  • Shake it like a Polaroid picture!

  • Will the shaker not grab the tree at the base and shake the whole tree?

  • You probably should expose the root flares more at the bottum. My grandfather got almost twice the yeild by simply un covering the root flares of his pecans.

  • How much money can you make with a pecan orchard? I know pecans are pretty expensive and i get quite a few off of 1 tree in my back yard. I eat them though. Pecans are my favorite nut.

  • Is the shaking to get the pecans to fall off or to stimulate the tree to produce more pecans? I had heard that giving your trees a good whacking all over with a rolled up newspaper helps stimulate sap production, which can make the tree leafier and more productive. Sounds crazy, I know, but I tried it on a curly leaf willow in my backyard, and it was extremely leafy the following spring. Go figure.

  • The shaking is to harvest the pecans. Pecans naturally grow in a sheath and then the sheath opens up and the pecan would naturally fall out. When we shake the tree most of the pecans are in the open sheath and would fall out eventually, but there would be more of a chance of squirrels eating them or the nuts getting moldy or diseased or something else that could ruin the nuts.

  • Thanks for the info. I don't know from Pecan trees. Here in Oregon we have English walnuts and lots of filbert (also called Hazelnuts) trees - I don't know how they get them off the tree out here - I see a lot on the ground maybe they fall off when they're ready. :)

  • i live in Arkansas, we have black walnuts, pecans, and hickory nuts everywhere. They are all the same. They all fall and if you shake the tree more will fall it's the same with most fruit trees as well.

  • How many pounds do you get from a tree that size?

  • This year I think we averaged about 175 pounds of in-the-shell-pecans from each tree (plus or minus 15 pounds).

But this year was an exceptionally great pecan year for Georgia. Last year (which was a bad year) we only got 1/5th or less of the crop we got this year.
