  • I miss Mr. ABC himself, Ernie Anderson. He was the best!

  • Actually this was in 1987

  • Its annoying that all of our movie commercials sound like they are being narrated by darth vader.. THIS SUNDAY... /deep, low menacing breath COME WATCH AS... THREE KIDS, AND THEIR DOG... /deep breath again, twice the pause GO ON A WALK IN THE WOODS... DON'T MISS.. WALKING THE DOG!

Who is the guy with the ridiculous voice that always narrates action flick adverts now?

    Anyone know?

  • What a Dull movie with a few Good Fun and Touching Parts.

  • Like the movie or not, I miss the days when sci-fi was still innocent like this.

  • Wasn't that the the theme to Star Trek: The Next Generation?

  • @Clintbdee The theme music to TV's 'Star Trek: The Next Generation' was a rework of Jerry Goldsmith's main theme music from 'Star Trek: The Motion Picture'.

  • LOVE this anouncer

  • Merci pour le partage =)

  • I miss when it was fun to watch movies on the networks. I remember my folks popping some corn before. Thanks for sharing this!

ST:TMP is the first movie I remember seeing at the theater as well. Even got my own TMP tshirt to wear.

  • "Spohhhk!"

  • oh :,\

  • Memories...

You are so right that some action movies were made out to be Sunday Night Movie of the Week Events! 3 hours long sometimes... like the premier of BattleShat Kirkactica!

I saw "Kingdom of the Spiders" on local midnight movie called "Creature Feature" (I'm from San Diego).

    I have "Devil's Rain" on DVD =)

  • the voice over says, 'its time for the original' so id guess this was on the air when wrath of khan was in theatres

  • did this makes its debute to tv in '81 or was it another yr? anyone know?

  • I'm going to take an educated guess from experience and say no. I think it was around 82 or 83/84. Since ST:TMP came out near Christmas of 79 - a year later, at best, it would be on cable like HBO - and cable back then would hold onto a bigger budget movie like this for years or more before they gave it up.

  • @TheKillerWithinNJ I also read somewhere that ABC's broadcast of TMP was tied into the release of the Wrath of Khan later that same year.

  • @TheKillerWithinNJ If this is the original ABC premier showing, it would have been 1983. That was the first appearance of the "Special Longer Version" of TMP which was the version primarily available until the release of the Director's Edition in 2000. There were some scenes deleted from the original theater release that were reinserted into the SLV, such as Kirk's scene where he leaves the Enterprise to chase Spock, and others.

  • @freakshowmonkey - The User 'KXLT77' posted the premiere showing of ST:TMP of airdate 2/20/1983 - you can find it in the related videos listed to the right of this screen.

This is from, I believe, 1986 or '87.

  • @TheKillerWithinNJ

Actually this was in 1987...have it on VHS when my family got its first VCR

  • @mtreams72

    I don't doubt it - thank you!

  • 1983. I remember becuse I was 9 and really looking forward to it becuase ABC always added "extra parts" (i.e. previously cut footage). It didn't disappoint, and I was really happy that they actually released this version on home video a coupl eof years later.

  • This Movie was released in 1979 not 1983

  • @Avatarblackwolf : the "1983" is referring to the TV airdate.

  • The televised version was released in 1983

  • Remember that voice.

  • This was meant to be the pilot for the series " Star Trek: Phase II ". The idea was shelved after the release & success of the 1st Star Wars & recycled into this movie.

TMP was generally ridiculed for being overly burdened with SFX, even being called " Star Trek: The Motionless Picture ".

  • Of course it sucked but do you have to be so mad?

  • This was from March 1987 when ABC aired the movie for the 2nd time.

  • What? Ten years after its release they showed it just twice?

  • Yea, man. Back in the day you only had 5 or 7 channels if you were lucky. Not to mentioned HBO & Showtime. The Sunday night movies were a big deal!

  • I know, we had only 5 or 7 channels as well, but it didn't take ten frigging years to watch a movie in a local station. I saw BTTF for the first time at age 7... in 1989, just 5 years later and with BTTFII raging wild in theaters everywhere..

  • TV movies like "Gargoyles" and "Killdozer" and older films like "Kingdom of the Spiders" and "The Devil's Rain" would be the stuff of local networks ( im from Philly )

Blockbusters from Jaws on up were super rare to come across until VHS hit super saturation after 1987..

Example: I grew up loving Star Wars. Saw Empire the week it came out... didn't see it again for 4 years until the VHS tape came out. Bubble gum cards the the comic books had to tie me over.

  • Jaws, Jaws 2, Close Encounters, Superman, Star Wars, Empire and Raiders, Star Trek TMP and the James Bond movies we're made out to be events.. IF you grew up 10 years earlier, you know you couldn't miss them. By 1989, things changed.

  • That's how it was back in the day. You couldn't get movies just a few months after they came out like today.

  • Man I miss the TNG promos announcer. He was awesome.

  • YEAH!!!!!! When I see the old promos I get a chill because I could not wait till the next week .... soo long ago

  • He has a great voice.

  • @TheStarTreker That was Ernie Anderson. He was great. He was the ABC voice for many years. I loved the way he'd dwell on some words such as "Staaaar Trek" and "Enterpriiiiise."

  • @TheStarTreker His name was Ernie Anderson; Look him up. ;)

  • I still have a tape of this early 87 broadcast, I actually prefer watching this unedited extra content cut of the movie versus the director's cut that came out a few years back. TMP is like one big space opera, the Jerry Goldsmith score is the best thing about this movie.

  • @jdooley95 " the Jerry Goldsmith score is the best thing about this movie."

It's the second best thing about this movie. The best thing about this movie is the shot of the Enterprise hero model at the start during Kirk and Scotties flyby and the closeups just before departure. Absolutely amazing and realistic looking and owned the movie!

  • cool

  • Star Trek was set to do a TV series with most of the old cast .Then star Wars came out and made big $. Star Trek shifted to movies instead.

  • I think it might have been around 1984 at the earliest. That is when ST3: Search for Spock came out. I think it would have been in syndication by the time ST:TNG came out. It probably was in syndication when ST4 came out. I seem to recall watching it on WPIX 11 in NYC around 1986 (they aired regular ST), but who knows.

  • Actually, reading TheKillerWithinNJ comment, I guess I watched this on ABC. If so, it was either the end of 1986 or the beginning of 1987, for I saw it when I was living in Brooklyn and that was the last winter/fall at that home. It was definitely during that time of year. It would make sense to, for cross promoting ST4 or if in 1987, for the sweeps. The best movies were played in November, February, or May.

  • i think that was on feb 1987 when the movie was shown on abc for the 2time because that was when i had a vcr and started to tape it, i had that copy fore the longest time until the i bought the movie on videotape that was special edtion widescreen i think

  • Don't hate me for this, but I liked how ABC did the picture quality on their movies they shown back then, it was like watching it on a movie screen.

  • Is this the 1983 primere of Star Trek TMP on ABC? I know thats the extended version that was released on VHS!

  • No, I guessamate around 1985 or 1986.. I didn't have access to a VCR until Summer 1984... and I didn't start recording crap till sometime after that because blank tapes were expensive.

  • Maybe 1987-88, about the time TNG started airing, and some ABC Stations (at the time) also Airs TNG, so the tag could be a reference to Kirk's crew.

  • Is Ernie Anderson still doing the voice of ABC?

  • He was. He died on February 14, 1997.

  • Oh no Rest in Peace. He was also the great voice of ABC

  • They actually had a sound-alike do a voice over for the new ABC show Life on Mars! That's pretty awesome.

  • I believe the announcer was Ernie Anderson, who had a long run as the voice of ABC.

  • I believe you are correct, Sir! I loved the James Bond intros He did for ABC Sunday Night At The Movies. I have part of the beginning of 'Man With The Golden Gun' on tape.. I wish someone had a collection of them.

  • I was too little to see the movie in the theater... so the ABC airing was my first exposure to TMP... in fact, I have an old VHS copy recorded from the ABC telecasts (bumpers, commercials and all), and I still remember the distinct bumpers (there were two... one was the clip of Kirk rising to meet Spock, the other was when the green V'ger plasma bolts were being launched toward the Earth) with the announcer guy "Now back to Star Trek: The Motion Picture!" I should dig out that tape and watch it!

  • I think that's "The first chapter in the theatrical adbventures of the Starship Enterprise."

It's cool to hear the voice of TNG preview announcer for the original movies.
