Lots of wrestlers who attempted to end careers of their opponents: Macho Man Randy Savage using the ringbell on Steamboat was one of them, later The Dragon and Macho Man wrestled for the IC Title which was one of the iconic matches of all time.
Nita is really poor skill of pro wrestling. he is just entertainer - fake wrestler. but at this time, he made a trend of death match. Muta just take business for his company.
THESE ASSHOLES ( MCMAHON AND BISCHOFF ) SHOULD LOOK AT THE THIS MATCH. YES THEY DONT SELL WORTH A SHIT. BUT THE SPECIAL EFFECTS ARE GREAT. IT LOOKS LIKE PAPER AND SMOKE COMING OUT WHEN THEY HIT THE WIRE AONG WITH A BOOM.
Smokin some serious stuff to even mention the underlings of Nexus in the same breath as the GREAT MUTA. CM Punk is the only one qualified of taking him on. Which I would pay to see that. But dont EVEN mention Otunga or others in the same breathe. That is a shit idea.
Funny how people compare the WWE Kiddie Hornswoggle Shit to real wrestling. WWF was once a great promotion, but now it is just a place where shit is produced. Shit, that is definetly not entertaining. That is what I think.
Nexus is bunch of cunts. By the way, throw in Skip Sheffield who is their big men and can be use to beat down Muta in the death match. The guy has a great muscle, power, and strength. Sheffield has won some matches in the WWE, but its a PG show. David Otunga has some skills to handle Muta, overcome the stiff kicks and take him down.
@21richkid LMAO You are kidding right? Otunga is fucking terrible in the ring.He has more botches in one match as much as a WWE fan can count.Skip Sheffield? He could make it in Japan like Lance Cade did but he could never hang with Muta.Michael Tarver? Just a wannabe boxer punk. As for all of the nexus members they would probably never dare to get in any deathmatch let alone in a match with the Great Muta.
The Nexus members from WWE such as Wade Barrett, David Otunga, Heath Slater, Justin Gabriel, Husky Harris, Joe Henning, Skip Sheffield could survive against Muta or Nita in a death match. Lets throw in Michael Tarver, he could use his street brawling style against Muta and use it as an advantage. Maybe Otunga can take this Nita down with the Spinebuster. Nexus is the future of pro wrestling.
This match just proved that even Muto can step in the world of Deathmatch with a fellow badass Atsushi Onita. Great match from two iconic figures in Puroesu.
@ShaolinDynasty yeah some kid left a comment about last weeks tna impact saying his mom doesnt let him watch it because its too violent and he thinks cena's the best her mom would shit her pants if she would of seen this
I think it's stupid to have a weapon like this in wrestling. The barbed wires are already a stretch. But a metal hook thingy? This is not only dangerous, it also destroys the illusion that wrestling is. I mean, they are beating each other with a mteal hook but don't injure each other, it's the ulitame proof that everything is fake. Doesn't make sense.
@Puschit1 Because it is the only stupid thing in this match? You know, kicking after being electrocuted and injured with barber wire and being in an explosion... He is suppose to be death.
@Puschit1 Well, it is a bad theatrical performance, a bad work. I was reading some history of sport entertainment by Jim Cornette for a silly school project. Than, when I finished it I tought "well let have a look at FMW, it suppose to be really bad" and...Starting with the intro of the great Nita which is too much of a gimmick and bring no reaction -look at the reaction at 4:55, when Muta show is face- there is many thing that are hard to believe. And now, how to top that without injuries?
That's what I am talking about, you can't top that and thus should not try to top that. We are way beyond the point that. The gimmicks and storylines get more retarded each year. But apparently nobody is willing to pull the trigger and go some steps back. I enjoyed wrestling in the mid 80s and early 90s, when the NWA still existed. But somehow Vince MacMahon ruined it all with stupid gimmick upon stupid gimmick and buying out all other federations. How I miss the good old times!
@Puschit1 Well, they did top that... I hear the "what?f'!": the exploding ring match were the ring "explode" (literally) after 20 minutes or whatever.
However, I will take a bit of defense of Vince McMahon: he cut a bit this b.s when he saw the level of injury after 3.5 years with an hardcore title. And, his product is not bad, but it is not very good...Maybe from 4/10 to 7/10. He do have good characters:CM Punk,Marella, Cena. But he also have "crap" HHH, Khali, Big Show... He need concurrence.
I wouldnt mind attempting a match like this, it would have to be a HUGE blowoff match and then I spend a hell of a lot of time resting up and letting people wonder what happened to me, or it would be my retirement match
This is the Muta (attitude) WCW should have used in 2000, when he and Vampiro were facing Sting, but just having the chance to see Muta back then was a blessing, he is a TRUE legend, Onita too!!!
This is the Muta (attitude) WCW should have used in 2000, when he and Vampiro were fighting Sting, but just having the chance to see Muta back then was good enough, what a legend, Onita too!!!
@MAJS444 Yeah, I've always been a fan of the barbed wire because it looks more menacing than glass which looks rather weak but yet rips the guys to shreds.
I love exploding barbed wire, it is quite a spectacle. I wish more American deathmatches used it like the Japanese used to. Even BJW uses mainly glass, rare is an explosion.

2. tna and wwe would never do this (tna did a few but never exploding and they'll never do it again). but there are plentyyyyy of indy promotions who do it all the time.
Great Muta. My #5 top wrestler. Out of 5, lol. I used to be disgusted with him, but the more I watch his matches his ring psychology is top notch. Awesome.
so i guess every japanese legend has to do these deathmatches at least once in their career. Like i just watched Othani's match with Matsunuga...that guy is amazing
This is the full name of this match___The Great Muta destroys The Great Nita 8.28.99 in Barbed Wire Barricade-Electric Land Mine Double Hell Death Match.....The Great Muta Forever !!!!
ive seen some bigger explosions but since theyre indoors it makes sense but Im sure it didnt hurt Onita any less, being right on the floor by the "mines", the concussion alone would put you out
Hardcore matches are one thing, but these deathmatches are just stupid to me. I love it when weapons are used as a part of an actual move like a Northern Lights Bomb onto a chair or something, but when you take a freggin sickle to the head and bounce back like you were punched? Come on.... Mutoh was above doing this shit.
idk mutoh cared dude you have to remember before this with his match with hase was concidered one of the bloodiest matches ever and also brought forth the muta scale and muta was known for using weapons like a barb and a wooden stake that jinsei shinzaki would bring with him
Yeah I suppose that's true. I guess it's just the whole sickle thing that ticks me off. I mean, it's a freggin 8 inch long blade. How the hell is it not sticking in their foreheads? lol.
Another thing that ticked me off was how there were, and still are, all these guys doing the whole "Great -----" gimmick. Demeans the whole Muta character if you ask me.
the deathmatch is ingrained in the Japanese wrestling world and is kept alive by many companies and wrestlers willing to keep the style alive one was the now defunct FMW promotion
Hey, I'm not dissin' the deathmatch. They can be quite entertaining. I just prefer a little realism in them. They don't sell chairshots a lot in Japan which is good cuz you get hit with a chair in real life, you don't get knocked out cold. But you get jabbed in the face with a freggin scythe? People tend to die that way, lol.
ECW had it right. Hardcore brutality with technical wrestling intertwined. God, I miss that shit.
@joenelles Of course it is a bit unrealistic :D But it is also a part of their gimmick. Great Nita and Great Muta were two demons clashing in the ring and the gimmick of demon is of course one of a person that does not get hurt that easy, like the Undertaker oder Kane ;)
There was some great build up to this match as well too. Onita "finding" Nita. Anyone who does not get this match does not get Japanese Wrestling and only know WWF stuff. Great story telling.
Someone else has that clip on Onita "finding" Nita to go after Muta. Also NJPW was getting upset that Onita had been causing havoc within their ranks. Even Keiji Mutoh was calling out for NITA!!!
To see wrestlers TRY to go hardcore is degrading to everything they did as a normal wrestler. Muta seems better in normal wrestling than Japan hardcore. Japan hardcore is VERY pointless, bombs and dumb shit like that is stupid.
In NJPW they saw Japan's hardcore division as watered down. Onita was gonna be a great singles wrestler until his knees were torn in the early 80's. He turned to hardcore to make his name..... and he did!!! You have to watch Onita's FMW when he ran it to understand what he did b4 coming to NJPW!!
I believe it was Atsushi's original idea to bring back Nita for one last time [crazier than ever] against the Great Muta. I also believe that it was Atsushi's idea to lose the match and let Keiji [finally] put Nita to sleep forever. This is my favourite wrestling match to watch cause it's really cool seeing the best two gimmicks in history going against each other in a battle of wits and magic, of mystery and wonders. A pure mix of styles.......
If you look exactly at 17:52 you can see that it is Muta who creates the fireball. I think I've seen another video here - maybe not - where the fireball episode is shown more clearly.
everybody in New Japan no sold Onita's offense, first it was Sasaki then Chono this time Muta, Onita got no respect in New Japan but Im sure he got plenty of yen!
Iam not from Japan that is very simple iam using english hihihihihi Ive been watching wrestling since i was 14 we didnt have wrestlinf in comunist Poland ,Great Muta changed my out look on the sport of wrestling,it was like magic,,!!! compering to stiff and boring american wrestlers,,I have a great friend that was a wrestler and we both liked to freak peple out with muta faces and like we are ready to spit the mist, hey man he is Great!!! Muta forever!!!
I've hear rumors that Keiji Mutoh wasn't happy on doing this match, because he felt that he had done more violent and brutal matches without needing deathmatches and stuff.
Don't forget Koijima either, loved his style...But aren't you guys forgeting Liger? He got more mainstream attention in the states than any of the other Japanese Hvywghts.
Dude, where do these guys get their entrance gear? If I had an outfit like one of those, I'd wear it just walking down the street, especially Muta's Robot/demon get-up.
this match took place in new japan. onita created the great nita gimmick to make fun of keijo mutho american gimmick the great muta. so onita chalaged mutho too this match. new japan did not want to do this match but onita promised to tone it down a bit. if you notice mutho only take one hard bump into the barb wire and he still has his robe on when he does it.this match is good but toned down compared to onita,s other death matches.
When did this match take place plz and how did it come about? Cheers. Never expected Mutoh to be in a barbed wire match. Which other Japanese legends have (Non FMW wrestlers) taken part in a death match? I ask as I'm new to puro. Cheers
August 28, 1999 I believe or 1998. Onita had abandoned FMW and joined NJPW. In an answer to your ? about non FMW wrestlers taken part in a death match THE GREAT SASUKE.

LOL after the DDT at the start of the match he takes off his coat, lol
the1andonlybigh 2 years ago
ive seen some bigger explosions but since theyre indoors it makes sense but Im sure it didnt hurt Onita any less, being right on the floor by the "mines", the concussion alone would put you out

These matches are weird. There's a friggin' sickle in the ring. Why bother with kicks and punches?
Do the poison mist. Blind the other guy. Take away the weapon. Then KILL the motherfucker!

greatmuta2 2 years ago 2
Hardcore matches are one thing, but these deathmatches are just stupid to me. I love it when weapons are used as a part of an actual move like a Northern Lights Bomb onto a chair or something, but when you take a freggin sickle to the head and bounce back like you were punched? Come on.... Mutoh was above doing this shit.
joenelles 2 years ago
idk mutoh cared dude you have to remember before this with his match with hase was concidered one of the bloodiest matches ever and also brought forth the muta scale and muta was known for using weapons like a barb and a wooden stake that jinsei shinzaki would bring with him
greatmuta2 2 years ago
Yeah I suppose that's true. I guess it's just the whole sickle thing that ticks me off. I mean, it's a freggin 8 inch long blade. How the hell is it not sticking in their foreheads? lol.
Another thing that ticked me off was how there were, and still are, all these guys doing the whole "Great -----" gimmick. Demeans the whole Muta character if you ask me.
joenelles 2 years ago
the deathmatch is ingrained in the Japanese wrestling world and is kept alive by many companies and wrestlers willing to keep the style alive one was the now defunct FMW promotion
KornmanUNstoppable 2 years ago
Hey, I'm not dissin' the deathmatch. They can be quite entertaining. I just prefer a little realism in them. They don't sell chairshots a lot in Japan which is good cuz you get hit with a chair in real life, you don't get knocked out cold. But you get jabbed in the face with a freggin scythe? People tend to die that way, lol.
ECW had it right. Hardcore brutality with technical wrestling intertwined. God, I miss that shit.
joenelles 2 years ago 9
ecw had high-flyin shit too, from 2 cold scorpio to rvd
biloretard 2 years ago
@joenelles Of course it is a bit unrealistic :D But it is also a part of their gimmick. Great Nita and Great Muta were two demons clashing in the ring and the gimmick of demon is of course one of a person that does not get hurt that easy, like the Undertaker oder Kane ;)

There was some great build up to this match as well too. Onita "finding" Nita. Anyone who does not get this match does not get Japanese Wrestling and only know WWF stuff. Great story telling.
A classic.
defelippo 3 years ago 3
Someone else has that clip on Onita "finding" Nita to go after Muta. Also NJPW was getting upset that Onita had been causing havoc within their ranks. Even Keiji Mutoh was calling out for NITA!!!
pats14fann01 2 years ago
To see wrestlers TRY to go hardcore is degrading to everything they did as a normal wrestler. Muta seems better in normal wrestling than Japan hardcore. Japan hardcore is VERY pointless, bombs and dumb shit like that is stupid.
MR469 3 years ago

AMAZING
Thanx very much to Jacenpunk for uploadi

Don't think I've ever seen Muta no sell as much as he did in this match. Must have been something going on behind the scenes.
skullgame 3 years ago
he no sells the fireball because the Great Muta is THE Wrestling God now if we can get that through John "Bradshaw" Layfield's fat empty skull
supersasukemaniac 3 years ago 3
If you look exactly at 17:52 you can see that it is Muta who creates the fireball. I think I've seen another video here - maybe not - where the fireball episode is shown more clearly.
centercounter 2 years ago
everybody in New Japan no sold Onita's offense, first it was Sasaki then Chono this time Muta, Onita got no respect in New Japan but Im sure he got plenty of yen!

Muta forever!!!
marcinbohun 3 years ago 3
I've hear rumors that Keiji Mutoh wasn't happy on doing this match, because he felt that he had done more violent and brutal matches without needing deathmatches and stuff.

Dude, where do these guys get their entrance gear? If I had an outfit like one of those, I'd wear it just walking down the street, especially Muta's Robot/demon get-up.

Great Nita.... no he didn't.
pats14fann01 3 years ago
this match took place in new japan. onita created the great nita gimmick to make fun of keijo mutho american gimmick the great muta. so onita chalaged mutho too this match. new japan did not want to do this match but onita promised to tone it down a bit. if you notice mutho only take one hard bump into the barb wire and he still has his robe on when he does it.this match is good but toned down compared to onita,s other death matches.
proger12 3 years ago 5
Like the sickle also..... notice how there's no blood from Mutoh's head. The blade had to be dulled for this match.
pats14fann01 3 years ago
actually the Ref is a WAR ref which is an also defunct promotion
KornmanUNstoppable 2 years ago
When did this match take place plz and how did it come about? Cheers. Never expected Mutoh to be in a barbed wire match. Which other Japanese legends have (Non FMW wrestlers) taken part in a death match? I ask as I'm new to puro. Cheers
KenKob85 3 years ago
August 28, 1999 I believe or 1998. Onita had abandoned FMW and joined NJPW. In an answer to your ? about non FMW wrestlers taken part in a death match THE GREAT SASUKE.
