It's true that Goldsmiths doesn't teach the fundamentals of drawing but then again that isn't what the fundamentals of contemporary art are, it's all about ideas. Technical skills are generally taught at lower levels such as A-level or B-tech. I know that the Goldsmiths MFA is all about reconstructing your methods, and they expect you to already have these skills at this late point in your education.
I think these people are already very talented (well, not the Irish one, she's rubbish).
@orangesquidge I took a btec and was never taught any technical skills. Any skill I developed was due to independent work. I'm going to goldsmiths next year and It's frustrating to know they won't give us help on sort of thing, as I feel technical knowledge is just as important as conceptual knowledge; otherwise how can we explore the different methods in which we can portray our ideas? Well, I suppose it's better to learn some things yourself...
@shiril01 Yeah, you have a point, I do think that it's important. I was reading a fictional interview with Hogarth today that raised that point. It's all about working with aesthetics, I think that's the most important thing, learning how to develop your theories in physically. So are you going to be on the Goldsmiths MFA this September? Me too!
Yeah I think they were all really good paintings, very well done. I wish I could paint like that, but his "weakest" one certainly wasn't terrible. I prefer the skeletons on the beach though.
I think a lot of people on this forum are being a bit harsh though. I checked out a few of these students and they're already doing very well in their careers 2 years later.
This is what happens when fine art programs forgo teaching students fundamental skills like perspective, form, gesture, etc.. If you want to learn how to draw, paint, sculpt, design, etc stay far away from most fine art programs and take on classes in graphic design, illustration, or industrial design instead. You'll at least learn something valuable and be able to execute your ideas effectively. You can worry about critiques and what you're "trying to say" after graduation.
@TamaraAndTheDemon Hey, I'm not trying to start an argument or be trollin', so I say this with all due respect, but I liked his paintings - can you fill me in on what you think is good art. Cheers mate, all the best :)
Well i just can NOT believe people like that get entered into the best Uni's and they have to me no talent, Dont get me wrong i'm not pigeoning every one who goes to Goldsmith's or Slade.
People who i think make good art are Gottfried Helnwein, Jenny Saville, Ron Mueck, Mark Sijan, John DeAndra, Duane Hanson, John William Waterhouse, Edward Burne-Jones, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, George Segal, err they are only a few on my favourite list, lol google them see if you agree.
@videowifie - i know the worst one is probaly the one who put a speaker into a shell and he had no idea why he could not even bullshit his why out of it !!!!!
Or the mad irish one who's art was a stolen plant and a email about someone asking for the plant back.
some of the other "artists" on this programme don't appear to have any clue as to the idea's behind their own work. its laughable, goldsmith graduates who are unable to articulate the concepts that gave rise to their own work!
I agree with the critique!!! omgg I can't believe he called that weak!! its the strongest amongst all his rubbish works.. the quality of how it is done on some of his pieces worries me.. not worth of an exhibition.
