@Helldorado2008 I think anyone driving that car would die upon touching the throttle. Maybe schumacher + E30 chassis reinforced with alluminum/titanium alloy or carbon and this baby would make the universe implode of awesomeness.
I heard that they could make 1500 Hp from 1500 cc's for a short time for qualifying...making them about the highest specific-output engines EVER produced. AA-Fuel dragsters don't even equal this. And these things raced flat-out for an hour and a half....NOT 3.5-seconds!
@Xevisberi They once were an awesome company> Now they ditched the strength of a closed deck iron block and went to cheap linerless open deck cast aluminum crap. Not the same at all, Just mass produced junk.
They are more worried about tree huggers and old people now than the enthusiasts that made their company what it is today.
Top fuel dragsters are about 8000hp at 8194cc. Their supercharger is eating about 900hp though so really closer to 9000. They have rules that limit their max too. 1500 from 1500ccs is amazing though when you consider a top fuel engine eats its self quickly and has the advantage of nitro.
@Jakalwarrior true, the top fuel engine has the advantage of nitro-methane.
but the BMW has the advantage of 102 octane fuel running 80% toluene, rocket fuel
"BMW’s dynamometer was not capable of giving a precise reading for the power output but they estimated it at around 1,300hp – a truly staggering figure for a 1.5 litre engine.
This came at a price – the fuels contained around 80% toluene and were poisonous and enormously expensive, costing up to USD $300 per litre at the time."
@dexxy45 It doesnt matter what it runs off though, or how much it costs - its the engineering marvel behind it which is impressive. These were from a time when nobody worried about global warming, or about oil shortages, or about over protective health and safety; they were from a time when the aim was engineering excellence, when anything was possible.
REMEMBER THAT F1 IS ALSO ABOUT SOUND, NOT JUST POWER

They were only tuned to 1500 hp during qualifying. i think they only made about 1200 hp during races

Yeh, it was a turbocharged 4 cylinder 1.5 liter block (M10).
1000hp per liter displacement and 30 years ago.
BMW - they are the best motorists in the world.

@JGMagoo you forget dragsters are supercharged, no one will dare put a turbo on a dragster cause it will just blow the wheels off of it lmao
