Here in Alabama when you hear a siren like that everyone would hit there tornado safe rooms. we have the Minitor 5's and also 2-way radios with PL tones and everyone carries them. it's cool how some other areas still use the Sirens to notify the firefighters to respond. awesome video
I've seen a Federal Model 5, but not on a pole like this one. The Federal Model 5 I saw was on a pole between two poles right behind a store up Lycoming Creek near Old Lycoming Township. I used to hear a 6:00 siren test, and I don't mean six minute siren test. The siren test started at 6:00 every Monday evening, and the sirens heard were sounded for one minute exactly. Sirens heard were a classic STH-10 and a 3T22, the STH-10 did Attack while the 3T22 did Alternate Wail.
The air horn was the classic way to alert volunteers of an incoming call back probably during the 1930s, 1940s, 1950s and 1960s into the 1970s. Then came fire sirens, the sirens you still hear today from up to a mile and a half away from the fire station where the siren is located. My hometown has an STH-10 fire siren, Erick fire siren, and a diaphone. Anybody got any idea on what the diaphone at fire station 10 is? I'm used to the horn, but the type is unknown. Help me find out the type.
I love all these smart ass comments from you idiots about how long it takes for them to respond. Really!? The video is 2 min long! Not every firefighter lives next door to the fire station, some people have to drive a couple miles to get to the station. Get real people, it's not uncommon for a volunteer dept to take up to 6, 7, 8 maybe 10 min if it's during the day to go, and they do just as good of a job as paid dept who are out the door in 2min.
@fireman1 where i'm at the time when your tested and what is stated in code is 2 min for volly station most paid will be out in less than a min. i know that it can take upwards to ten min and i'm not sayin anything bout a bad response time they actually did really good
Also our members work for a living and are not sitting around on there ass collecting welfare and waiting on fire calls like most of yours are. Just a fact that was held to one room. Since I have been withe the department, 7 years, we have lost one place and it was a trailer. Correct me if I am wrong, but that is better than most. For those of you that think different, we are taking new members. Come on down and show us how to do it better if you can.
For anyone that was paying any attention at all, the video was under three minutes and our responce for this call was three minutes. Since you are unable to see the rear of the firehouse, you are unable to see the members coming in to man the rigs. Yes responce time is a little slow, but we live in the country and it take time to get to the firehouse. See our members follow blue light laws and don't run people off the road so they can make it to the firehouse a minute or two faster. Also our me
Years ago, I lived in Cleveland, MS which had an all volunteer fire department...and an insurance class 5 rating. Needless to say, they were on the move. They had pagers as well as overheads...two were Thunderbolts...the others some ancient relics...One day there was a stove fire just down the street...within 45 seconds of the sirens activation, the first volunteer passed the house...within a minute and a half, the firs truck was on scene...less than three minutes later, the second truck arrived
i am a retired volunteer, and we had to stop using our siren for calls, cuz neighbors didnt want the noise pollution, sure as in the hell made our response times slower, not getting thru traffic etc
My dad told me this story about my uncle being a volenteer fireman, he told me when ever the siren went off, he remembers my uncle runnin down to the fire station in his underwear tryin to get to the fire house! great vid
I wish the heck they'd do away with pagers! Darn it....I *like* the sound of that! They haven't used ours in 25 years. They've all gone to those #&%$ pagers. :(
-Probably the city kids that moved in the area couldn't stand the noise. *giggle*
Just don't take this away! I LOVE to listen to this whenever I get lonely for ours the way it used to sound. So many sound a bit different, and I can't believe I was able to find one here that sounds literally, EXACTLY how ours does (or at least did)!
@hondamagnaperformanc Hey, actually I used to love hearing ours go off at like 2 AM. Granted the firemen then didn't no doubt! :) We used to live on a farm about 3 miles away from station #1 and about 5 miles from station #2 (we're a Township that stretches about 11 miles across at its longest) and I used to be able to hear that thing out in the field like I was about 2 blocks from it.
Since its volunteer, they are most likely waiting for personelle to get there. volunteer doesnt always sit at the fire house. we do.... but some dont.
@Haunted100808 just because they have radios doesnt mean they have them on or are in haering distance. i put mine on when im in the car or at night to wake me up but during the day when im home its turned off or charging.
@jfpinell most people assume we are already paid, when im tryin to get a job people say don't u work at the firehouse and im like no....i volunteer there u fuckin niggers
I really miss hearing ours! i used to love to hear it as a kid. We used to be able to hear it out in the middle of the field and we lived about 2 miles from station 1 and about 4 miles from station 2 (spread out between the whole township about 6 miles apart.) Ours was also used as a noon whistle -I guess to let all the farmers in the fields know it was lunch time. Darn! I wish they'd use that again! Now everything is done by pagers. They don't even use it at noon anymore. I miss hearing that!

Show volunteers arriving, not just same boring scene.
