I wish i knew What this guy was talking about you always use you 3 back fingers for power and the control the stick thein with the three fingers is TOTALY wrong......Maybe in britain but not on Drumming LOL pls dont listen what this guy is saying and look up DrumCore stuff you will not be very good and your rolls sound like a accent tap excersise LOL never take you fingers off the stick that much LOL sry guy im not hating im just correcting
if you practice your rolls the way this guy is trying to teach you....your rolls will actually get WORSE...and your doing way too much extra work than you need to and can ultimately lead to damaging your wrists...
Its rly common and many drummers use it... still i n to say that u should practise it a lil different. what u actually should do is one stroke with ur wrist lettin the stick rebound and then one stroke with ur fingers while bringing ur wrists in the upper position. So whats shown here is not completely correct in my opinion...still DrJoy does correctly at speed...strange thing...^^
Who the hell plays like this? Flyback, snap, accent the snap? Just practice right right left left, and paradiddles and you'll be able to get 500+ BPM. PRACTICE PRACTICE, there's no tricks just practice. NICE TD9 kit though
@railfreek for a starter, you show me a video of you playing singles at 500+bpm and i will personally suck your cock, Secondly this guys technique. although he has an awkward way of describing the motions (no offense DrJoy, keep at it) his technique is the most efficient way of playing doubles.

@railfreek: you idiot, first of all he very well explains the snap-up technique which you need to play all the rudiments and second, this is a TD-8 kit.
ARE U FUCKIN JOKIN IM A PERCUSSIONIST IM 14 and IM GREAT UR TECHNIQUE IS FUCKIN GROSS IF U SHOWED THT TOO A SNARE PLAYER LIKE ME UD GET HIT AND UR STILL SLOPPY
Very nice lesson, Dr. Joy. You are very precise and clear in your instructions. That seems to be lacking from an aweful lot of music lesson videos on YouTube.
I've been having trouble with speeding up my rudiments, and now I know why. You don't simply just rebound. I just have one question though... You do this same technique to speed up double strokes in general, right? Just minus the accent part? I was mainly trying to improve my double strokes. Not onto rolls yet.
You're almost correct. I do use this same technique to speed up the double strokes, but I keep pushing for the accents. This way the second note doesn't die away or get overwhelmed by the first stroke.
ok well like im just starting to learn how to play the drums well i have been for about a month and my left hand is always ALOT slower than my right and no matter how hard i pratice my left hand isnt as fast as my right is there any exersies that can help?
Get a book called 'Stick Control' by George B. Stone. Message me for a couple of links that are related to it.
PS: I think that Dr. Joy has retired from giving YT lessons. He was good while he was around, though. But like some of the great rock bands such as The Police and The Smiths, YT drum teachers retire early.
this has nothing to do with the video although it is am good one.
big dog i noticed you had a big dog hi hat pedal and i was thnking of getting a double bass pedal of the same make. ive heard they are like DW but just cheaper and i wondered generall what the pedal itself was like, currently i use mapex and i find the pedal to thin
I've been using a DW7000 single kick pedal for the last three years on my Roland kit and have to say that it's one of the worst pedals I've ever played....I much prefer my Pearl single pedal.....
you have the same practice pad as me! ace! hahaha but yeah awesome video lesson man hopefully loads of drummers'll see it and we;ll have some better more controlled fills and vids about instead of this bouncy open handed crap thats flying around. have you seen jojo meyers DVD btw? cos you're saying pretty much exactly the same thing as him which is a pretty sure sign you're right lol
