Its actually a maternal behaviour. The rat, when she sees the tail, stimulates a retrieving behaviour as if the tail is a baby. It might be related to a false pregnancy or your rat was pregnant :o
Actually, from what I read, a rat carrying it's tail (female of course) is said to do it out of maternal instinct or act or whatever you want to call it.
About the other rats trying to chew the tumor off: In my experience, rats are excellent surgeons. The first two rats I owned were both females. One developed a tumor on her throat and I had an appointment to have it removed. About 4 days before, her cage mate had removed the tumor and left nothing but a tiny dot where she cut into the skin. The tumor grew back and again was chewed out. similar things have happened with other rats. I fully trust them to remove tumors and have never had problems.
My hanser, Sammy, past away Dec 14 2011-she was only a year and half. I never thought a hamster would bring so much joy in my life. RIP Sammy I miss you
She is so adorable, my boy does the same thing on rare occasions. I am sorry for your loss. I have been through many "groups" during my 12 years of raising rats and I know it hurts every time. Ignore the idiots because all of us rat parents know how it is.
i loveyour rat!! im sorry for your lost. some people think rats are disgusting but there amazing friends to have. the simplest things my rats do I will never forget.<3
I had a rat with mammary tumors and she lived to be about 3 too before I had her put down. Spaying almost eliminates the occurrence of mammary tumors but it's such an invasive procedure for such a small creature. I wish it were the other way around and neutering was more important since it is much less invasive...
Anyway, I had a rat do this once and I know she did it because she was bored, but you can't always keep them entertained 24/7 so people are just ignorant.
Just to get the word out, I own my very own rat Sanctuary, if any rat needs a home, contact me! I am located in Herriman, Utah, in the Salt Lake Valley. All i require is for you to come to me! Drop offs are accepted!
Awwww, what a cutie. I'm sorry to hear about her tumor though, but it's amazing she lived that long with one. My little boy was put to sleep because of a second tumor showing up only a week or two after a huge one was removed. It can be sad, but we had to keep him alone too... But I look at it as getting more play time because you 'have' to play with them more lol
we had a rat once that couldn't be kept with others. He was kept alone at a pet store and was terrified of and aggressive with other rats and people. It does happen sometimes that for a variety of reasons some rats need to be kept alone.
@marieswisher98 I thought she did it because she is bored.... Unfortunatly I don't see any ratty friends on the video. I don't see hammocks, a nice cage to climb etc.. (I think glass cages are so sad!)
my rat sugar was albino and she had what im guessing was a tumor and she passed away not that long ago and she was about 5 or 6 yrs old i miss her so much she loved to give kisses
I used to have a rat called Rhea who loved jumping on my dogs back and hitching a ride all over the house she loved it lol they are lovely pets affectionate and clean. although people think they are smelly dirty rodents pet rats hate their living areas being dirty and they love nothing more than to be kept clean. She was adorable and lived for 4 yrs we still miss her ..
I know exactly how you feel, my rat just will not accept company. Don't know what it is, she is extremely territorial. Even when I'm cleaning out her cage and moving around her bed she gets grumpy. When she's out of her cage she is usually pretty laid back though, but anything she considers hers is off limits. :P But that's just the way some rats are, it's the same with all animals. You're not a bad rat parent. :)
Had a miniature rabbit that lived 10 years... I've heard their avarage is 8 actually. And she died from lungs tumor as well :< (Creeping in dust under sofa isn't healthy...)
@doggieyo Same..... :P What a cute rat I currently own a brand new 6 week old baby girl rat called Luna. She's a little out of it like the luna character in Harry potter hence the name.
One of my current rats is named Harry. When he was born, the marking on his back looked looked like a lightening bolt though it doesn't anymore since his fur grew out. xP
@Pireox WOW! that's old!...I am getting one soon!... Hopefully tommorow..I want it kinda of young so i will have it for a while .. :) I will make a video of him or her when i get one!..
my rat did that! then she took my other rat, misty(rip =-((()'s tail, and tried to put it in the little house. she'd grab her own tail and try to put it in the huse. it was SOOO funny!
You're NOT a bad rat owner! I've had many rats and, unfortunately, they tend to be susceptible to various anomalies in their unfortunately short lives.
My girlfriend's rat lived for about 1,5 year. She died when we went for a summer vacation trip and her parents had been taking care of her at the time. Anyway, she also was a smart rat. She could open her cage without any problems and took off sometimes around my gf's room, haha. Anyway, that rat of yours is quite funny there, she rolled around the cage and rolled into her house. What a brilliant idea to finish the video! :)
OMG! I have had five rats total over the past couple years, and currently have three (RIP Mr. Fuzzles and Squit) and I have never seen any of them do this! It is too cute!
Its sad the fact you have to explain your self to people about why she was alone, etc.
As you can see from the video she is one happy rattie. I have one one her own at the moment but thats because she lost her sisters and ive never seen her so happy, shes got the run of the house..!!!
i think she just needed more toys and stuff to climb shes a gorgouse looking rat myt i add i have 4 males from two diffeent litters and they get on like a house on fire but i do understand that some rats prefer ther own company, try buying rats of the same litter that way they get on very well as they have lived with one another since birth, tis a shame when a rat is on its own but sometimes theres nothing you can do lol .
im a kid and i feel so bad for you and your not a bad rat ower and your is so cute so i think you know hoow you feel about her some of my fish died and i feed them but they just die well i dont know why your rat lola is chaseing her tail and my mom name is melissa and im her daughter sara and im 8 and i love animals
This is the maternal instinct...the rat grabs her tail and carries it like a baby.
Cute. Hope she gets out of that tiny cage and has at least one room mate. Rats are very social. On the average they live only between 2-3 years. Have heard some lived to 5 but never seen any much older than 3 years. Respiratory infections & heart problems very common as are tumors.
Don't listen to people who start in with the whole "a single rat will die of depression" shpeel. They don't know what it's like to have a rat that can't live with others. My George is extremely territorial and I have tried putting him with a pair that I already had and it didn't work out, so I got him Wilbur, who's very friendly with other rats, and he hated him too. Sometimes you have to separate rats, it isn't ideal, but it happens. Anyways, very cute video. My Wilbur thinks he's a dog too. :)
@doggieyo I know where you stand :) I have one female pet rat that just won't go well with other rats. Even together with the sweetest rat ever.. I just hate when people tell me I'm a bad rattie mommy just cause she is on her own...
I also have a pet rat. It may(sorry) She really could be bored. Rats should be kept in a tall wire cage that they can climb on without being hurt. Lol i buy my rats little bird toys so they can rest at the top of the cage. I'm really sorry she died. My Guinea pig died the same way.
@ELFuriouss Rat's living to be 3 or more years of age is not rare. I've also heard of a few people having rats live to be 5 years old including myself (he had just turned 5 before passing away). Females of course sadly tend to have shorter lives than males do... so I suppose if you've only owned female rats, you'd believe them to have a shorter life expectancy than what is average for both genders.
Lola is ADORABLE! I have a 2 year old rat named Twila. Her sister died last year. Her sisters name was twinkles. Before I had them I also had another female rat named dolly. I wish they lived forever. They are such gentle creatures, but in afraid twila is my last one. School is very important and it is hard for me to handle a pet and school work. Im ver happy that Lola had a good life. :)
"hmm.. what is this long thing following me?" "Alright I've got ya! Ha-Ha, Oh darn! it escaped" "..lets try turning around this way..FOUND YOU" "eh..eh, ha ha! i've got the prey!" now lets go off into the dark area over there where nobody will see us. . . mwuahahha
@missyjade83 You're forgetting that they're also cleaner than dogs. They don't go outside and track germs into the house. My dog definitely stinks more than my rats. lol
If you want to keep calling me a bad rat owner for not letting another rat chew her up OR letting her become snake food then you go right ahead. I have many rats, all being kept with buddies. This was an issue that required her to be alone. She had tons of attention outside her cage, I even let her visit some of my other females under supervision. If she was bored then she was bored this once because she never did this again and I've never had another rat chase it's tail either.
@doggieyo Hey i have one rat Her name is Daisy may and she is my only one her bestie died her name was ivy she had a tumor i loved both of my rats but when ivy i coulnt take it so i didnt get daisy another friend people have called me a bad rat owner and u know what i do what i think is better for my rat daisy is healthy happy and has plenty of love so who care what other people think they dont know ur own personal rat!!!
@doggieyo Don't listen to them, they are always saying that kind of sh¡t... All you say and all you do will be bad for them. Just ignore them and enjoy your pet. Mine does the same =D
Oh my goodness you guys, lay off all the "THIS IS HOW YOU HAVE TO RAISE YOUR RAT" talk. She was simply posting a really cute video of her rat chasing it's tail, which being a rat owner for the last 15 years have never personally seen. So kudos to you! Everyone should just chill. If you're that worried about it, go take down some pet shops treating their rats wrong. I can name a few.
Totally normal behavior. My rat used to do it all the time, even when he was out and laying on my chest. Suddenly he'd jump up and start chasing his tail. I think he just liked to hear me laugh abou it.
Unfortunately, this looks like frustration and unnatural behaviour because the rat is held by itself. Rats need same species companions for their well being and to be able to display their wide range of social behaviours.
Please watch the very cute and informative video on Youtube of two rats entitled:
@68Chargergirl Thanks for the information but I already know that rats like to be kept together which is why all of my current rats are. Please read the video despcription for more information on why this peticular rat was alone. Thanks. :]
@68Chargergirl I house Some of my rats alone, but not because im a bad rat owner, But because when i bought them as feeders they were bought alone and most of my rats didnt like sharing cages and tryed fighting to the death. That doesnt meen there lonely, I let my rats socialize with eachother, i keep only Two together that were bought together. She is not a bad rat owner. Rats sometimes just have strange habbits. you can even watch my vid on my channel my rats

Females of course sadly tend to have shorter lives than males do... so I suppose if you've only owned female rats, you'd believe them to have a shorter life expectancy than what is average for both genders.

@ELFuriouss Yes it's possible. I've actually known a rat who lived 6.. AMAZING I know

Rats are as intelligent as dogs, they are low matinence, and they are funny sweet cut and friendly
missyjade83 9 months ago
@missyjade83 You're forgetting that they're also cleaner than dogs. They don't go outside and track germs into the house. My dog definitely stinks more than my rats. lol
ilovegnomeland 9 months ago
@ilovegnomeland Yeah anyone who think rats are "dirty" they clean themselves more than a cat does, so they have very good hygiene.

@doggieyo The only bad thing i have to say is a glass tank is a bad idea, then again its not a bad thing to say, its just a bit of advice.
ItsMsAshleigh 10 months ago

My female rat looked just like this one, and she had a huge tumour on her leg. I had her put down. It was terrible... >.< RIP!

Totally normal behavior. My rat used to do it all the time, even when he was out and laying on my chest. Suddenly he'd jump up and start chasing his tail. I think he just liked to hear me laugh abou it.

@doggieyo I read it later. Sorry for my too quick a response.

have you checked her for mites ? :D
666TheDevilRocks666 11 months ago
Unfortunately, this looks like frustration and unnatural behaviour because the rat is held by itself. Rats need same species companions for their well being and to be able to display their wide range of social behaviours.
Please watch the very cute and informative video on Youtube of two rats entitled:
Pet rats - why it's important to have two or more
Enjoy!

@68Chargergirl Thanks for the information but I already know that rats like to be kept together which is why all of my current rats are. Please read the video despcription for more information on why this peticular rat was alone. Thanks. :]
doggieyo 11 months ago 8
@68Chargergirl I house Some of my rats alone, but not because im a bad rat owner, But because when i bought them as feeders they were bought alone and most of my rats didnt like sharing cages and tryed fighting to the death. That doesnt meen there lonely, I let my rats socialize with eachother, i keep only Two together that were bought together. She is not a bad rat owner. Rats sometimes just have strange habbits. you can even watch my vid on my channel my rats
