@NuxingFutz That was Peter Dumbreck. Webber went in qualifying and morning warm up. i actually saw the accident as I was about 100 yeards from it. After the 2 Webber flips Merc installed small winglets on the front of the car. One was knocked off on the previous lap and the draft from the Toyota interrupted the airflow and caused the flip. the Mercedes had been porpoising all through practice but looked better during the race until the accident
I have never seen the full footage of the camera view facing back from Indianapolis....from the shakiness of the camera I imagine the cameraman was filming the cars cresting round that corner. Has anybody else got the whole footage of this? It always seems to be this awkward switch between the views during the crash. I bet the aforementioned clip would be really interesting, to see the car leave the ground from a forward facing position.
Take me down. That car is all down force. Thats why it's so lolw. What happened was the car went up the hill and because of air resistance the cars front end lifted and flipped!
YOu do know that is not the CLK-GTR right? It's the Mercedes CLR. Different are all together. GReat clip though. I watched that race when I was little.
After lifting from the ground the car's shape weight transfers backward which which lifts the front slightly and reduces front end down-force. The car essentially becomes a air foil and flies.
I wonder why nobody has posted the Mark Webber "flight of fancy"? From what I can remember, it was almost identical to this one, only I think Webber flew even higher.
I remember watching that race and seeing that crash. I was telling someone about it recently but they didn't believe me. I will forward them the link.
Thanks for sharing a bit of race history. If I remember correctly it was one of the fastest cars on the track for the first 2 hours of the race before they withdrew after that accident.
I heard that it got air under it because of going over the crest of a slight hill that slightly changed the distance between the front spoiler & the ground to more than the tolerances would allow. This is only the difference of a few cm's but that was all it took to cause the air to change from down force to lift. This isn't an SUV this cars suspension is so stiff that if the right rear tire went flat the front left tire wouldn't touch the ground. A couple cm's is a big deal.
he got behind the toyota, the less dense; more turbulent air got under the car, as soon as the nose is raised the air pressure on the back wing rotates the car into a flip. lucky the guy lived
CLK GTR was the first iteration used in FIA GT in 1997 and early 1998, CLK LM was used at Le Mans at FIA GT in late 1998. The CLR was used only for this race.
This is real, It happend during the 24 race at Lemans in 1999. Mark Webber was a team driver who fliped during the morning warmup. Mercedes tried some last minute adjustments with little flaps on the front of the car. After less than two hours into the race, Mercedes withdrew from the race after this accident.
It is real, and there's a perfect explenation for it. Air got caught up underneath the car, and due to the cars speed, the air lifted the car much like an airplane. Thankfully the driver was unhurt.
how is this fake u fucking fag get ur facts straight the car was doing about 400 km/h and the air got up under the car. the downforce wasnt sufficient to hold the car down therefore it flipped. u fucking hippie fag. dont ever comment on youtube!!!!!!

No downforce at the front.

THe car has tons of downforce! What happened was the air resistance lifted the front end of the car up after it got at the top of the hill!
Navohk 2 years ago
So it has no downforce. How do you call it then?
TakeMeDown2FunkyT0wn 2 years ago
I guess that could be avoided by allowing venturi tunnels, like the BT46 had.

Le mans 24 HR 1999

Team mate Mark webber flipped in practice AND in pre race warmup, unhurt.
Mercedes CLR - Aerodynamic fault, stopped racing them after this.

i heard it was something having to do with slip stream, he either go in or out of it, and air gets thrown under the car
dumbCrakers 3 years ago
it was a miscalculation on aerodynamics the reason the clr took off was cause of the tubulent air got under the clr and lifed the nose and took off

not enough down force in the front and with the huge engine in the back, the front took off.
Triple88a 3 years ago 2
holy shit.
how did that happen?
Blacklist94 4 years ago
air gets under the car and it goes up
sidewalk4004 4 years ago
what do you mean?
like is it cause of the speed that caused air going under the car, lifting it up?
Blacklist94 4 years ago
Well yes I guess. Probably a problem with the setup, but yes thats basicly it. There was just too much air directed under it.
sidewalk4004 4 years ago
OK.
Blacklist94 4 years ago
@Blacklist94
the car lost a front canard and that cause a loss of front downforce.
