I'm having a hard time finding: NO sugar/nitrate/syrups/etc bacon, no sugar ham, no sugar dressings, no sugar mayonnaise, no sugar spaghetti sauces IS it ok to use a product such as bacon that has sugar in it but 0 carbs still?
@pnoyguitar After the first 2-3 weeks, I had more energy than ever before, and I lift more weight than ever before and also have run multiple marathons now as well. Needless to say, any weakness or fatigue has long past.
@bowulf I guess our body goes through transformation. I am doing the atkin's diet as well. It's hard, but I try to eat less carbs. I'm Asian, so it's really hard to eat without rice. =D
@bowulf the first time i did atkins, i did not see any results but my healthy was improved significantly n i felt great! But this time even thou I lose weight I just feel weak anh tired most of the time n this is the second week already, usually cold in hands n feet which is never happened last time. I don't know what happened :(
@pnoyguitar I would kindly suggest that your coworker needs to refresh herself on what the Atkins diet actually is. It is not a mostly protein diet. It is actually moderate or standard protein, but rather high fat diet. If you deprive yourself of the fat, you are not seeing the true effect of the diet.
The second point about ketoacidosis is simply wrong as you enter ketosis not ketoacidosis. As for weakness or fatigue, that only exists at most for the first 2-3 weeks.
@Peiazjaeh You didn't completely ruin your progress, but you have to figure out how it happened. If it was just an accident that you couldn't have avoided, then just pick up where you are. If you subcombed to a craving, then I would suggest you do 14 days of Induction again. Check out my "I cheated. What now? video for more information.
@bowulf Thanks SO much for responding!!! it was an accident, but I'm only on day 2/3. I'm planning on restarting anyway, because I miscalculated (according to myplate) and I had 60 g of carbs instead of 20-.
I have two questions
1.can you still (somehow) go into ketosis while eating over 20 g per day? (I know it's not the rule, but I'm curious about how it works) (p.s I just bought the book)
2. Is there a way to "cancel out" too many carbs? Like today, can I "cancel" out 40 carbs by eating a
@Peiazjaeh 1. yes, you can go into ketosis if you eat over 20g. Ketogenic diets are generally 65% Fat and less than 40-50g per day. I believe 20g was the safe figure to guarantee everyone would start on the right foot.
2. Yes and no. Yes, if you immediately start working out, you could counteract the effects a little; however, in my head that's a bit like bulimia. Except instead of purging, you exercise like crazy. I would take the lump as a lesson for next time.
Respond to this video... eating a whole ton of celery and fiber?
3. (sorry 1 more question) Does exercising affect your rate of ketosis? If I eat a good amount of calories but then exersise a bunch, will that make myb body unwilling to go into ketosis?
THANK YOU so much.
I'm so glad I leared about this "diet/lifestyle" because it's really something amazing.
(p.s I only have about 20 to 15 lbs. to loose but... I wonder if it's easier to go into ketosis if you are heavier or lighter)
@Peiazjaeh Remember we are focusing long term not just get the weight off quick. In that manner the rate of ketosis should mean less than eating right and learning your body's relationship to food again. As for exercise, it can help, but I generally say give your body a chance in the first 2-3 weeks to adapt to the diet first and get acclimated, and then resume exercising.
@MySummerChallenge Check out my video for how much will I lose on Induction where I talk about this question. The short answer is almost anything is achievable, but what if you get to 135 or 140 is that a failure? You'll likely be much more healthy than today, and eat a lot better.
@jerrysmith29 Yes both are fine 1 cup per day veggie. Check out my "Can I eat this on Induction?" video for the complete list of Acceptable Indcution foods in the link in the video description.
HA I think I see what I'm doing wrong on induction, 1 month 1 day into it....not enough water (drinking close to 1 gallon a day) and possibly not measuring the veggies right. Are we supposed to measure veggies before or after cooking them? And maybe not enough meats or food in general. I went from vegetarian/vegan to Atkins. Also I was told that I could eat the dressing with sugar (Ken's blue cheese with 1g) but maybe this is making me stall. Do you make your own dressings bo? Mayo and salad?
@cind311 You should typically measure or estimate before cooking with veggies -- especially those that wilt (cabbage, spinach) Watch my portion size video where I demonstrate estimating the amounts because honestly I didn't actually measure much.
I'll leave the question of stalling to the other reply, but in case you are seeing slower weight loss this week than your initial weeks, check out my Post Induction Stall syndrome video. It's normal. For salad dressings, I mainly eat Caesar dressing.
@bowulf I have a LOT of weight to lose, over 100lbs...still no weight loss and started at the gym today :) below is what I ate today. I have not lost in weeks,no aspartame, I have had atkins bars (all phases) every so often. 3 whole eggs 1 cut up mushroom 2T olive oil 1t heavy cream 2oz steak 4 8oz of water 1 cup red leaf lettuce 2 thin slices tomato 3T salad dressing (ken's 1 carb) 2 8oz of water 20 shrimp with butter, 1T garlic, black pepper, dash of old bay seasoning 100oz of water
@cind311 I am partial to giving up the bars. Your menus look great other than that. I honestly think you are simply in Post Induction Stall (check the video for more info), and your body is preparing to drop the water very shortly.
Here is a question of mine and one future video suggestion if you are open to do such a thing:
First, which book did you follow to loose your weight?
For a suggestion I am wondering if it would be possible to have a futre video that shows proportions of induction foods. Such as what does 2-3 cups of veggies loosely packed looks like in a measuring cup to a plate. I think incorrect proportions are probably my biggest mistake than eating the wrong foods.
@jmarek123 I follow the 2002 version of the DANDR.
Your idea (making a video on portion sizes) is actually on my list of things to do. I don't think it is realistic for most people to measure all their foods, so visually measuring things is how most people count carbs. I was going to take pictures of each portion size, so people can estimate appropriately.
I have been watching your videos for quite some time now. I've read the book and find these videos to be very helpful to reiterate what I have already learned to help keep me on track.
Thanks very much for sharing your experience and giving people the tools in an easier to digest format.
@jmarek123 You are welcome. I think the books do an excellent job and are the best starting place, but I know what you mean about sometimes it is sometimes easier to understand visually.
Im a vegetarian and have been for most of my life. I recently started atkins and after the first day I noticed that the Quorn product I had eaten in total the pack had 1g of sugar in it. I was wondering:
A. Is there a minimum amount of sugar you can have, because all quorn products have sugar I think.
B. Has this ruined the begining of my diet, and if so, would it be because 1g of sugar is too high? Thanks
@Teddykinso Wish I could help, I am new to this too. I think the point is to go 0g sugar, this is why you should be careful when using anything with sugars, starches, or other "hidden" sugars. I was told I could do 1g sugar in the mayo or dressing I use but this might be why I am stalling! The vegetarian Atkins is very hard to do, I abandoned it before I even started!
I'm starting the Atkins diet soon (gotta go shopping) I read the book and understand what he is saying about sugar, the glycemix index, and ketosis...it was an interesting read!
It flies in the face of what diets preach constantly about "low fat" and that's probably why I can never stay on one! So I'm exited. I don't have a huge amount to loose, I'm young and in perfect health so this sounds like finally the diet (lifestyle) for me.
@Tristeanne I am glad you like my channel. I answered most of your questions in the pm, but I wanted to reiterate them here as well. My suggestion would be to follow the diet as prescribed. Whey protein specifically has milk proteins in it that may cause allergic sensitivities that could prevent weight loss. Check out the "Induction is more than 20g or less," as it explains it better.
Hello, my name is Cristiane, I discovered your channel yesterday and I'm completly fascinated with it. I'm from Brazil, ( I'm sorry, my English is not good) and I had iniciate Atkins' diet last week, as my doctor recommended. She also prescribed me whey protein in chocolate form instead of vitamins, but I'm confused because I'm reading the book and there is nothing about whey protein in induction phase, I'm worry I'm breaking the rules. Can you help me?
Hello..hope u doing great!! I wanna start this diet so bad..I have 2 months to lose soem weight ..I have gall bladder problems, do you think this diet cna make me wrong?
I am into my 19 th day of induction and for a week now I am not loosing weight. I lost total of 4 kgs (prior to last week). What am I doing wrong? I am following the same routine.
@nidhitripathy It is natural to have one week stalls of no weight loss, and then the body to pick up. Watch my post Induction stall syndrome video for why this happens, and why over-reacting or changing is counter-productive.
Thanks a lot for your valuable guidance... I took the chicken cutlet thinking it was a chicken item just fried... permitted class but came to know later that it contained the crumbs. Thankyou once again I will watch the video. In fact before posting my query I searched this topic with your name but could not find one.. perhaps did not type the word cheater!
by day 11, I lost 4 kgs.. but on day 11 by mistake i ate a chicken cutlet , which contained bread crumbs... I saw my weighing scale going up the next day... what should I do now... does this mean I have to restart 2 weeks induction again?
@nidhitripathy Check out my "I cheated, what should I do?" video for a better, longer answer.
The short answer is if you ate it because you thought it was legal, and later found out differently, then take it as a lesson to committing yourself to finding out first before eating anything. You can probably then continue where you are at. If you knew it wasn't legal and ate anyhow due to cravings, then I would suggest restarting Induction.
you said the point of the induction phase is to get your body used to burning fat for fuel. But wouldn't it be simpler to just do more cardio? cardio burns fat for fuel
@Chaaarge You could achieve the burning exclusively fat for fuel by running, BUT you would need to run approximately 20 miles. That's the point in which your body has burned all the remaining glycogen in the body. Running 20 miles each day to rid yourself of carbohydrates to normalize blood sugar is not possible for 99.999% of people.
Simply burning fat for fuel is not the same as burning fat exclusively for fuel.
Sorry the gum thing is one I don't know. I have never been a gum chewer, so I just don't know. AtkinsDietbulletinboard would be the place I would go to ask that question.
There is NOTHING wrong with gum. Chew a sugarless gum. There's nothing wrong with carbs. Enjoy all the fruits and vegetables you desire. It's impossible to overeat on them because they're such water dense bulky high fiber low calorie foods by nature. And of course that's the whole idea..get as close to nature as possible. Eat the foods from the good earth as they come. Enjoy natural grains and brown rice, put some low fat yogurt and vegetables in that and sprinkle on some olive oil. Sound good?
Lots of things come from the earth. How about arsenic? Have some sense and regulate what crap you put in your body? What is funny is that you end up recommending "low fat yogurt " in your next sentence. What earth does that come from, and how much processing is necessary to achieve it being low fat?
i remember you said in one of your videos.. you said " atkins without exercise... you can look good with clothes on ...and with exercise you can look good naked lol "
Now I am exercising with the wii fit just CARDIO...NO PUSH UPS YET just Cardio and working up a sweat.... Now can I still eat Pork Rinds and the dip?
Also whats your intake about the Crystal Lite Green tea ?
Check the ingredients for the Crystal Lite Green Tea. Aspartame is generally discouraged on Atkins, but some have no problem with it. I try to minimize my intake to almost none. Either way though, you are limited to three servings per day of artificially sweetened items.
ok listen .... I am starting the atkins but I also bought the Wii Fit Gold Gym Cardio Fitness... I do the boxing thing for an hour every morning... for breakfast I eat tunafush with crackers and water only.... about 10 crackers....
is this good or not?
aLso can I eat a whole bag of pork rinds with some dip... both have no carbs?
The crackers are obviously loaded with refined starches (flour), so I would not have them. For Pork Rinds, as long as they have no added sugars or starches in the ingredients, you can have as many as it takes to make you feel full. The dip has the same caution - look for sugars and starches in the ingredients. If it has them, you will want to make your own out of sour cream.
Heya:) I am on atkins and am five days into induction, but even though I havent eaten anything apart from eggs and meats and cheese I feel like I need the diet coke and have tea around 3 times a week. I have a can everyday. And have already lost 2-3lbs in 5 days. how often can I have a can? Oh and also can I have diet sodas without caffiene in them instead?
Keep in mind you should be eating 2-3 cups of vegetables per day even on Induction. Making Atkins a zero carb or near zero carb diet does not make it more successful. It usually leads to these cravings or "needs." The cautions against caffeine and aspartame are just that. Some people can lose while having them but others can not.
In either case you should limit ALL artificially sweetened items to 3 total servings per day.
I used to have lots of tea with sugar and caffeine in my diet. Is it easier to not give up both should I allow myself SOME caffeine? Or is it better to go cold turkey from sugar and caffeine.
Some people do fine on some caffeine. I personally had no middle ground and had to give up both completely. My wife however still keeps her habit to a minimum and still loses well. It's really a YMMV thing.
As much as I would like to lay another curse at the feet of diet sodas, I don't think I can with constipation. At least I have never heard of that link. I am not saying it couldn't exist, but it isn't as likely. Artificial Sweeteners can cause the opposite problem though.
I had very bad constipation during induction that I had to go on a detox after induction and i didn't dare to continue. do you have any tips to prevent constipation during induction? I take lots of veggies and water, but didn't seem to work. I would definetly wanna continue atkins diet as it helped me lose 10pounds during induction. but now i'm confused of whether it was water lost or fat lost:(
Ask and you shall receive - check out my Atkins Diet and Consitipation (google it or search here). You'll see my recommendation of ground flax meal. I grind my own seeds in a coffee grinder. Certainly a portion was water lost, but in 2 weeks, you also were burning fat as well.
You should eat 2-3 cups of veggies on Induction. What you are looking for is a near zero carb diet, and you'll be missing a lot of phytonutrients if you do.
I asked experts like my doctor, and they said go on it. They also congratulated me when I lost the 211 pounds, had 5 years of subsequent great annual physicals and blood analysis, and after I completed my multiple marathons. If by ill, you mean Induction flu which is temporary, then yes you can get or feel ill.
I have tried to let you make your point across multiple comments, and it just isn't progressing. (Buy a punctuation PLEASE!) Welcome to my block file.
Day 2...here is my only concern. But I am going to ignore half of what I hear in the gym. I am 180 pounds, 5'1 but my BMI is about 22..I am simply built thick so I am getting into this gym thing now. 20 to 40 mins on the elliptical, 200 sit ups and lifting weights. People have made comment I will gain weight this way. I do not think so. Carbs are what hvae made me fat!! Any thoughts on this?? People guess me to be 160 maybe..when they see me. I am a 39 yr old female. Ya think I may gain fat??
If you follow the diet as prescribed, you will be burning fat for fuel and you will lose more fat as opposed to lean body mass than on any other way of eating. Can you overeat on this diet and gain weight? Sure, but it's really difficult to do. The body naturally suppresses hunger when you are in ketosis, and you stop eating when you aren't hungry.
i am a 19 yr old mother of 2 and it is so hard for me to loos the weight as i was watching your videos i can see that i over eat and dont even know it i came from 120 to 170lbs do you really think i can loss the fat?
Absolutely you can lose... I am convinced that once people start regulating their blood sugar and get into ketosis that they set themselves up for big losses in the future. It is just a matter of following the plan as written.
If you do it right, you will lose fat and reduce your body fat percentage. Without the presence of carbs, the production is reduced or eliminated, and fat can't be stored on the body without insulin.
I believe you. I ahve to be honest, in the small meals I am eating, I am FULL. Literally, having to make myself eat. lol It is weird but kiinda cool. I was so hungry on carbs...this diet may become my way of life. Yesterday all I had was 2 eggs, 6 oz of salmon. Lunch, burger, small salad. Dinner, small buger. I was STUFFED. Today I have no appetite. So I am cooking a slew of chicken legs and a turkey and will just keep it on hand to nibble on. And a gallon of water a day.
bull the atkins diet does not make you sick!,,,,when you do the atkins diet your not shoving large amounts of sugar into your body ,,,and sugar is bad for you ,in the quantitys that most americans eat it everyday,,now thats making people sick!
I'm in Ketosis! I think I have been for the past 5 days or so because I am never hungry anymore. I've been on atkins for 7 days today. I know I'm in ketosis now for sure because I bought some Ketostix and that thing came out dark purple. I was happy to see it. Only problem is I can't really give up aspartame completely, I need some diet soda. I don't think it's affecting me though. I did order some stevia sweeter for my one cup of coffee a day. THIS DIET IS AWESOME!!!!!!
I struggled giving up Aspartame too but when I did I felt so much better. Something I've noticed is that it tends to be own brand cheap supermarket fizzy drinks that tend to ditch the Aspartame and use the far safer and better Sucralose, at least in the UK where I am ;)
Be careful if you continue with the Aspartame, it can kick you out of Ketosis!
i love your video series....it is so inspiring...my brother in law was 350lbs....he has been on induction for about 6 months and has lost 75lbs already...he is what first inspired me....thank you for your videos...im gonna go watch the next one right now....is there anything sweet that you can have while on induction?...i know that sugar free jello has no carbs or sugar....is that ok....
is it true that you would lose fat faster when you have alot of fat on body? l started diet last monday and l lost 4 lb but other then l lost 3% body fat. I'm trying counting calorie too and try eat 1200 calorie a day. l'm having half cucumber, l small tomatos and lettuce as veggie. but my friend lost 7 lb in one week but she is way bigger than me. I'm 154 lb now and l wanna be 130. my husband didnt lose anything and he is about to guit. what we are doing wrong? thank you
People with more to lose will lose more weight quickly. I personally would ignore Calories with the exception to eating ABOVE or near your BMR level. Too many people fall into a starvation mode dieting by dropping their Calories too low. You lost over 12% of your weight to lose in the first 14 days. That is fantastic!(goal should be ~5-10%)
For you, I would be ecstatic, and you should be happy. As for your husband, have him start tracking his food at Mydailyplate, and we can see what's up?
hello, i'm planning to start tomorrow and i'm going grocery shopping tomorrow. I've been doing alot of research tho and my question is this, i notice you are not allowed to have cut meats that have been treated with nitrates or sugar. My question is this, is nitrites the same as nitrates??? cos i bought bacon and ham last week and i was looking at the ingredients and it was cured with nitrites, is it forbidden then??
Hey bowulf i had 1 whole chicken barbeequed with about 2 cups of franks red hot sauce and i feel like ive eaten to much. its been 1 week of induction and dont look any skinnier, i just look fatter. what can you suggest ? and also franks red hot sauce is no sugar no carbs so does that mean you can have as much as you want ? get back asap thanks
Hello. I know it says to eat liberal amounts of fat and protein on induction. I have a very large amount of weight to lose and I was planning on continuing induction well after 14 days. What I was wondering is should I still continue to eat the way that I am now in induction? I would keep my carbs at 20 grams but should I start to cut down a bit in the fat and protein (eating my chicken skinless and using leaner hamburger)?
You can stay on Extended Induction well past the 14 days, but your ratios should stay about the same. Otherwise you are moving to more of high protein diet than high fat diet. Check out my video on high fat vs high protein on why high protein low fat is not as desirable.
Remember you are eating until you are satiated that may change during the diet, and that you do indeed need to fuel your body with something. Too low Calories can impede weight loss.
ahhh I see now. re read some of DANDR and re watched some videos. As long as I keep my ratios the same and eating till satisfied I should be on track. Thank you for a quick response. And thank you for all your great informative videos!
Thank you! I've been doing induction for about a week with NO weight loss- and after watching this, I realize my diet coke, aspertame, equal & caffiene is probably causing me the issue. I appreciate you taking the time to make these helpful videos! I'm going to eliminate the artificial sweetner & coffee and get back to you! THANKS.Karin
If you look through my past videos, you'll see the skeptics posting on my videos, and you'll see my responses. There are generally two tacts - those that are curious and misinformed, who you can correct with the science and studies, and those that are so engrained in their dietary fat is the devil and with these you simply ignore. Then you rub your success in their face when you hit goal. :-D
i went thru the induction period and didn't lose any weight, is it because i was not eating enough? i would eat for breakfast and drink 1 cup of water throughout the day and then eat dinner...
If that was all you were eating and drinking for the day, then yes that is what could be happen. If you are not eating at least your BMR routinely, your body can enter starvation mode.
I am not sure from what point you are talking about, but the goal is to eat until you are not hungry any longer. If I misspoke, that is what I meant. A person should let his hunger determine if he should be eating or not. If you are hungry, eat, and if not, don't.
That is the real magic of the diet for me. For the first time in my life, I ever could recognize not being hungry or looking forward to or planning my next meal after just eating my last.
a question: if u dont feel the need to eat, should you force urself to do it after 6 hours? i have 2 meals max on atkins, and am on day 10 into the induction.
It depends. If you are successful and eat enough food in those two meals, I don't see where you are going wrong. If you are constantly hungry or go into starvation mode, then I would see eat more.
another question Bowulf.. i remember that you adviced fat burners, those have cafiene.. any conflcit?? i was drinking lot of green tea during my induction (day10).. i hope i didnt screw it up.. wt do u think?
Actually I am against diet pills, but if you are talking about CoQ-10 and L-Carnitine. Those do not have caffeine. As for whether or not caffeine is allowed, it is a your mileage may vary thing. I find it helpful to eliminate my caffeine addiction, but some people are successful without doing it.
ok im really paranoid that once im at my goal weight ill put all my weight back on! ive read all i could about doing this diet and once i hit my weight goal i dont want all my time and effort to go out the window. what do i do after i reach my goal? someone told me all im going to loose is water? why everyone is so negative with this diet.
Read the book about what you as you progress through the later stages of the diet. Induction only has to be the first 14 days. You are intended to progress through the carb rungs and gradually add food and more carbs back into the diet. At the end in maintenance mode, you may be eating 100-150 carbs per day. If you learned these lessons, you will NOT gain the weight back.
Why do people fail? They stay at Induction level carbs the entire time, and then increase after they hit goal.
Don't follow in their mistakes. This is lifelong change in the eating pattern, but that doesn't mean Induction is lifelong.
Did I really lose just 211 pounds of water? Hardly. The initial weight loss (first 3-6 days) is a lot of water as the glycogen stores are eliminated, but after that this diet loses the most fat and least lean mass of any diet.
As to the negativity, a lot of people don't understand the diet. It also challenges their low fat mentality to weightloss by relying on fat.
In the U.S. according to the FDA website, the sugars are already counted in the carbohydrate totals as are the fiber grams. Adding the sugar grams (subtotal) again would be double counting them in the total. In other countries, such as U.K., I believe they are extracted out of the nutritional facts label like you said.
thank u i have just one more quetion i stopped exercising an hour every day instead i do 1 hour one day 30 minutes the next and so on but im also doing weights is that bad ??? because i seemed to have gained 7 pounds? but my close are looser what is going on? thanx
How long has that 7 pounds been on? I think your exercising should be fine. Chances are just different hydration levels if the weight gain is temporary. The muscles are rebuilding themselves and that requires additional water temporarily.
So the only change was the exercise length and the addition of resistance training? No new foods in the diet? Still drinking your water (64+ oz)? Was it overnight or a gradual gain?
Then I remain convinced given no other changes, it is simply water weight gain -- probably due to the resistance training. I know it's frustrating and discouraging, but the good news it's temporary. Yes, 4 days doesn't seem temporary, but in the long run even by Induction standards, it is.
Give it time, and don't get too discouraged. If you feel you *must* do something, do a extra 15 minutes of cardio OR increase the intensity of your cardio. What are you doing for cardio workout?
Oh my god!! I have just wasted my time and money on the Atkins book, when I could have the diet explained easier by watching this video and by someone who has done the diet themselves!! It's Brilliant!! Many Thanks.
Thank you! I have realized everything I was doing wrong! So grateful to come across your videos, I will use you as my Atkins inspiration and video coach!
Check out the Acceptable foods video that I have for Induction. Snow peas and green beans are fine. Corn is considered a grain and off the plan until the later rungs of OWL phase.
Your story is very inspiring. I think I will use my YouTube to keep track of my weight loss. Low carb works best for me...I've been doing a not-so-strict version for 4 days now. I have noticed a difference, but I'm going to buckle down tighter and go hard on Induction for two weeks.
i noticed this video is from 2 years ago... how is ur atkins diet goin... i am on day 4 and i am feelin a little low... but the weight loss keepin me goin.... i am just desperate for a sweet snack
I am still going great in Maintenance. I eat about 30-40g of Carbs per day. I am running marathons and doing a pretty grueling P90x workout sessions. I am also still near my goal weight of 225. You are going through Induction flu (watch that video). You can do this -- the low feeling only lasts a few more days...
You can overdo water, but normal people generally stop well before water intoxication or hypotremia sets in. For those who aren't profusely sweating (marathon runners) and might have electrolyte problems, drinking 100-200 oz per day should not be a problem. The kidneys can handle about 300-400 oz per day.
Watch my other videos and learn about water weight and the importance of exercise... You can't go from 42.5% Body Fat to 11-12% Body Fat just on losing water alone.
Funny I haven't seen any reports of Jared running a marathon. Why would I want to give Subway half my salary just to make me eat more processed foods and cold cuts?
I am glad you like them, and that they are beneficial to you. You however are doing the hard work, and reaping the rewards according to your other post. Good job!
great video! what do you think about low-carb smoothies (for example, from smoothie king) during induction? i got online and read the nutrition facts, seemed acceptable but not sure...
While some people follow a no carb or no veggie eating plan, I would encourage you to eat the vegetables. I was much the same as you when I first started, but you'd be surprised at how your taste buds change. Things that were dreadful before, I now like, such as cabbage.
ok u r getting me motivated!!!

I accidentally had milk in tea on phase 1. Does that completely ruin my progress? Am I thrown off ketosis?
Peiazjaeh 6 months ago
@Peiazjaeh You didn't completely ruin your progress, but you have to figure out how it happened. If it was just an accident that you couldn't have avoided, then just pick up where you are. If you subcombed to a craving, then I would suggest you do 14 days of Induction again. Check out my "I cheated. What now? video for more information.
bowulf 6 months ago
@bowulf Thanks SO much for responding!!! it was an accident, but I'm only on day 2/3. I'm planning on restarting anyway, because I miscalculated (according to myplate) and I had 60 g of carbs instead of 20-.
I have two questions
1.can you still (somehow) go into ketosis while eating over 20 g per day? (I know it's not the rule, but I'm curious about how it works) (p.s I just bought the book)
2. Is there a way to "cancel out" too many carbs? Like today, can I "cancel" out 40 carbs by eating a
Peiazjaeh 6 months ago
@Peiazjaeh 1. yes, you can go into ketosis if you eat over 20g. Ketogenic diets are generally 65% Fat and less than 40-50g per day. I believe 20g was the safe figure to guarantee everyone would start on the right foot.
2. Yes and no. Yes, if you immediately start working out, you could counteract the effects a little; however, in my head that's a bit like bulimia. Except instead of purging, you exercise like crazy. I would take the lump as a lesson for next time.
bowulf 6 months ago
Respond to this video... eating a whole ton of celery and fiber?
3. (sorry 1 more question) Does exercising affect your rate of ketosis? If I eat a good amount of calories but then exersise a bunch, will that make myb body unwilling to go into ketosis?
THANK YOU so much.
I'm so glad I leared about this "diet/lifestyle" because it's really something amazing.
(p.s I only have about 20 to 15 lbs. to loose but... I wonder if it's easier to go into ketosis if you are heavier or lighter)
Peiazjaeh 6 months ago
@Peiazjaeh Remember we are focusing long term not just get the weight off quick. In that manner the rate of ketosis should mean less than eating right and learning your body's relationship to food again. As for exercise, it can help, but I generally say give your body a chance in the first 2-3 weeks to adapt to the diet first and get acclimated, and then resume exercising.
bowulf 6 months ago
@bowulf Thank you, this really clears a lot of things up for me. I'm in the process of reading the book and it's excellent.
It really helps that you take the time to answer questions, I'm sure everyone really appreciates it!

hey im starting induction today, im 14 and weigh 170 lbs. i want to get down to 130 by the end of the summer i workout daily, is that achivable?
MySummerChallenge 7 months ago
@MySummerChallenge Check out my video for how much will I lose on Induction where I talk about this question. The short answer is almost anything is achievable, but what if you get to 135 or 140 is that a failure? You'll likely be much more healthy than today, and eat a lot better.
bowulf 7 months ago
What about onion and tomatos? for induction
jerrysmith29 1 year ago
@jerrysmith29 Yes both are fine 1 cup per day veggie. Check out my "Can I eat this on Induction?" video for the complete list of Acceptable Indcution foods in the link in the video description.
bowulf 1 year ago
HA I think I see what I'm doing wrong on induction, 1 month 1 day into it....not enough water (drinking close to 1 gallon a day) and possibly not measuring the veggies right. Are we supposed to measure veggies before or after cooking them? And maybe not enough meats or food in general. I went from vegetarian/vegan to Atkins. Also I was told that I could eat the dressing with sugar (Ken's blue cheese with 1g) but maybe this is making me stall. Do you make your own dressings bo? Mayo and salad?
cind311 1 year ago
@cind311 You should typically measure or estimate before cooking with veggies -- especially those that wilt (cabbage, spinach) Watch my portion size video where I demonstrate estimating the amounts because honestly I didn't actually measure much.
I'll leave the question of stalling to the other reply, but in case you are seeing slower weight loss this week than your initial weeks, check out my Post Induction Stall syndrome video. It's normal. For salad dressings, I mainly eat Caesar dressing.
bowulf 1 year ago
cind311 1 year ago
@cind311 I am partial to giving up the bars. Your menus look great other than that. I honestly think you are simply in Post Induction Stall (check the video for more info), and your body is preparing to drop the water very shortly.
bowulf 1 year ago
I use Whey Protein as long as it is 1 to 2 carbs. Make sure you read the serving size, carbs and sugar in it.
MsMusclechick 1 year ago
Hi Kent,
Here is a question of mine and one future video suggestion if you are open to do such a thing:
First, which book did you follow to loose your weight?
For a suggestion I am wondering if it would be possible to have a futre video that shows proportions of induction foods. Such as what does 2-3 cups of veggies loosely packed looks like in a measuring cup to a plate. I think incorrect proportions are probably my biggest mistake than eating the wrong foods.
jmarek123 1 year ago
@jmarek123 I follow the 2002 version of the DANDR.
Your idea (making a video on portion sizes) is actually on my list of things to do. I don't think it is realistic for most people to measure all their foods, so visually measuring things is how most people count carbs. I was going to take pictures of each portion size, so people can estimate appropriately.
bowulf 1 year ago
Hi Kent,
I have been watching your videos for quite some time now. I've read the book and find these videos to be very helpful to reiterate what I have already learned to help keep me on track.
Thanks very much for sharing your experience and giving people the tools in an easier to digest format.
jmarek123 1 year ago
@jmarek123 You are welcome. I think the books do an excellent job and are the best starting place, but I know what you mean about sometimes it is sometimes easier to understand visually.

hi im looking for some vegetarian help.
Thanks
Teddykinso 1 year ago
@Teddykinso Wish I could help, I am new to this too. I think the point is to go 0g sugar, this is why you should be careful when using anything with sugars, starches, or other "hidden" sugars. I was told I could do 1g sugar in the mayo or dressing I use but this might be why I am stalling! The vegetarian Atkins is very hard to do, I abandoned it before I even started!
cind311 1 year ago
Dude you rock!
Thanks for having these videos available.

Check out the "Induction is more than 20g or less," as it explains it better.

thanx
nidhitripathy 1 year ago
@nidhitripathy Check out my "I cheated, what should I do?" video for a better, longer answer.
The short answer is if you ate it because you thought it was legal, and later found out differently, then take it as a lesson to committing yourself to finding out first before eating anything. You can probably then continue where you are at. If you knew it wasn't legal and ate anyhow due to cravings, then I would suggest restarting Induction.
bowulf 1 year ago
you said the point of the induction phase is to get your body used to burning fat for fuel. But wouldn't it be simpler to just do more cardio? cardio burns fat for fuel
Chaaarge 1 year ago
@Chaaarge You could achieve the burning exclusively fat for fuel by running, BUT you would need to run approximately 20 miles. That's the point in which your body has burned all the remaining glycogen in the body. Running 20 miles each day to rid yourself of carbohydrates to normalize blood sugar is not possible for 99.999% of people.
Simply burning fat for fuel is not the same as burning fat exclusively for fuel.

I like to chew a lot of gum and most of them have 1gm or 2 or even 3 grams of carbs, do you know of any with zero? THANKS!!!!
bcast25 1 year ago
Sorry the gum thing is one I don't know. I have never been a gum chewer, so I just don't know. AtkinsDietbulletinboard would be the place I would go to ask that question.
bowulf 1 year ago
There is NOTHING wrong with gum. Chew a sugarless gum. There's nothing wrong with carbs. Enjoy all the fruits and vegetables you desire. It's impossible to overeat on them because they're such water dense bulky high fiber low calorie foods by nature. And of course that's the whole idea..get as close to nature as possible. Eat the foods from the good earth as they come. Enjoy natural grains and brown rice, put some low fat yogurt and vegetables in that and sprinkle on some olive oil. Sound good?
brushfour 1 year ago
"Eat the foods from the good earth as they come."
Lots of things come from the earth. How about arsenic? Have some sense and regulate what crap you put in your body? What is funny is that you end up recommending "low fat yogurt " in your next sentence. What earth does that come from, and how much processing is necessary to achieve it being low fat?
You make this too easy...

Also whats your intake about the Crystal Lite Green tea ?
TheTruthSpeaksNow 2 years ago
Check the ingredients for the Crystal Lite Green Tea. Aspartame is generally discouraged on Atkins, but some have no problem with it. I try to minimize my intake to almost none. Either way though, you are limited to three servings per day of artificially sweetened items.
bowulf 2 years ago
ok listen ....
TheTruthSpeaksNow 2 years ago
The crackers are obviously loaded with refined starches (flour), so I would not have them. For Pork Rinds, as long as they have no added sugars or starches in the ingredients, you can have as many as it takes to make you feel full. The dip has the same caution - look for sugars and starches in the ingredients. If it has them, you will want to make your own out of sour cream.
bowulf 2 years ago
Heya:) I am on atkins and am five days into induction, but even though I havent eaten anything apart from eggs and meats and cheese I feel like I need the diet coke and have tea around 3 times a week. I have a can everyday. And have already lost 2-3lbs in 5 days. how often can I have a can? Oh and also can I have diet sodas without caffiene in them instead?
andypandy1995 2 years ago
Keep in mind you should be eating 2-3 cups of vegetables per day even on Induction. Making Atkins a zero carb or near zero carb diet does not make it more successful. It usually leads to these cravings or "needs." The cautions against caffeine and aspartame are just that. Some people can lose while having them but others can not.
In either case you should limit ALL artificially sweetened items to 3 total servings per day.
bowulf 2 years ago
I used to have lots of tea with sugar and caffeine in my diet. Is it easier to not give up both should I allow myself SOME caffeine? Or is it better to go cold turkey from sugar and caffeine.
ledgebox 2 years ago
Some people do fine on some caffeine. I personally had no middle ground and had to give up both completely. My wife however still keeps her habit to a minimum and still loses well. It's really a YMMV thing.

violinist881 2 years ago
As much as I would like to lay another curse at the feet of diet sodas, I don't think I can with constipation. At least I have never heard of that link. I am not saying it couldn't exist, but it isn't as likely. Artificial Sweeteners can cause the opposite problem though.

violinist881 2 years ago
Ask and you shall receive - check out my Atkins Diet and Consitipation (google it or search here). You'll see my recommendation of ground flax meal. I grind my own seeds in a coffee grinder. Certainly a portion was water lost, but in 2 weeks, you also were burning fat as well.

ALipStickTomboy 2 years ago
If you follow the diet as prescribed, you will be burning fat for fuel and you will lose more fat as opposed to lean body mass than on any other way of eating. Can you overeat on this diet and gain weight? Sure, but it's really difficult to do. The body naturally suppresses hunger when you are in ketosis, and you stop eating when you aren't hungry.
bowulf 2 years ago
i am a 19 yr old mother of 2 and it is so hard for me to loos the weight as i was watching your videos i can see that i over eat and dont even know it i came from 120 to 170lbs do you really think i can loss the fat?
marionshaw 2 years ago
Absolutely you can lose... I am convinced that once people start regulating their blood sugar and get into ketosis that they set themselves up for big losses in the future. It is just a matter of following the plan as written.
bowulf 2 years ago
If you do it right, you will lose fat and reduce your body fat percentage. Without the presence of carbs, the production is reduced or eliminated, and fat can't be stored on the body without insulin.
bowulf 2 years ago
I believe you. I ahve to be honest, in the small meals I am eating, I am FULL. Literally, having to make myself eat. lol It is weird but kiinda cool. I was so hungry on carbs...this diet may become my way of life. Yesterday all I had was 2 eggs, 6 oz of salmon. Lunch, burger, small salad. Dinner, small buger. I was STUFFED. Today I have no appetite. So I am cooking a slew of chicken legs and a turkey and will just keep it on hand to nibble on. And a gallon of water a day.

LanyLooLoo 2 years ago
You can stay on Extended Induction well past the 14 days, but your ratios should stay about the same. Otherwise you are moving to more of high protein diet than high fat diet. Check out my video on high fat vs high protein on why high protein low fat is not as desirable.
Remember you are eating until you are satiated that may change during the diet, and that you do indeed need to fuel your body with something. Too low Calories can impede weight loss.

weezerchic78 3 years ago
If you look through my past videos, you'll see the skeptics posting on my videos, and you'll see my responses. There are generally two tacts - those that are curious and misinformed, who you can correct with the science and studies, and those that are so engrained in their dietary fat is the devil and with these you simply ignore. Then you rub your success in their face when you hit goal. :-D

If that was all you were eating and drinking for the day, then yes that is what could be happen. If you are not eating at least your BMR routinely, your body can enter starvation mode.

How do you eat till you're hungry? Don't you mean eat till you're satisfied?
te7as6b 3 years ago
I am not sure from what point you are talking about, but the goal is to eat until you are not hungry any longer. If I misspoke, that is what I meant. A person should let his hunger determine if he should be eating or not. If you are hungry, eat, and if not, don't.
That is the real magic of the diet for me. For the first time in my life, I ever could recognize not being hungry or looking forward to or planning my next meal after just eating my last.

Rida5d 3 years ago
Actually I am against diet pills, but if you are talking about CoQ-10 and L-Carnitine. Those do not have caffeine. As for whether or not caffeine is allowed, it is a your mileage may vary thing. I find it helpful to eliminate my caffeine addiction, but some people are successful without doing it.

thank u sir...
keep up the good work,, you are my the best :)

ok im really paranoid that once im at my goal weight ill put all my weight back on! ive read all i could about doing this diet and once i hit my weight goal i dont want all my time and effort to go out the window. what do i do after i reach my goal? someone told me all im going to loose is water? why everyone is so negative with this diet.
chlsfer 3 years ago
Read the book about what you as you progress through the later stages of the diet. Induction only has to be the first 14 days. You are intended to progress through the carb rungs and gradually add food and more carbs back into the diet. At the end in maintenance mode, you may be eating 100-150 carbs per day. If you learned these lessons, you will NOT gain the weight back.
Why do people fail? They stay at Induction level carbs the entire time, and then increase after they hit goal.
bowulf 3 years ago
Don't follow in their mistakes. This is lifelong change in the eating pattern, but that doesn't mean Induction is lifelong.
Did I really lose just 211 pounds of water? Hardly. The initial weight loss (first 3-6 days) is a lot of water as the glycogen stores are eliminated, but after that this diet loses the most fat and least lean mass of any diet.
As to the negativity, a lot of people don't understand the diet. It also challenges their low fat mentality to weightloss by relying on fat.

Don't forget the sugars
CARBS - FIBER + SUGARS = NET CARBS
aperfectingangel 3 years ago
In the U.S. according to the FDA website, the sugars are already counted in the carbohydrate totals as are the fiber grams. Adding the sugar grams (subtotal) again would be double counting them in the total. In other countries, such as U.K., I believe they are extracted out of the nutritional facts label like you said.

oh ok! I didn't know that thank you!!! wow I feel better now about what I ate today LOL
aperfectingangel 3 years ago
thank u i have just one more quetion i stopped exercising an hour every day instead i do 1 hour one day 30 minutes the next and so on but im also doing weights is that bad ??? because i seemed to have gained 7 pounds? but my close are looser what is going on? thanx
lawestsider12 3 years ago
How long has that 7 pounds been on? I think your exercising should be fine. Chances are just different hydration levels if the weight gain is temporary. The muscles are rebuilding themselves and that requires additional water temporarily.
bowulf 3 years ago
they have been on about 4 days now ;(
lawestsider12 3 years ago
So the only change was the exercise length and the addition of resistance training? No new foods in the diet? Still drinking your water (64+ oz)? Was it overnight or a gradual gain?
bowulf 3 years ago
yes im still drinking lots of water and it was kind of overnight ????
lawestsider12 3 years ago
Then I remain convinced given no other changes, it is simply water weight gain -- probably due to the resistance training. I know it's frustrating and discouraging, but the good news it's temporary. Yes, 4 days doesn't seem temporary, but in the long run even by Induction standards, it is.
Give it time, and don't get too discouraged. If you feel you *must* do something, do a extra 15 minutes of cardio OR increase the intensity of your cardio. What are you doing for cardio workout?
bowulf 3 years ago
Oh my god!! I have just wasted my time and money on the Atkins book, when I could have the diet explained easier by watching this video and by someone who has done the diet themselves!! It's Brilliant!! Many Thanks.

Hey I try. :-D I am glad you liked the videos!

I believe it is also hosted at Google Video.

can u replace the meat with seafood? it is a protein
goldengoodas 3 years ago
Most seafood is good. There are only a few of them (like some shellfish) that are a bit higher in carbs.
bowulf 3 years ago
I had a question, on the atkins diet, during induction, are you allowed to eat things such as (canned) peas, green beans, or corn?
cabman1987 3 years ago
Check out the Acceptable foods video that I have for Induction. Snow peas and green beans are fine. Corn is considered a grain and off the plan until the later rungs of OWL phase.
bowulf 3 years ago
Your story is very inspiring. I think I will use my YouTube to keep track of my weight loss. Low carb works best for me...I've been doing a not-so-strict version for 4 days now. I have noticed a difference, but I'm going to buckle down tighter and go hard on Induction for two weeks.
CrystalHoney01 3 years ago
i noticed this video is from 2 years ago... how is ur atkins diet goin... i am on day 4 and i am feelin a little low... but the weight loss keepin me goin.... i am just desperate for a sweet snack
roxannemcbride 3 years ago
I am still going great in Maintenance. I eat about 30-40g of Carbs per day. I am running marathons and doing a pretty grueling P90x workout sessions. I am also still near my goal weight of 225. You are going through Induction flu (watch that video). You can do this -- the low feeling only lasts a few more days...
bowulf 3 years ago
I KNOW THIS IS SUCH A STUPID q BUT CAN I DRINK AS MUCH WATER AS I WANT OR IS THERE A LIMIT.
roxannemcbride 3 years ago
You can overdo water, but normal people generally stop well before water intoxication or hypotremia sets in. For those who aren't profusely sweating (marathon runners) and might have electrolyte problems, drinking 100-200 oz per day should not be a problem. The kidneys can handle about 300-400 oz per day.
bowulf 3 years ago
is it true that with Atkins all the fat goes to the blood and becomes contaminated?
pitoboloco 3 years ago
No.

This is great! thank you so much!

try exercise to keep your water weight.
melovetorun 4 years ago
Watch my other videos and learn about water weight and the importance of exercise... You can't go from 42.5% Body Fat to 11-12% Body Fat just on losing water alone.
bowulf 4 years ago
Jared did it by eating subs and Butters did it by Chinease food.
melovetorun 4 years ago
Funny I haven't seen any reports of Jared running a marathon. Why would I want to give Subway half my salary just to make me eat more processed foods and cold cuts?
bowulf 4 years ago
very informative. i never stopped drinking tea now i feel much better knowing that i was doing it wrong. thanks heaps

great video! what do you think about low-carb smoothies (for example, from smoothie king) during induction? i got online and read the nutrition facts, seemed acceptable but not sure...
mooncakemary 4 years ago
thx for the info!! :)
beba1123 4 years ago
I am doing the induction but I hate veggies. Is it possible not to eat veggies doing atkins?
kleyann 4 years ago
While some people follow a no carb or no veggie eating plan, I would encourage you to eat the vegetables. I was much the same as you when I first started, but you'd be surprised at how your taste buds change. Things that were dreadful before, I now like, such as cabbage.
