No offense but DT made a "not so right" during the drummer auditions. They should have also asked Blake Richardson and Terry Bozzio to audition for them as well. Also, Blake Richardson should have been DT's new drummer. ADTOE and the rest of the music that DT will put out would be better IMO. PEace

Petrucci stated that they picked the drummer that best fit their personality and how they want to spend the rest of Dream Theaters' life with the new drummer(Mike Mangini). I don't think you can compare Kevin Moore's departure to Portnoy. I would compare Kevin Moore to an arm or a leg whereas Portnoy was the spine. I think Portnoy was correct that DT needed a break. I feel the music has been stale in the last 2 albums. Maybe this is a good thing overall for both Portnoy and DT but it remains to be seen and frankly, I'm very skeptical.

@Katwr1029 as Mike Portnoy puts his mark on a lot of things, maybe the staleness was partly due to him. I think it is for the better for both of them that he left. Mike can continue to do all kinds of crazy and terrific stuff, while DT get a chance to bring some of the old vibe back into their music.

Now let's talk about the new guy. Mike Mangini was the drummer for Extreme from '94 to '96 (when the band broke up.) He has also drummed for some of James LaBrie's solo work. From '02 to '05, Mangini set five World's Fastest Drummer records, so he's a pretty fast drummer.

Personally I'm looking forward to Dream Theater's new album and I wish their new drummer the best of luck...although no one can ever truly replace Mike Portnoy.

Extreme was like a poprock band and If You haven't mentioned I that MM was their drummer, there is not so many to know it. I haven't heard anything about Extreme drummer... MP has done so much as a drummer, producer, composer etc. that MM has nothing same. DT changed progemetal, has been so creative... MM has an opportunity to use MP:s work because he in the spotlight now

Even though MP is arguably the greatest drummer alive, he left because DT wouldn't take a breather. Understandable; it seemed that when DT wasn't touring they were recording, no real breaks in between. With MP feeling a bit overworked, eventually tension would rise and DT would end up splitting, or MP's departure would be because of a big fight, one or the other. When it all comes down to it, it was best for MP to leave the band, and, knowing all this, this was the best possible time to do it.

Maybe they could negotiate a break, something like 1 or 2 years. But, also the reality is that DT is a non-stopping machine, something wrong from my point of view, 'cause they're doing the same stuff as we can appreciate on the last record. I think they stopped improving. Let's see what happens with MM

The thing is that mike WAS dream theater...He founded the band,he was into everything,he was the band very center and its unity point...

But if you look at all bands, any good ones, evolving sounds is what takes you to the next level not only musically but socially. Dream theater are SO much more popular now than they were when Awake and I&W was being propagated.
