maikdeleon no im not lying it takes a lot of memorization to study all the shotokan kata. i can just imagine how long itll take with the traditional karate.
Kanazawa is not really 10° dan in Karate actually. That "10° dan" was given to him by a martial arts assosiation that is not focused on karate and even less on Shotokan. When he was in the JKA, the last rank he obtained there was 7° dan. His actual rank is 9° dan in the SKIF, his federation.
In traditional Karate, the maximum rank you can have while being alive is 9° dan. The SKIF will give him the 10° dan (probably) when he dies.
@Sheik06 isn't 10th dan an honorary degree meaning the highest degree you can get? skill has little to due with it but more dedication to the art or organization.
Search scnelind and my channel of videos will come up and there are a bunch of videos of me (eric) doing this kata..... There are also kumite fights in there too.
The great master Hirokazu Kanazawa was in Costa Rica in 2004. He still strongh, I got his signature at time. so nice to see him over and over doing this kata but better in person.
the kata is to practice the moves and alot of the moves have Bunkai hidden in the kata.Bunkai are how the moves would be used in a fight so when he does a pulling motion and a kick the Bunkai might be him breaking a enemys leg
cool thanks for the info, funny thing is i've been told so many different applications for these movements, but i never really thought about multiple applications and possibilities. i've just been thinking too linear i guess. one guy told me that in the beginning your supposed to be stepping around logs and rocks on the ground lol... maybe. guess we just gotta keep an open mind =)
@flipmac540 Well said dude. Cos that's what Bruce Lee said so. Always keep an open mind in the path of martial arts. The final Mikazuki-Geri and 360 jump is something I had headache in mastering it... :-p
you see only the form but not meaning and spirit. I saw him alive, and I must say that he is full of energy and power even in his 77. Now we all try to do kata showy but not like martial training. See Nakayama`s kata - he does like Kanazawa too. Oss!
I understand what you mean detection123, but be carefull when you speak. You are wrong if you think that modern karate has "no power or energy". Nowodays people tend to believe that modern karate is not effective and all they try to do is to be "showy". If you think that, you are completely wrong. Karate has evolved, like everything in life need to evolde to adapt himself to new situations. A "martial art" is by definition "art of war". War thecniques need to change over times, nothing is static

Sensei Kanazawa's speed and intensity are all fine and dandy! But the way he advertises his rank is laughable! Anybody who knows anything about mathamatics will tell you that any number raised to the power of 0 automatically equals 1. And he advertises himself as a 10th dan to the power of 0. Therefore, this sensei is little more than a shodan doing an upper-blackbelt kata.
I do not mean any offence nor disrespect. The integer, zero, that you label as an exponent, is in fact a degree symbol. Do not worry, my statement does not invalidate your reasoning. But I hope, at least for my own future, that my expectations will be realistic enough to expect a great, respectable, experienced, sensei, to make mistakes or merely lessons, and not base my sensei's teaching abilities solely upon his ability to perform Mathematic expressions perfectly.
numbers shouldn't mean anything when someone of hirokazu kanaz\awa's status has this kind of passion for karate-it all depends on your experience and what you have learnt from it-i dont really care if he is 10th dan or not, because frankly i believe he is a master of his own works;)
haiz..karate is being leave behind in malaysia already. 100 ppl learn karate. 50 ppl quit in white belt. another 30 leave half way. n continue til the end only a few. ):
It is obvious that Kanazawa is just changing for the sake of change. the version with Soke Nakayama was far superior to this version. This rushed, and embellished just to put his stamp on it. It doesn't reflect the nuances of this kata. He was already breaking away from JKA at the time. I went one of his seminars in the mid eighties. I came away unimpressed of him as a dedicated teacher. All he wanted was a large group to make it look how large his following was.
well didnt kanazawa say, that kata should fit the form of the practictioner. And each person when they reach a certain point will have diffrent interpretations. They are all right, just slightly diffrent interpretations. kanazawa is focus on one thing in this point in his life, other practictioners are focus on others. Just look at how many diffrent interpretations are there for unsu bunkai.
He was the guy who worked with Nakayama Sensei seeking for the best form for Shotokan, after being a disciple of Nakayama and Funakoshi....If you do a kata different from this one, you're the guy doing it wrong.....
Not to mention Kancho won the Japan Karate championship in both kata and kumite with a broken arm....
Fucking morons....How do you even dare to attack this kata? The performance was perfect....Do you mention Michael Milon and Luca Valdesi, and actually THEY are the ones who don't know how to do a fucking kata....Both of them just focus on the speed in the kata....In example, Luca Valdesi always ruin his kata times in competition...Don't compare it to real karate...Those guys are pussies, Kanazawa's been training all his life, and he's the guy who, with Nakayama, gave us the rules to do Shotokan.
I can not believe some people here are trying to compare Luca Valdesi or a Michael Milon with KANCHO KANAZAWA.They are only babies in front of him.Kancho is going to be 77 years old in October 2008.He is still in amazing form for his age.Last of the very great masters.

I was honoured to train with him around the time when this was filmed and even more honoured to grade under him.
