The Jaguar was available as an installation for nightclubs i'd assume this feature is left in from that.

What happened to your Jag?
I'm a huge fan of Jeff Minter's work too, in my opinion it's VLM and Tempest 2000 that stand out as the best examples on the Jaguar platform.
