The words were written in 1915 during World War I by Hans Leip (1893–1983)... Leip reportedly combined the names of his girlfriend and another female friend. The poem was later published as "Das Lied eines jungen Soldaten auf der Wacht" ("The Song of a Young Soldier on Watch") in 1937, now with the two last (of five) verses added. It was set to music by Norbert Schultze in 1938. Tommie Connor later wrote English lyrics. It was recorded by Lale Andersen in 1939. -- See Wikipedia
Lale Andersen never left Germany. She did have problems during the war because of her friendship with some Jews, but she was used to sing propaganda songs.
We used to listen to Lili Marleen from Radio Hamburg in 1944 on a propagander programme-Introduced by Lord Haw Haw it his signature tune sung by a lady singer
The aim of this video was not to determine someone to admire Lale Andersen . But to let them know that she was THE FIRST SINGER . It is like a movie - a remake may be much better than the original version . But it still remains a REMAKE.
Lale anderson had to escape from nazi arrest I beleive it was Himmler that ordered her arrested. She is much prettier and a better singer than marlene dietreche but Dietreche was a good singer as well and I like both versions.

It's a nice presentation but I was expecting to hear the voice of Lale Anderson. Did I miss something?

Forgive me but this sounds more like a James Last or Bert Kaempfert rendition

This sounds like the version done by Kastelrther Spatzen on one of their earlier CD's. Very nice and the right tempo. Nice post, thanks.

Thanks for this. Of course Lale's career revived in the late 1950s and she had many hits over the next decade.
