umber bases and the half-tones were blended thusly. manet's significant departure from this which supposedly put him in the school of impressionist was to, in general, use the paint

  • Cool, i loved manet when i was in art school, he's a favorite.

  • AND, to begin with, I was informing FreeDrtz that Manet's lack of attention to detail and such was intentional, and maybe I didn't feel like writing a 6 page explanation of Manet's identity and involvement in the art world. He's not on the same level as Monet or Renoir, DUH, FINE, GREAT. GUESS WHAT...I KNOW!!!!! GET A JOB.

  • It's a nice, oaky Chardonnay.

I'm happy to see your interests and hobbies include"not worrying".

Take a deep breathe. I never derided anyone who believes Manet was an Impressionist. I said I had not warmed to that notion and gave the reasons why. Respectfully.

I agree with you that the most odious people on Earth are infallible snobs. Therefore I humbly apologize for disagreeing with your, obviously, greater erudition and command of the Realm of Art.

  • If any of you think that Manet wasn't an Impressionist thats great but don't comment just for the sake of making yourself feel smart. "He wasn't a strict academic painter" implies that maybe he did use some academic approach but not entirely. THANK YOU! And, MOST of the Impressionists considered Manet their leader. FACT. END OF STORY. So don't come at me with this "Oh I cant believe you think Manet was an Impressionist, you silly ignorant boy taahaa! *sips wine*" Pretentious assholes!

  • hmmmm he wasn't a very good painter, was he?

  • he was an impressionist; he wasn't a strict academic painter. he and the impressionists sought to depict the fleeting effects of light on everyday events (and taboo subjects like poverty or alcoholism), hence his loose brushstroke and disregard for perspective.

  • Well, you can't really say he was an Impressionist. He just hung out with them He never did a true impressionist work.

  • Ehh, thats true. He's actually my least fav of the group, and he was mostly inspired by the younger kids. As an avante-garde artist I think hes great, but as an Impressionist...hes alright. My fav is DEGAS, and I love what Renoir did in Algeria! <3

  • I've never warmed to the concept that he was an impressionist.

He NEVER painted "en plein aire".... and I respectfully disagree, there is an element of the "academic" painter about him....... Posed. Considered. Premeditated.

Olympia is NOT an impressionist painting. Nor the Glass of Absinthe. Nor most of them...... more like Franz Hals he is. No one would DREAM of calling Franz Hals an impressionist.

  • Yes thank you, I'm aware that there are elements of academic painting in his style, and some of those elements can also be found in Cassatt's work. What I was implying is that while his approach was strongly academic he let his foreshortening and lighting slide (THE ABSINTHE DRINKER, notice the legs, and the shadow from the bottle; the figure in the background of Dejeuner sur l'Herbe should be smaller) so judging from those he isn't a STRICT ACADEMIC PAINTER. Jesus Fucking Christ!

  • If you look at my comment you will see the word "respectfully".

Perhaps I am deluded, but I thought the purpose of comments is to share one's own opinion. I did so .......

    Respectfully.

In return, I receive vulgar vituperation.

And, by the way, I never called him a STRICT ACADEMIC PAINTER. I said there were "academic" elements about him ( note the quotation marks...)

    Grow Up.
