Kanazawa is not really 10° dan in Karate actually. That "10° dan" was given to him by a martial arts assosiation that is not focused on karate and even less on Shotokan. When he was in the JKA, the last rank he obtained there was 7° dan. His actual rank is 9° dan in the SKIF, his federation.

In traditional Karate, the maximum rank you can have while being alive is 9° dan. The SKIF will give him the 10° dan (probably) when he dies.

The great master Hirokazu Kanazawa was in Costa Rica in 2004. He still strongh, I got his signature at time. so nice to see him over and over doing this kata but better in person.

the kata is to practice the moves and alot of the moves have Bunkai hidden in the kata.Bunkai are how the moves would be used in a fight so when he does a pulling motion and a kick the Bunkai might be him breaking a enemys leg

cool thanks for the info, funny thing is i've been told so many different applications for these movements, but i never really thought about multiple applications and possibilities. i've just been thinking too linear i guess. one guy told me that in the beginning your supposed to be stepping around logs and rocks on the ground lol... maybe. guess we just gotta keep an open mind =)

Nowodays people tend to believe that modern karate is not effective and all they try to do is to be "showy". If you think that, you are completely wrong. Sensei Kanazawa's speed and intensity are all fine and dandy! But the way he advertises his rank is laughable! Anybody who knows anything about mathamatics will tell you that any number raised to the power of 0 automatically equals 1. And he advertises himself as a 10th dan to the power of 0. Therefore, this sensei is little more than a shodan doing an upper-blackbelt kata.

It is obvious that Kanazawa is just changing for the sake of change. the version with Soke Nakayama was far superior to this version. This rushed, and embellished just to put his stamp on it. It doesn't reflect the nuances of this kata. He was already breaking away from JKA at the time. I went one of his seminars in the mid eighties. I came away unimpressed of him as a dedicated teacher. All he wanted was a large group to make it look how large his following was.

They are all right, just slightly diffrent interpretations. kanazawa is focus on one thing in this point in his life, other practictioners are focus on others. FYI This was filmed in the late 70's so he would have been mid 40's when he filmed it. He performed all 26 Kata twice over a 2 day period so he can perhaps be forgiven if these where not his best performances. He is still amazing as he was then. I was honoured to train with him around the time when this was filmed and even more honoured to grade under him.

I did a training session with Kanazawa in New York 32 years ago. I think that this is the same guy. He was not young then. He was amazing doing a kata then. He said he was learning tai chi and that it was very hard and he thought it would take 12 years to master.
