  • Yes, the unions have turned Detroit into an utopia. Back to reality though, they suffocated companies, especially the motor producing ones into becoming so uncompetitive that the company was no longer making money.

Amazing that people can still look at Detroit with pride and say, I was one of the strikers.

    God bless Governor Walker !

  • @groam6666 Of all the stupid comments here yours takes the cake. Did the unions decide what kind of cars the companys will build? Did the unions work aginst a national health care program? Did the unions tear down the protective trade tarrifs that created Americas Industrial base?

  • @MsZeitgeist85 Unions drive up costs in businesses, and on an international market, that becomes a problem. Unionized work places typically get above average health care, which would probably be bolstered if there was a national health care program.

Tariffs work both ways. A tariff means consumers pay a higher price for a product than you would if there was free trade. If unions drive up costs and can lower product quality, then why give them a monopoly through tariffs?

  • @groam6666 1. If we had Single Payer health care it would save buisnesses billions since they wouldn't have to pay health benifits. 2.A tarrif means people would pay a little more but higher wages would offset this. The United States was the most protectionist country in the world when manufacturing was at its height. Today China is the most protectionist country. Tarrifs are what built Americas Industry.

  • @MsZeitgeist85 Businesses might save money, then again, the taxes would have to come from someplace, either business or people. Check out the payroll tax and contributions payed by businesses and employees in countries with a single payer system.

Tariffs do not lead to higher wages. The higher the price of goods, the less people will be able to afford it. Not to mention that the countries that the U.S. imposed tariffs on also put tariffs on U.S. goods, which made us equally worse off.

  • @MsZeitgeist85 Another aspect of tariffs is demand pull inflation, in which there are less goods available to purchase (due to tariffs) so the market compensates by raising the price. Where have we seen the most rapid rise in standard of living. In the time of very high tariffs, or relatively low tariffs?

Capital is the largest contributor to increases of wages, not unions, tariffs or government interventionism. Would you not agree?

  • @groam6666 NO.. Labor is superior to Capital because labor preceds Capital. What you mentioned about inflation is a myth. X amout of money no longer = Y amount of inflaiton this was proven during the BAM Crisis of 1982.

  • @MsZeitgeist85 Tell that to African's lol. Labor is superior??? Productivity determines wages, and capital contributes more to wages than collective bargaining rights. If the opposite were the case, don't you think African's would have rapidly started unionizing?

With inflation, look at the Consumer Price Index, which is my proof why inflation is not a myth. If you want an extreme example, look at Zimbabwe, or the 70's in the U.S. Research inflation & capital yourself, don't take my word on it.

  • @groam6666 In Africa Harvey Firestone had union organizers killed at the Firestone rubber plant in Lyberia. To this day this still work for 40 censts an hour and are not allowed to organize. Before that Belgums King Leopold killed more people in the Congof than form 1884-1908 than Hitler in slave labor to boost the profits of the Anglo Indian Belguin Rubber Co.

  • @groam6666 In the last 30 years Americans have worked longer hours while wages have remaned flat or gone down.

Alot of people that criticize John Maynard Keynes by pointing to how the US recovered from the crash of 1920 quicker than the great depression don't realize that wages incresed at that time which drove up demand. The opposite of what happened in the Great Depression.

  • Right On!!!!!!!!!Teamsters! North Cali:))

  • a time that will remember, eminem

  • Stand united brothers! A class war is brewing.

  • Unions All the way! A UA Steamfitter, Next time he'll find out

  • "Where my life changed was when I realized that my company was willing to kill me in order to get their newspaper out"

  • You Tube is filtering results. They are favoring anti-union videos. Google owns youtube and during the primaries, Google ran Voice of America news stories. VOA is the official propaganda arm of the US government. Two fo the boardmembers of VOA are ultra right James Glassman and Condoleeza Rice.

  • Without a strong laborer's union your wages will eventually be as low as China's, which now is about $200 per month average industrial wages. The unions set your wage standard.

  • Land of the free, home of the brave...

  • How long did the communists maintain the stike for? Just curious.

  • Kiss my ass, sucka. Not curious.

    Bingalls

  • Never cross a picket line. Hi guys, come to the Anchor at 7 Sunday night for some solidarity and cold beer!

  • Another Guild striker who didn't think once of scabbing. I also thank you for posting this. I'm with Kate DeSmet: "My life changed when I realized that the company I worked for was willing to kill me ..." And it changed me forever.

  • A Newspaper Guild striker here. Thanks for the video. Funny how quickly the "liberal" media forgets. (bitter laughter)

  • I was one of these strikers,as well as my spouse. We went back to work there and are now retired. Prior to the strike, it was a wonderful place filled with proud and skilled people. Upon returning to work, it was like a prison that you wanted to break free from. No, we didn't cross the picket line. It never was even considered. I am proud to say, WE ARE THE UNION!!! We got the jobs back, that these corporate giants said would not happen. For that I am proud that we fought and won!

  • God bless you man and brother, from an all-union family since the 1800's. ...glad you did not back down.

  • A time in my life I will never forget. Thanks SO much for this video.

A strikers wife who stood by him.

  • Thanks for posting this. I've been trying to find footage of this for quite some time.
